Square Enix has announced a new game in the Final Fantasy XIII series at the Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary Event, bringing Lightnings story to an end.
Final Fantasy XIII-2 is out! With it comes a final trailer which neatly compresses all the good bits of FFXIII-2 into one minute.
The long wait is over. We've finished our review copy and had a great time, so come read our impressions of Final Fantasy XIII-2.
There’s going to be a very special scene in Final Fantasy XIII-2. Speaking at Japan’s CEDEC conference, Square Enix mobile business senior manager Takashi Tokita spoke of the late Yoshinori Kanada. Kanada was a storyboard artist who, among other things, worked on Final Fantasy XIII. One board in particular was for a scene that didn’t make it into the game. According to Tokita, its omission was something director Motomu Toriyama regretted as he quite liked the scene. Not this time, however. The scene, in which Odin holds Lightning, will be included in the upcoming Final Fantasy XIII-2.
You can see the sequence in question at the end of the clip below, as well as the board it originated from.
Remember how last week, we found out Noel was from the future? Well he’s not the only one who gets to give time the finger. Now you can do it too! Dengeki PlayStation reveals a time-travelling mechanic in the game.
The Historiacross system works through gates in each area. By interacting with the gates, you can choose where – and more importantly, when – you want to go. The examples in the magazine show the Bresha Ruins both five years and three centuries from now. Using the system comes at a cost, though. You must use your treasure-seeking friend Mog to gather “O Parts”, which trigger the gates.
Why bother going to the future at all? Noel tells Serah that he saw Lightning there. If she wants to find her sister, the future may be the first place to look. Not to mention the fact that Noel is the last surviving human and wants to remedy that fact. And thus our heroes have embarked on a mutually beneficial quest.
Dengeki also has the first proper reveal on Lightning and her role in the game. As we already knew, she’s slumming it about in Valhalla, servicing the goddess Etro. According to the magazine, she’s not actually that far from being a god-like being herself.
Dengeki PlayStation is out in Japan tomorrow and Famitsu (on sale Thursday) is also set to have a feature on the game.

Ali Hillis has confirmed today via Facebook that she has finished recording all of her dialogue for Final Fantasy XIII-2.
As we all know, Ali Hillis voices Lightning, one of the main characters of the Final Fantasy XIII series. I can only imagine that if all of her lines are done already, the game is right on schedule for its January 2012 release date.
Thanks to forum member totlmstr for pointing this out.

Some new Final Fantasy XIII-2 information has been released in the latest issue of Jump today, including a couple of fairly small but important story points. Here they are thanks to Kagari on Neogaf:
Noel is from the future where he’s the last surviving human of his time.
Lightning is a knight for the goddess Etro who’s tasked with protecting her temple in Valhalla.

There is now a scan for the above information, showing a new render for Lightning.

Many new screenshots (a whopping 65 in total) have been released featuring a handful of the things recently highlighted in Japanese gaming magazines such as the 3 characters; Trey, Cater, and Cinque and also the Bahamut Summon. Renders of the newer character have also been included. Click “more” to see them all.
With Final Fantasy Type-0 coming out in just under two months, Square Enix has already started the advertising onslaught with three new commercials which have begun airing on Japanese TV. The characters in the adverts have been dubbed over with alternative voices, apparently saying something hilarious. I feel the humor will be lost on most of us. See all three in the video below.
Square Enix updated the official Final Fantasy XIII-2 website during the first day of PAX with a complete overhaul of the layout and a few new details on the story. As Serah’s fiance in the first game, many people have questioned why Snow hasn’t made an appearance, or even been mentioned in any trailers or news. The updated Story section reveals all:
Three years after the events in FINAL FANTASY XIII, Lightning has gone missing, and Snow is nowhere to be found. In a rebuilding world, Serah notices that something is amiss. After a fortuitous encounter with a mysterious man named Noel, the two set off to find Lightning.
Hopefully more will be revealed during the coming days.

Looks like Japan and importers are going to have to wait a bit longer than planned for Final Fantasy Type-0. The game’s original October 13 release date has been written off in favour of October 27. The single for the game’s theme song has also been pushed back to October 19 (originally October 5) and the soundtrack itself is now being released on October 26 (originally October 12).
The delay is due to Square Enix wishing to polish the game further. At the release of Type-0′s Natsubi demo, director Hajime Tabata specified ongoing tweaks for the game’s camera and Phantoma system.
Given the fact that the game was announced alongside Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII back at E3 2006, another two weeks is pretty much a drop in the ocean.

Well here’s a surprise for everyone. IGN has seemingly fumbled and released a brand new Final Fantasy XIII-2 trailer early. The “Quest for Lightning” trailer appeared on IGN earlier this evening but was quickly removed. Evidently, it wasn’t removed quick enough as it’s been uploaded by various Youtube users. The trailer was apparently due for release on the first day of PAX, which is beginning tomorrow, but IGN have accidentally broken the embargo.
The surprise trailer features a huge amount of new footage that certainly is refreshing. A new character may even be featured but it’s best to see for yourself.
To go with the Type-0 screenshots, Famitsu has released a bundle of Final Fantasy XIII-2 screenshots, featuring 5 we haven’t seen before. Although there isn’t much new information we can extract from these shots, two of them do feature Yaschas Massif but during nighttime, showing the day and night cycle featured in the game.
