Default What's up with these pronunciations in voiced FF games?

Dissidia - FFVIII Ultimecia is pron.(nounced) Ulti-MEESHA instead of Ulti-mee-see-ah. Seriously...Ulti-MEESHA? WTF, is she ghetto now?

FFX Tidus is pron. TEE-DUS instead of Tydus, which is lame because most FF gamers will continue to refer to him as Tydus.

FFIX Zidane is pron. ZI-DAWN instead of Zid'dane. Seriously, no American would pronounce it as ZI-DAWN. We know him as Zid'dane. Although in fairness, isn't his name like Ji-tan or something in Japanese?

FFIV Yang is pron. YOUNG instead of Yang like Wang. Why the hell not just name him Young then, if you wanted him to be called Young? Young is a valid oriental name.

FFVII Tseng is pron. SUNG instead of Teh'Seng. WTF? His name is TEH'SENG, goddamit.

How the hell do you pronounce Shanttoto then? I pronounce it SHAN-TO-TO, although some fool is going to come up in here and tell me it's CHAN tou tou or some shit.

Just used more.

I remember me and my friends being like WTF when we watched an interview after completing the game and they kept saying Tee-dus.

Ti should make a Ty sound, not a Tee sound.

Tseng is pronounced like Sung because it's like a Chinese name, and Tidus has always been Tee-dus.

I think Ultimecia could've gone either way, but I do agree with you on Zidane.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tidus

Apparently ティーダ is pronounced Tida, so Tee-dus should be more correct.

*wait for someone to bash me saying Ty-dus is the correct version*

Yang and Tseng are asian names, so it's correct that they pronounce them "Young" and "Sung."

The correct pronunciation of Zidane IS Zidahn. Teedus makes sense when you think of his Japanese name, which leans more towards the "tee" sound as opposed to the "tai" sound. Ultimeesha is the way I've always pronounced it. I think I recall someone mentioning before that you wouldn't say "Alicia" "A-lee-see-a" and that does make sense.

I'm unhappy with the pronunciation of Zidane and Tidus but they make sense. :/

Think Zinedine Zidane (footballer), it's a REAL name, and Zidahn is the right way to pronounce it. Tidus has always been Teedus, though most people say Tydus because it doesn't sound as stupid.

Tseng and Yang were pretty obvious, please don't tell me you seriously thought it was TEH-seng. Honestly, TEH?

I do agree that Ultimeesha sounds awful, I think I'll stick with Ultimeseeah.

I've always said "tee-dus", but that again is the way you would pronounce his name in Norwegian. But the English pronounciation has always been "tai-dus" in my head. And it's always been "ultimee-see-ah" for me...

It's because most of the names are Latin and Greek. And it's only in english the letters "e" and "i" are pronounced the way they are (as far as I know) So in German, Franch, Spannish, and Japanese to pick a few all those names (with the exception of Tseng and Yang) are pronounced stright forward, so to me non of the pronunciations were surprising.

And just the hammer a little on Americans and people who live in a land under The Queen;
Your language isn't the only one dumbasses, and when you're playing a game from another country, there's a good chance the pronunciation is different from what your narrow minded head think.

Peace out ^^

I pronounced Tidus as "Tydus" due to the fact that like many other leading role final fantasy names, I thought his name pertained to an element of weather. In his case: Tide, pronounced "Tyde" not "Teede".
