Its got far better gameplay than any previous game in the series, provides excellent challenge & the quest is long & interesting. It also has terrific music. The story is cliched (though that could be said about any game in the series) but very charming.
People point to IV as being Square's first masterpiece but its very early & unrefined compared their later games, especially VI. The story is decent but aside from a few great characters (Kain) & great art it's nothing special. Fairly ridiculous at points actually. There are some great bosses though.
Everything that Square later became famous for--story driven RPG with cutting edge presentation--first appears, and coheres, in IV....but still I'm not especially fond of it. I'd rather play III tbh. FFV is money though, best customization system in the series.

Also Butz.
I love you. I completly agree.
In my opinion ff5 has the best gameplay in the series mostly because the job system and the chalenge level. I never played a game with such a hard/easy balance. FF4´s gameplay is ood because when you want to cast a magic you have to spend mp and wait for the casting time, it was crap. They remove this from the followings ffs ( expet x-2).
Graphics and music are superior in ff5. I enjoyed ff5´s storyline more than 4´s but i understand if someone says that 4´s is better. 5´s stroryline was a perfect and well-made cliche. I really liked it.
V's story was boring to me. The battle system was great, a good improvement from III but the job progression was way too slow for my taste. I think the way they handled the job system was much better balanced in X-2. If only it didn't rely on these stupid Dress-spheres...
So for me, it's IV. In fact, there's no question there.
IV. It's one of those stories other FF's can't beat because of the attention to the characters. That's to me though.

I played Vagrant Story and enjoyed FF Tactics. That is why I love FFXII.

V has far and away the better battle system, but that's about it. Story: dull. Characters: pathetic. Character development: Either non-existent or instantaneous ("I don't like you. Wait..... okay now I do."). IV has the advantage in those areas. After that it comes down to a matter of what is more important to you. Personally I enjoyed both, but for different reasons.
Why did Cecil have to become a paladin though? WHYYYYYYYYYYYY?
Final Fantasy IV is better in every area other than the battle system. I still enjoyed FFV more. The problem with FFIV is that you had to level grind many times and it took away the fun factor. I agree the story in FFV wasn't as good as in FFIV, but I didn't have to grind every few minutes in FFV.
FFIv had an insanely annoying last dungeon. And that's what spoils the game, becuase other than that it was very good.
FFV's only redeeming factor was the battle system. Everything else was boring as hell. The stories, the characters, the plot, everything was so dull I almost felt myself going to sleep.
FFIV had the superior story, therefore I like it better. (Except Rosa. I despised her.)

when you put up ff5 vs ff4 i gotta go with 4 when i played it i was kept interested, the leveling was great, there were some hang-ups like tellah, cid, edward, fosuya(fusoya, whatever the fuck his name is) but i sure as hell enjoyed more than ff5 which took forever in a damn day to get 1 job mastered for 1

Ain't played FFIV yet but I do wanna say that I actually really liked the FFV cast. Sure, they're pretty one-note and don't particularly grow during the course of the game but then again V is all about the poking fun at itself. As someone once said, "It is a game that recognizes itself as a mode of entertainment, and refuses to take itself too seriously."
With that out, I'll add that I found the bunch to be fun, cute and charming.
I just played III and IV for the first time through the ds remakes. I've slept for 1hr combined over the past two nights because of IV. I liked it. I hope that V gets the 3D touch.
