As I understand, the Crystal mythology is what links the Fabula Nova Crysallis trilogy together. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I read an article at ign.com. The article did briefly cover this theory. I know there has been some controversy on this subject so I want to clear things up.
My main question is what exactly is a Crystal. I know that in Final Fantasy Versus XIII, the main character [Name hinted to be something like "Storm"] is from a royal bloodline destined to protect what they call the "last" or "final" Crystal. And later in the trailer we see two brief close-ups of what a Crystal energy cell looks like. At least that's what I hear from rumors.
Now I also read somewhere that Crystals have the ability to basically shape-shift or something along those lines. Is that true or was the information I read incorrect?
And now I'm finally getting to my point after all that explaining. I have also read in different places in the forums that Crystals have magical abilities. Example: In the Final Fantasy Versus XIII trailer when "Storm" grabs the sword with the engine on it, the sword sends red sparks into the air. So does that mean that Crystals are like materia? Or are Crystals the same substance as in Crystal Chronicles?
Crystals always have magical abilities. Materia is nothing but a crystal, magicite is nothing but a crystal, job classes in FFV were stored in crystals. So yes, crystals have unnatural powers.
If you want a better explanation of crystals it would be best to read up on FFXI. The sum of it is, the world was formed by the split of the crystal, and everything is made up of the crystals, if you reform the crystal everything including the gods will cease to exist and that is what the Celestial Avatars want.
Aparently the Royale Bloodline has possesion, well a better word power over the crystal, being able to use its abilities in battle in order to protect itself and the user in question (i.e. Storm, blue haired guy... whatever you want to call him... i shall call him Julian)
This is probably wrong since my friends talk mush.
Yes Mush.
But it came up on a conversation when i started blerting about games etc...
in versus, the crystal is stored in the pillar behind mush/julian/storm. in XIII, the crystal is logically placed somewhere in the city, and in agito, it's probably somewhere at the academy, or a bazillion floors below it.

This topic is about what is a crystal or crystals in the XIII games? Because I read it as the topic creator understands crystals in XIII but just wants to know there affect and importance in the FF timeline. Is that right?

Yeah this is about what a Crystal/Crystals in the XIII games are. I do understand most of the basic elements of the Crystal but I just wanted to clear some things up. But now that you bring it up I would like to know the affect and importance Crystals have in the FF timeline. I think I get the main picture but if there's more please tell me.

Hm...must have missed that when I first saw the trailer. But now that you mention it I can see those Crystals in the backround. Thanks. I had read somewhere that Crystals were given to the people who reside in Pulse, which is supposed to be underneath "Cocoon". Those Crystals gave the people special abilites or something similar to that. I'm not entirely sure.

Yeah I had also read [I seem to read most of my information don't I?] that the Royal Bloodline in Versus XIII has/had possession of the Crystal[s?]. And that Storm [I'll call him that.] was supposed to protect them from maurauders. So you're saying Crystals are alive basically?

Nothing more really. Crystals are just infused with the elements of the game world. If crystals shatter or their light dim the world is disrupted and you can see the affects in the surrounding evniorment. example: the water crystal breaks in FFV so the nation that housed it no longer has pure water.
Crystals can also be compared to other relics because people that own the crystal gain the power of the planet in a way. FFIV was an example of that.
XIII is giving the crystal a personality, which was also in FFIII. The crystal out of concern for itself and the planet as a whole chooses soldiers to fight against its enemies.
in Sum: crystals are a part of the world and the lifeforce of the world. They hold power superior then someone without its aid. Jobs, magic, etc all come from the choices of the crystal.

I haven't played FFIII, IV, or V yet so I really wouldn't know. But basically you're saying Crystals are a part of the planet similar to FFVII, X, X-2, ect?

What you said is what I heard too. Testuya Nomura also said, though, that you could see briefly what the crystal was like because it was right behind the chair in the throne room. If you look closely you can see that something is back there.
the thing that was back here was basically the pillar.........in it the contents of the crystal-if that was what you meant
Yeah that was what I meant. I just remember reading an interview of Tesuya Nomura's and he said you could briefly see what was guarding the crystal, which was behind the chair in the throne room.
Me too, what color is it? I need to watch that trailer again... *goes to watch it the 10th time*
well since i figure the main character derives some of his magical powers possibly from the crystals....the blue spectres given of when he is in battle could represent the crystals colour
