All he's doing is promoting sexual morality as a better means to prevent AIDS than condoms. He is right. Abstinence is a better way to prevent against disease than a condom. Most people don't do this though, but that doesn't mean the Pope needs to endorse that lifestyle. The church has always been against pre-marital sex and birth control.
He isn't even saying condoms should be illegal, just that they provide a false sense of security against the disease and aren't as effective as people might think. They're not the be all end all of STD control.
He isn't saying that "friendship will cure AIDS" or other nonsense.
It angers me to see that virtually every news article on the pope is completely biased as well. I guess that makes more interesting news stories. Bah.

Adding to that, I don't think the Pope even knows how bad African countries' rape epidemic is. Yes it's an epidemic.
Condoms WILL help with contracting HIV. Yes it will. It will it will it will. I know what I'm talking about. Sexual education is a passion of mine. Yes I know they have a failure rate, but it is relatively LOW. Condoms will fail if you DO IT WRONG or if you swap blood or splooge in someone's wound.
Anyway condoms are only for CONSENTING couples. What about the ones that aren't? Little girls are raped repeatedly in these African countries, and I'm sure boys are too as well. No amount of religion will stop these fuckheaded HIV infested rapists from doing these heinous acts. A bullet to the fucking skull will, but that's besides the point.
Putting the rape aside, the condoms will help decrease the amount of children born with HIV, and decrease the amount of women getting HIV because the men were cheating whores and slept around with many women and giving them HIV, thus perpetuating the vicious cycle.

I don't like this pope. He looks a bit evil IMO. Anyways, on to the subject at hand, condoms do contain help contain HIV/AIDS but they are not the solution. A nice solution rather then stop having sex is to have sex with only a few people. Now AIDS/HIV spread other ways as well; like using needles, swapping blood, etc. but the main cause of AIDS/HIV is having unprotected sex.
Also the common belief was that Gay Men where the cause of the wide spread of AIDS/HIV, which isn't true. They know the risks/dangers of having unprotected sex can bring, so they wear condoms and HIV/AIDS isn't as bad in the Gay Community as many people think.
Anyways, to get to the point condoms do help AIDS/HIV from not spreading to others, though do remember condoms can break
