Dare I start a Final Fantasy VII thread talking about exclusivity? I'm not quite sure what relationship (if any) Sony and Square have now but it was obviously better in the past. I know Sony was pleased that FF moved to Playstation and even published FFVII but I was just wondering, what does that mean now? All of compilation titles (bar Before Crisis) have been on some sort of Sony medium. Does Sony actually own the rights to Final Fantasy VII as publishers like Microsoft with Halo?
I'm only asking this because I never really thought about it. I hate remake talk and think people should just be patient but would they be limited to putting it onto a Sony platform because of this?
Yes but it wasn't a rival platform. That is a good point though. Eidos published that and I believe EA published X-2 over here. You could hardly say EA had the rights to X-2. Maybe Square don't treat publishers in the same way as most companies.
Most probably not. I never imagined I would see FF 1-6/Chrono Trigger re-released on PS1.
I thought Banjo Kazooie 64 would be released on VC but it showed up on XBLA.
Just look at Ivalice Alliance:
FF XII - Sony
FF T (FF T WotL) - Sony
Vagrant Story - Sony
FF TA - Nintendo
FF TA2 - Nintendo
FF XII RW - Nintendo
And there are other examples. I cna't say I have facts. It's all assumption, but if SE wanted they could put a FF VII remake on XBOX360 if they saw it fit.
Long story short - I don't think Sony has anything to say in this matter. What they can do however is pay SE enough money to keep it exclusive.

I believe Banjo Kazooie is a different situation. Rare was bought by Microsoft and I think all of their intellectual properties with it. Also Final Fantasy XII published by Square themselves, not Sony.
I tried looking into it so far all signs point to Square Enix owning the rights to the game. I would think that maybe since FFvii:AC was made by Sony pictures that perhaps it would remain with Sony, due to some relationship dealing with FF vii. Personally i think that the only reason that SE would put it on any other system would be purely due to money and since IGN has reported the Sony is getting rid of 8000 jobs we will just have to see what happens.

I will shut up too after this. I pulled out the old VII case and the rights are SE unless someone bought it since 1997. Hopefull it will stay true to Sony but we will see what will become of it .
Final Fantasy VI Advance was published by Nintendo. PS1 FF VI was published by Sony I tihnk? Original Final Fantasy VI was published by Square.
I just think anything can happen with a FF VII remake.
Yeah... I'll stfu, because I don't know what the hell I'm trying to say anymore.
The think about FFVI is that the Playstation version came out after Square and Nintendo lost their relationship. I think an FFVII remake will be on the PS3 only. It doesn't seem like Square to make FFVII on the Xbox 360.
