So the game was released almost a week ago. Has anyone bought/downloaded it yet?
I got it about 2 days after it was released and I'm enjoying it very much. The story thus far seems well thought out and the characters are nice too (though Bartz is a retarded name). Seeing as this is my first playthrough of FFV, I'm pretty excited on playing it.
I just started playing FFV Advance the other day and it is genuinely great - vastly superior to the PS1 version. The GBA game has no annoying loading breaks going into battles or in and out of the menus (like on PS1) and it has a completely rewritten and hugely improved translation.
Unlike the PS1 version, the characters on GBA have actual personalities, and the dialogue is just more natural sounding and is full of humour, character and spark.
I recommend anyone wanting to play FFV to get the GBA version as it is by far the best one available and makes a complete mockery of the previous PS1 translation.

No they have that character and spark on the PS1 version too.

Have you actually played the GBA version? The difference in the quality of writing is immediately noticeable and is far superior. On PS1 the characters are more cliched and poorly realised, particularly Faris with her terrible "Ooh ar me hearties" pirate schtick and the script reads like a bad translation (which is what it is).
The characters in the GBA game have vastly better dialogue and feel much more nuanced and developed - they feel more like believable characters and it really helps you to enjoy the game more.
yeah I know about the vastly improved translations. You said the characters didn't have character though. They did even if cliche to the point of nice animal loving princess, tomboy pirate, and daddy's (well granddaddy) little girl. Awkwardly all royalty.
The point is that on PS1 they come across as being charicatures or cookie-cutter archetypes (tomboy pirate, princess etc, like you said) and not well-realised people whereas on GBA they feel much more alive and have more clearly defined and rounded personalities.
Another advantage of the GBA version is that you get a few new job classes and some extra dungeons and stuff that become available after you finish the game (although I'm still playing through it at the moment so I don't know if the new additions are actually worthwhile or not).
