Chief visual and technical officer Glenn Entis mentions how important motion graphics are in a game for the player to feel a realistic game. In his eyes, a game character can have many polygons to be detailed and photorealistic, but without good animations, they will feel dead and inhuman. He then takes the next generation of Final Fantasy as an example for this.
In Final Fantasy, the modelling fidelity was really better than the motion fidelity. In other words, when you looked at the models, they signalled an expectation to the audience that the motion couldn't deliver upon.
Now, we can all hate him and EA games for this, but if you recheck the trailer we have frame by frame, you can see that he’s right. Our heroine has a very sharp and frozen face, almost unaffected by her actions and surroundings. There are scenes where she will look directly at her target and show anger, but in some short fast scenes, she has an unfocused and weird look on her face.
On Playstation 2, during the cut-scenes, characters have a much higher polygon rate on their faces to express motions in a better way. Are we satisfied with that on the next generation of Final Fantasy? As we know, the white engine is still in its first round of development. Will we see more expressions not only in cut-scenes, but also in battle, when they walk or when they stand point blank on the ground? Admit it, most characters on PS2 don’t care about their environment and look straight into some fascinating dot in the air. We want more this time!
Why do EA have to be mean to other game companies they're bullies! and they published X-2!
I can understand what they mean to a point though. Those faces do look pretty vacant and stiff. She should look a little more determined when wiping those guys off their feet. However you know when you take a picture of someone and they're pulling a completly weird face, it could just be a case of that. The trailer must have been rushed because they havent even finished the White Engine yet so I dont think EA should be soo quick to pass judgement without seeing the final product
EA defend themself with the Tiger Woods face. Yeeee, it looks real, but it consumes all of the PS3s power!!

And it f***ing hurts
Naturally coming to Square's defence I have a theory. In the times in the trailer when you can concentrate on her face she has emotion. But in times of quick movements she doesn't. And the reason is just that. In order to see that akward face you need to run it on slow, frame advance, or pause. I don't think they bothered with the animation just because it was a fast part for a trailer. They might not have seen the need. You probably would have never have noticed on your own (I have tried).
There were more mistakes in the trailer than just her face - spelling error, transparent objects...I'm sure her face will be fixed - SE usually has a way with small details. But overall I don't see the point - in a fast paced fight like that there is more to see than her face and when she has Cloud's personalty, too much emotion is out of the question.
geez, take ANY movie and freeze it during a conversation. esapescially vovels come's out wierd sometimes and even more if they blink. the thing is, it goes by so fast you don't see it as it lasts only for a split second. still, it is barely at alpha level, and we shouldn't expect this game before christmas 2007/early 2008 with this pace, if not even later. still, the graphics is awesome, one of the best for PS3 and just as the little current flaws on the PS3 itself, this will be corrected at by launch...obviously
