So I started playing FFVII and I dont want to miss out on any specials or secret stuff that I could miss out when playing, and I dont want to use a walkthrough.
So could you guys please list out stuff Ill need to choose/do/know?
Uh, remember, when getting the Great Gospel limit break for Aeris... you can take the buggy on the cargo ship after getting the Mythril from a cave... That probably made no sense whatsoever....

If this is your first time playing - know that you are in for one of the most beautiful story's ever told. Ignore the dated graphics, this game is the pinnacle of Square's tenure.
Get Yuffie (forests) - Get Vincent (Shinra Mansion) - Make your characters rock hard and take down the Emerald and Ruby weapons.
I would tell you to breed Chocobo's, but to be honest, without a guide there isn't much point!
The best way is to play it through once just levelling and exploring - then when you play it again (because you will, it is inevitable) use a guide and be flabbergasted at what you missed!
Don't give Cloud any magic apart from HP+, it ruins his potential stats.
If you insist on him using materia only give him heal/revive magic.
I gave Cloud HP+, Enemy Skill(2 skills), Cover, Poison - All, Fire and prolly 2 other materias(not magic).
Should I give up on fire and poison, maybe just poison?
And should I make Aeris a black mage and a white mage?

You could let him keep Enemy skill and cover if the magic bearer in your team is low on defense. Take away fire and poison though and give it to your magic bearer.
Not sure if you know the outcome of Aeris but lets say its best to not train her to a high level XD.
I personally had it
Cloud -About 5 HP+ (Depending on where in the game I was) and if a tough fight was coming I'd give him a little White Magic.
Tifa - Support Magic and a little white magic
Red XIII - Full Black and Full White Magic.
HoweverI played the game through countless times while using various characters but everytime Cloud performed better without any Materia apart from HP+.

maybe nagase but i like to let my player all have some magic but yes it lowers clouds HP so HP+ is essential, geuss i dont think about the outcome of the magic i used but i was ok as my player level was high on the boss battles.
Fair enough. On the tougher battles I gave him white magic but nothing more than that. It lowers his attack and defense as well if I remember rightly. It doesn't look like much in the numbers but it defiently shows bad effects in battle.
Couple of points - there are a million ways you can spread everything out throughout your characters, and because of the relative ease upon which you can beat the game if you spend a little time levelling up, distribute how you see fit.
For the record here is my opinion, but mix and match to your hearts content mate.
Aeris - Cure + All and any other white magic. Also give her spells and summons. She handles both better that every other character.
RedXIII - Balanced magic and attack, I gave him plenty of offensive magic - Fire - Poison - Bolt -
Cloud - I like having the option with cloud to throw down some lightning and ice when I fancy it, so bolt and ice.
The rest is up to you buddy. Trust me, the less you know, the better your personal experience will be. I'm not sure how much you already know about the game, but as hard as it is, try to play it through without reading about how the story progresses in advance of playing from forums or wiki or guides.
Just wait till you start experimenting with cool materia combinations. When I realised the crazy combinations you can make with mime, counter, final attack, quadra magic and the like - it was awesome.
I don't see the point of using Ice/Bolt with cloud as his normal attack does more and using Aerith to much turns out to be a waste of time altogether.
Later on in the game elemental magic becomes nearly pointless altogether so you want Melle fighters like Cloud to take advantage of their traits and leave magic to their stronger bearers :/
Cloud has no need for black magic whatsoever unlike Cait Sith/Aerith.
That's not to say your wrong it's just saying that how the gmae played out for me everytime.
Hey, I know Cloud is a better melee fighter, however, early in the game, it is definitely better to give some offensive materia to everyone - physical attacks pale in comparison during the first few hours.
