Default Digital?

In the translations of the recent Famitsu scans, they say that summons appear in a "digital form". I started thinking, "what the hell does that mean?" and then I thought maybe magic isn't actually involved in this game?

Looking at the brief amount of footage we've seen of the battle system, there isn't an MP meter, only an ATB meter. Does this mean they use their technology instead of magic to do a fire attacks for example?

What do you guys think?

Famitsuu seems to think summoning is item-based~

I think there must be some form of magic, or else why would Lightning be so special? If it was purely technology, then I'd think that other people would have her stuff too, unless the Crystal gave it only to her. @_@ Besides, what kind of Fantasy is Final Fantasy without fantasy elements? XD

Xenosaga used nano-machines for the "magic" quite a lot.

Give me a moment before I come up with other examples.

I'm sorry but as soon as I read that, all I can think of is that theme tune. Anywho I remember from an interview ages ago they mentioned that technology and magic got so advanced they fused or something.

My theory is that both the Pulse and the Coccoon crystal make summons, but Coccoons are slightly machine-based (like Shiva) whereas Pulse's are more natural, like how Carbuncle appears.

Lol, anyway.

YouTube - Digimon Season 1 theme song

Lol, anyway.
First the movie version of that song was awesome.

Carbuncle looks like a freaking jester! They aren't natural. Demons are what they are.

You know how that Carbuncle summon came out of a disk. Think of that for a second. Aren't disks, digital?
and yeah, there probably won't be any MP involved, everything that Lightning performed was executed using the ATB bar.

Laserdisk was a CD the size of an LP and it was analog!

If they'redigital, somebody must have made them, designed them, modelled them, programmed them, given them textures yadda-yadda-yadda, much like real life, actually. But in the games story, who made them? Nobematsu Uebuo?

Hahaha, I forgot about the disc. Still, maybe my theory about the Pulse Summons/Not Motorbike thing still works?

I'm willing to bet that a Crystal made them.

Maybe the summons are sort of "digital" projections....kind of hollograms. Ever seen Star Trek Next Generation or Voyager? The projections on the "Hollodeck" could actually touch you (and kill you if the safety was turned off).

I thought that when they spoke of how the summon avatars would be in "digital form," they were simply referring to the notion that they could be shifted into various shapes/forms and manipulated while maintaining their essence (so to speak) - like Shiva in that motorcycle-looking form (or whatever that was) in one of the Famitsu scans we saw.

That's just what I took away from that statement, but I'm absolutely awful with speculation so don't mind me.

13 is supposedly set in the distant future - far more distant than any before, correct? Well, it would be something quite logical to think that the scientific or whatever community of this time period has "captured" what was once known as magic in a digital form. I like the idea, personally, even if it sounds aboriginal. The magic system in 8 was about as non-majickal as one couls muster without it just being totally ridiculous. If the society of 13 harbors the powers of magic digitally, it would mean a greatly simplified society, but overall it would seem unnatural. Which, to me, seems proper by this point for FF.

Utilizing data instead of the supernatural forces to conjure powerful forces that humans could not possibly posess otherwise - it's actually something that sounds plausible. Albeit in the VERY distant future. It fits the setting of 13 perfectly.

That.

Yeah, I like what he said. That would give it a more...realistic feel. If nothing else, it certainly would set it apart from 95% of most JRPGs we've seen in the past.

I think having summons in a digital form is a neat and very cool idea. I really want to see how they work in the game. Knowing SE, though, it will take forever before we see these summons in action on the battlefield. I'm sure the wait will be worth it, though.

They could also jack into robot girls boobies and clean out the excess data in their mindspace ala Ar Tonelico.

I think some of you may be getting too excited over this.

IMO, they will be machine versions of XII's summons. They might help you move faster or something, but could possibly remove your party (if you have one), and just make them a waste of time.

Just my opinion though. I mean, summons are supposed to be powerful, and in XII, they were shit. Hopefully they do get it right for XIII.
