Here's something I've been thinking about recently that I'd like to share with you all. Its a scenario that's been brewing in my little head about the future.
Ok, imagine this; its 30 years from now, America has completly become the neoliberal corpocratic dystopia most of the rest of the world had feared and is instigating constant war after war in order for profit. A small minority within the US and other states elites makes a crapload of money from thier 'disaster capitalism' and most of the world, within and outside the US is in tatters. The elite are safe in thier gated communities.
Now the world is on the brink of self-destruction and you (you being a rouge state/rebel faction/etc) have access to nuclear missiles. All intelligence points to if you nuke Chicago, New York and Washington, you'll destroy thier power base and shock the world into some sort of change. But you'll kill 30 million people rather then 6.9 Billion dieing in pointless wars to fill the coffers of the small minority. Is it worth it?
I guess this is mainly a question of morality but remember, America itself believed this to be the right choice when they decided to nuke Japan.
I agree with what America did but I don't find it right that they did it on such a place where innocent were. They should have launched it at one of Japans hardest military points instead.

That's a bit far fetched even for the imagination, it's like mixing equilibrium with terminator 3.
America has and always will be the strongest army in the world and EVERYONE fears them.

To arm even the smallest of nukes you need 2 key codes, 2 keys, a 2 keycards and genereally, if it's land based, you would need the go ahead from an unkown amount of secretarys and the president himself (before and during launch process). Now if your looking to kill 30 million people in one strike, then it's gonna need to be either ICBM, for instance, the banned Peace-Keeper missiles, or atleast a 100+ kilotonne nuclear weapon, neither of which can be carried in a flatbed truck especially into the middle of a group of people. A rouge state doesn't have access to ANY of those XD. It's not like the mayor or govenor can order a nuclear strike. Anyway, anyone who rebels against the goverment when it comes to nuclear weapons should be lined up, and shot in the firing squad. I don't trust the goverment with nukes but i trust them more than id trust a rogue unit/state.
It's supposed to a hypothetical situation Nagase. Even though it's really unlikely (*cough*N.Korea*cough*China*cough*Pakistan*) if it were to happen and you had the big red button in front of you, what would you do? Kill 30 million with the possible chance of saving over 6 billion or do nothing and let 6 billion people die over a long time.
Personally I would, if it had the chance to save the world's population 30 million war mongering, propaganda warped civilians is a small price to pay.

Now most of you would probably kill 30 million people, to save 6.9 billion people, but who says that all those 6 billion would die? XD
I think if you were answer that question right, first off, the question would be "Would you kill 30 million people, one of those being YOURSELVES". Then i think people would answer realistically, however I doubt id believe half of them because half of them are to scared to walk out their front doors let alone kill themselves.
Oh and there should be a slightly more realistic situation even when its hypothetical XD
I guess this is mainly a question of morality but remember, America itself believed this to be the right choice when they decided to nuke Japan.
I'm not up for hypotheticals, but Nagase is right that America was no small rebel faction. They had other alternatives and (quite likely in my opinion) other sources of motivation for their actions~
Seriously though, even hypothetically its got about as much realism behind it as this. Great film though.
Anyway, if we went into a nuclear war, do you really think there would be enough time for a rebel faction to do shit? And if they launched first, then they would have just killed 6.9 billion people anyway.
It is a pretty out there idea, but remember a lot of people consider Bush an idiot, failing to realise that his ineptitude ultimatly makes him and his cohorts money for thier private companies (that they were supposed to sell off but anyway). So essentially war = profit. Its like in MGS4, when war becomes so profitable for private companies, you're going to see a lot more of it.
Im not too tuned up on the particulars but just read The Shock Doctrine if you want to see where I'm coming from, one of the last chapters entitled 'A world of Green Zones and Red Zones' got me to thinking about all this.
Prehaps a Confederation of European States in the future or maybe China or India may have to make a descision like this to save the world one day?
Nuclear weapons are NOT going to save anyone if we use it on each other.
If the rogue unit or whoever blew up a thermo-nuclear weapon anywhere on the world, they would have effectively killed the 6.9 billion they were going to save.
Don't use nuclear weapons = non nuclear war = Many dead
Using Nuclear Weapons = Instant retaliation from other countries and the probal death of millions if not billions.
