Default Mr Canoe

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.../ncanoe309.xml

Long story short, 5 years ago this guy disappeared out to sea, and they only found his wrecked canoe on the shore. His wife starts demanding more and more life insurance, which is given in only small amounts because they never found his body. Couple of years later (2 weeks ago), Mr Canoe appears and is reunited with his surprisingly richer wife. Police then arrest her when she admits that she had hid her husband in her house for 5 years.

Thoughts?

I read this on the Daily Mail news site.
It's preety pathetic, this guy basically faked his death in order to get out of debt, only so himself and his wife can claim life insurance to pay off their debts.
And worse yet, her two sons where oblivious to the fact their father was alive, so she lied to her own sons in order to free herself and her partner from these aparently large debts.

'Oh God!' Canoe wife's terror as she faces ten years in prison on perjury charges

Hope she has fun

10 years is what the article is stating. I would say good behavior plus age and she will be out in 5.

While you have to admit she did well for 5 years. They got caught though which is the main thing.

Plus they'll be repo-depo'd, leaving them in the same debt they started with, if not worse.

I feel sorry for their sons more than any one else actually, if my mum insisted that my dad had been dead for five years but then confessed to hiding him from the world to get life insurance payments I know I'd be pretty upset and angry, to say the least.

When i heard this story I was like 'FUCKING ZOMG, that's hilarious!'

btw: Why on earth have people called him 'Mr. Canoe'. Surely the Canoe is the least interesting aspect of this story?

How ironic these idiots share the same name as the guy who thought we came from apes.

Apparantly he had a history of coming up with schemes designed to try and get more money, even insisting that while he was 'dead' his wife keep moving the money from bank to bank to try and get a few more dollars with different interest rates. I think the stupidest thing he did was go to a popular tourist area in Panama and let someone take his photo. WHILE HE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD!

And then he lived next door to his wife! How wasn't he caught sooner? He wasn't even caught, he turned himself in!

Why on earth is this in Serious discussions anyway? Sound like comedy news to me.
