Well, I would think they wouldn't do that, because some problems would arise. Mostly being that after a lifetime of playing, most Sony consoles die. DREs, to name a specific example.
If you're still under warranty and they send you a new PS3, I'd hope that Sony's smart enough to store all that information on a chip inside the PS3. And, if you're not under warranty...you're boned.
So, when you get a new PS3 (no doubt there'll be a PSthree) you just transfer that chip right over. I would think that the chip had to be internal...perhaps connecting them somehow would do it.
