Default The first Worthy successor to VII

In my opinion Final Fantasy XIII could be the first worthy successor to Final Fantasy VII. VII was my favorite out of the series, and it seems like there hasn't ben a Final Fantasy since that has matched its greatness.

VIII was fine, but in was caught in the wake of VII's success. IX was a little better than VIII but it didn't have the same feel when you played it.

X almost did it, but I couldn't find myself loving the characters that I loved in VII. XI doesn't really count, and XII was just too diffrent for me.

So now I think that XIII can finally go beyond Final Fantasy VII. I see a lot of similarities between VII and XIII. They both seem to have a "cyberpunk" feeling to the story. With huge empires, and the people who stand against them. They both have a dark feeling over them, especially Versus XIII and VII.

Now the biggest similarity I saw was when Nomura said that Square was trying to make Advent Children's huge battles and see how they could be incoperated into a game. Thus XIII should be a close interpretation of Advent Children. Another similarity is the fact that both games are going to have multiple spinoff's and sequels made.

So tell me what you think.

It could be. I mean its welling up to look like it. Revolutionary graphics, fancy combat system. All they need is an epic story and it could be. I agree with the dark feeling and huge empires thing. When you found out Cloud was a total psycho clone thing, it made it really psycho-processing.

I just want another FF thats as good as 7. Is that so hard to ask? FF12 sucked balls, so the only place to go is up right?

The problem with this thread is if you think that highly of VII then no there will not be another ex: people still like FFIV. I, myself, see Tactics as the best and shits all over the childish excuse of a world-saving-adventure that Cloud and Co. did even if FFVII is still good in my opinion. Another sad thing about this thread is the disregard of XI. So you can't pay a monthly fee or you can't invest the time to level up to 75 (60 at the least) to experience everything it has to offer in culture, story, and interesting game mechanics. So because of your faults and busy schedule it counts as though it doesn't exist. I know the game doesn't hand you everything on a platter, hold your hand throughout the game, and other players can make or break progression but those are the pros and cons of Online play.

XII probably got praised for having such a huge series and company as Final Fantasy and Square-Enix finally catching up to other RPG's that released over the pass 10 years. With visible monsters, different battle mechanics, and dumping a lot of the superficial story that the fans praise them on. Games like SMT: Nocturne/ Lucifer's Call and Shadow Hearts 2 started taking the spotlight from the big player SE by using basic gameplay with game-altering tweaks and well-written story (for their medium).

The biggest fault of SE is not giving the XII team another game/new series to perfect their gameplay system but going back to ATB which was mastered in X-2 (after god knows how many FF's). Raising Matsuno from the grave and allowing him total control over his own projects wouldn't hurt neither.

An interesting debate this, seeing as there are also plenty of people out there who absolutely despise FF7 and think it was the beginning of the end for the series. A lot of the old-school FF fans will tell you that FF6 was the peak and was the last truly great FF game.

Personally I like FF7 but I don't approach each game in the series with the attitude of 'how is this game not as good as FF7', I just take each one on it's own terms and try to enjoy them for what they are - I don't compare them to some idea of 'perfection' which probably never existed anyway.

Its not that I didn't like XI, its one of the best MMO's out there I just didn't count it because its just a diffrent kind of game thats hard to compare, sorry I dissapointed you with my thread. I didn't say that I-VI were bad games, I just said that VII was the best and that XIII could be the first worthy successor to VII. I-VI couldn't be a successor of VII cause they were before VII

Thank you UltimaMasamune

I don't really care about FFXIII being a worthy successor to FF7, I just hope it is a great game in it's own right that shows what the PS3 can really do and what a truly next generation RPG is supposed to be like.

I didn't make a mockery of his taste I just said "if you are still hanging onto FFVII as the best then you won't see nothing like it" with different wording. The longer you are 'disappointed' or something is unable to achieve what your idea of perfection is the less you will see anything match it, I think. The topic creator still loves FFVII so I do not think XIII will be better to him, maybe at first it will but as time goes on it won't compare.

I never quite caught this argument. I always see FFXI as having more of the 'Final Fantasy' soul then any released in the last 10-12 years. It may be online and may not be turn-based (though it does have a ATB style system) but it consists of everything else right down to Cid, moogle slaves, job abilities, old spells like Blink, and Ultima Weapon (looking like he did in V no less). It being online never really changed the fact that it is a Final Fantasy. FF always stood for something that constantly changes not something stationary which is what a lot of posters here don't like Dragon Quest because it stays very similar.

I can never make a comment on XI because I've never played it. In no way do I think it's bad but like Desi said I don't have the time or money to play it so i'm not in a position to judge.

I never compare FF games to each other, its a bit silly as they are all made by different teams, have a different outlook, style of play, etc. This is what sets FF apart in my opinion, what keeps it fresh is the constant re-invention.

I mean I love VII as much as the next man, but I also love VIII, VI and IX immensly. X is prehaps my favourite and I believe X-2 is ridiculously underated. I didn't like XII but I recognise its good points (re-vamped battle system was good, a little too repetitive at times though) as well as its (in my opinion many) bad points.

What I want from XIII is a tottally new experience. However I am glad that the team from X is back, as I felt the charecter development and narrative was at its peak in X.

But if you think about it, didn't FFVII do the same thing. I know FXIII will be its own game, but didn't VII do the same thing with the PSone that we believe XIII will do with the PS3. VII showed(at the time) what the next generation of RPG's should look like, and basically explained the way to make a great 3D RPG. Hopefully with XIII will will see a similar evolution in RPG's. Right now on the new consoles there really hasn't been an epic RPG. Hopefully, and i'm sure it will, XIII will evolutionize RPG's for years to come.

While ffVII was my favorite. I also like to take each game as I find it. and judge it as a stand alone title. Each game brings with it a sense of individuality while at the same time being familier. not an easy feat to achive.
so long as they keep the long endings which leave you feeling like you have achived something after 100+ hours of gameplay I'll keep investing my time and enjoying it.

oh and as for FFXI I fundamentaly disagree with having to pay to buy the game then having to pay more to actually play it. FF or not it's a rip off

That's true enough, but the problem is just that some people have this almost romantic attachment to FFVII that they are blinded to the greatness of some of the later games. The best way to look at it is to say that with the PS3 the series has a clean slate, a new start and not to constantly compare it with what has gone before. Don't worry about how FFXIII will compare to FFVII - the chances are it's going to be a great game in it's own right and that's all that really matters.

I disagree with the whole 'paying to play a game I already bought' aspect too, I've never played FFXI, also partly because I don't have the time to dedicate to playing an MMO for long enough to really get anything out of it. And the huge focus on tedious level grinding you find in such games isn't really my idea of fun.
