I've only played DQ8 and it kind of sucked if you ask me. The characters were no fun at all, (Especially the king DX), the plot didn't develop that well, the music is uninspiring and uses pretty much the same tune in every song, the gameplay is like a 2.0 version of FF1, and..... yea you can tell from my post that I didn't like it.
Well,I have only played DQ8 too, the only thing good about it was the monster arena. I kinda liked the battle system, once you got some cool moves. I did think that some of the characters were really funny but overall the game kinda stunk.
DQ8 wasn't all bad, though. I actually liked most of the characters and the gameplay was okay. What I didn't like about the game was that the storyline was too cliche. I sometimes like cliche but I was hoping for something else when I played that game.
Oh and as for the hero not speaking, Link never talked either but I LOVED the Zelda franchise.
I haven't got to the Monster Arena yet, but if it's as good as people make it out to be then it'll be a welcome addition in my eyes. This game has got me hooked at the moment, I played from yesterday evening until the early hours of this morning.

if DQ8 is what i think it is, here in UK its called DQ - journey of the coursed King... and if its the same one, its an amzing an deferent game, its not like FF games obviasly, you cant compare, just like KHs... its deferent and very coloufull game.. Im playing atm and so far no complaints.
Need to give a chance
my question is, couse i like it so much, and aparantly its actualy the best selling series in Japan, more than FF, is there any new dragon quests coming out on PS3.. couse i know theres for Wii and DS... stupid runing games like that, couse now il have to buy a Wii to play it lol but hopefully they will releace one for PS.
I finished Dragon Quest 8 and went through most of Dragon Quest 5 on the DS.
I'd say that DQ8 is not bad, but nothing as stellar as people say, especially for the hype they build for it in Japan.
DQ5 on the other hand is really good, great story, music, characters.
But I do understand Hitoshura's pain regarding this game. I have lot's of complains about them too.
1. Random battles are in almost every 3 steps. It could've not been a problem because there's an item that removes them, but you HAVE to farm so many levels in this game that makes it even more boring.
2. There are some parts that are so convoluted about what to do that makes you wonder how could anyone figure it out. And I don't mean having freedom to go anywhere, of course not. I'll give an example from DQ8: sometime in the plot, you need to go to a cave, but it's closed and to open it you need an orb, which you get later. (so far no problem) but then you realize the orb is not charged, and to charge it you need to go to the opposite side of the map, using your boat, stay in the ocean, fighting random battles until you find a water dragon, and before he uses a shiny attack you must use the orb as an item. Then you charge it, and can now open the door to the cave.
My point is, most of time there are so many little stuff to do that you don't even remember why you are doing them and some of them are so hard to even imagine without a FAQ that takes all the fun away from the game. There are even more things I dislike about this game, but I'll stick to what bothers me more and appears to be in every game of the franchise.

Dragon Quest VIII:The Journey of the Cursed King is my favourite game so it´s my duty to defen it.
Beleive me, if you are looking for a tradicional turn based japenese rpg there is no game better than DQVIII.
Orchestal musics were awesome specially the batle and map theme. Batle system is basicly the same than the first NES rpgs but if you talk about chalenge it surpass any other rpg. There was a perfect balance between hard and easy, that´s why i liked so much the gameplay. Its not like final fantasy games where if you die you just need to trow a phoenix down. If one of your chars die in Dragon Quest you´ll have a big problem.
Exploration is the best i ever seen. The map was so huge and there were so many optional places to visit. The day-night cycle is a great feature too.
In my opinion Dragon Quest VIII is a flawless game.
I played too Dragon Quest IV and it suckes, Dragon Quest V has a good story and music but gameplay sucks too. Dragon Quest IX is lame.
So, in my opinion Final Fantasy series is inded better than Dragon Quest but there is no final fantasy game better than Dragon Quest VIII. As i said before, Dragon Quest VIII is the best tradicional rpg ever, if you dont like tradicional rpgs you wont be able to enjoy Dragon Quest VIII. You cant look to it as a cool morden and inovating jrpg like fina fantasy.
