What do Uncharted and Final Fantasy have in common? Not much at the moment, but that may be changing according to Final Fantasy XIII director Motomu Toriyama.
Speaking at GDC last night, Toriyama talked extensively about the recently released Final Fantasy XIII and the differences between Western and Easter game design theory. Looking back at Final Fantasy XIII, Toriyama noted that player interaction was limited almost exclusively to battle sequences. In future Final Fantasy titles, the Japanese developer is looking to involve the player more in cutscenes, adding another layer of interactivity.
His model for this, Toriyama said, was Uncharted 2. He was inspired by the way Naughty Dog involved players in action sequences that would normally be relegated to cut scenes in a traditional Final Fantasy game.
”I think there will be more interactivity (in future Final Fantasy cut scenes) — if you have 1000 flying dragons, hopping from one dragon to the other would be great fun," said Toryiama.“If you can achieve that compared with Uncharted 2, I think that Final Fantasy is going to replicate the masterpieces of film, and that is certainly one of our goals.”
People, remember that in the PS days we had a new entry every one or two years. And they're consider the best FF games be almost everyone. I'm not saying they should bring a new FF every year, mainly because working in PS3 is a looooot different than on the PS1.
I think the main problem here is that they outwhored the franchise with all the spinoffs and shit. And that they announce a game 100 years before it's released.
They have different teams, I think spin-offs don't delay the main titles at all, since different people are working on them. It's annoucing them 5 years before it's ready that's fucking stupid. If nobody knew about Versus, nobody'd be complaining that it's not out yet. I understand that they want to create hype, but you don't need 5 years (or more) to do that, 1-2 is enough. Other than that, I don't know how SE works so I can't say much. Maybe it's just a matter of planning.
That's nice and all, but isn't Versus doing that anyway? Or at least what we've been promised? All this tells me is that the other teams don't speak to one another. But I look forward to any improvements.

Well Nomura has said that Versus has been put on the back burner many times for the KH titles he's putting out....which granted, are making money for the company, but I don't know how handheld game sales stack up against console game sales in terms of company profit and all that. It must be working or they wouldn't do it.
