In an interview with Dorimaga gaming publication, Tetsuya Nomura has said the following regarding the Final Fantasy VII remake rumors:
"It appears that there are often overseas rumors like 'Are you currently developing a VII remake?' My apologies, but were absolutely not making [such a game]."
This statement, however, does not kill all hope. Later on Nomura added:
"We of course know ourselves what the fans want so we'd like to continue thinking up a variety of things. As long as there are people who want to make it and people who are waiting for it, we don't want to proclaim 'the end.'"
Damn you soul! I was just typing a thread about this I see you saw it on Gametrailers as well
Well at least its finally confirmed. No more speculation about it. Overall it's probably for the best they leave a classic as it is. Heres a link to the full article:

They already said no FFVII DS. Id be so pissed off if they made it for DS. I think they know how many people want it for PS3 [note SE Party] and since they already have the white engine things wouldnt be as difficult, but then saying that it would be 100x easier on DS. XD
I dont ever expect a remake really, but since theyve remade I II III and now are onto IV its only a matter of time until FFVII comes next in the list. ;p
We still have 10 years of the FFVII compilation left. I still expect a FFVII remake, but not for a very a long time. But seriously, its time that Square started listening to what the fans want. >.<

Anyway I would want so much more. FFVII remake confirmed.
The IGN article also has some interesting info about the background to FFVII and Sakaguchi's original ideas for the storyline:
Quote:
Outside of these comments, the two shared a few interesting insights into the development of what is arguably the most renown Final Fantasy game to date.
Nomura recalled the creation of the game's plot, which was originally written by Hironobu Sakaguchi, now of Mistwalker. Nomura, who claims to still have a copy of the plot, noted how "completely different" it is from the final version. "I think he wanted to do something like a detective story? There was a character called Hot Blooded Detective Joe."
The Midgar city was already in place at this point. The early part of the story that was written by Sakaguchi involved Detective Joe chasing after the main characters, who then blow up the city.
Obviously, the story changed some once Nomura and Kitase got involved. While Nomura went off into the character design and visual work following some initial changes to Sakaguchi's plot, Kitase and Kazushige Nojima came up with the sections on Avalanche and Shinra, Cloud's background story, and the relationship between Cloud and Sephiroth. Sakaguchi came up with the specifics on the Life Stream in his original plot, but this also saw some work by Kitase and crew before finally being placed in the game.
Nomura said that AC will only last 20 minutes?
and that he wasn't going to KH 2 FM +....lol....that means that when he denies something then he makes it! so FF 7 remake is going to be made after all
AC used to be only a 20 minute long film which stared only Tifa, Cloud and some children with hardly any fight scenes and loads of drama then the film spread worldwide and Nomura was realised how big it could be thus increased the length. I think at the moment they won't make a VII remake but its an option for the future. They seem to be remaking every other FF for every other console apart from the PS1 ones (excluding FF6) so they should do it one day.
Like said with Flint in the FFIV remake thread for a VI remake. Okami cel-shaded watercolor awesome, next-gen system, Amano art. Maybe amano would be happy again?
I want watercolour beauty in a game that looks like nothing else, an Amano concept painting come to life. I'd prefer it if it was a completely new game rather than an old FF remake, though. Amano for FFXIV! That's what I want to see!
I don't dislike Nomura, but his character designs are all over Square's games at the moment, almost to the point of overkill, so I'd love it if we could finally have a game where the characters and world actually looked like Amano's concept designs. There has never been a game like this and it's so disappointing.
Well Amano and Usematsu both believe VI was the last FF. Amano is a little more skewed though because Terra/Tina is his favorite character (Faris from V is second) and the last he worked on. The last game that used his art was kartia for playstation I think even though he always does character art for the FF's just because he enjoys it.
