He also said that while user passwords had not been encrypted, they were transformed using a simpler function called a hash that did not leave them exposed as clear text.
I hope this hash thing is just as reliable as encryption...

A hash function is (although better than a substitution cipher) the lowest form of protection. Easily hackable. PSN is used by millions of customers so the encryption should have at least been decent.

Not that I'm ready to bash them for it, but I'd like to hear the reasons why they went with such protection.

I imagine they thought rudimentary protection was sufficient. This would be their last line of defense, after all; the network would have to be hacked before information could be decrypted.

I hope they let this be a lesson. Hopefully they will be smart enough not to let this happen again.

Important Step for Service Restoration

Countries: AE, AU, GB, IE, NZ

Today our global network and security teams at Sony Network Entertainment and Sony Computer Entertainment began the final stages of internal testing of the new system, an important step towards restoring PlayStation Network and Qriocity services.
As previously mentioned, we’ve been working around the clock to rebuild the network and enhance protections of your personal data. It’s our top priority to ensure your data is safe when you begin using the services again.
We understand that many of you are eager to again enjoy the PlayStation Network and Qriocity entertainment services that you love, so we wanted you to be aware of this milestone and our progress. We will provide additional updates as soon as we can.

I was about to shout "yay" then I realized that it was America they were talking about.

EDIT: I just read that it's partially restored in Europe, so yay!
