I want to go to college and get a degree and make video games, and eventually, dream job, Square Enix. In 10-15 years, that's where I want to be. But I'm talking to my parents about and and they're like "You might not even like it, you might end up switching and doing something else."
It's not that I don't want to realize that I don't like something and end up doing something else. But if, in 10-15 years, I'm not making video games and/or working for Square Enix, I'm going to be really pissed, regardless if I'm doing something I actually like or not. Pissssseeeddd. Well I say that right now maybe I'll be thankful. Who knows.
Am I alone here? Or is this weird, and I'm just some kind of freak?
you wanna be able to fulfill your dream, or else might have regret or resentment about it for a long time. that's a normal case and you're not alone at all.
I totally feel that way. I've always felt that making video games is something that I would love doing, but I really have no talent in the arts or graphic design / animation / whatever. So, I figured that I can simply enjoy what others make.
And, I mean, a lot of people change their majors several times while in college, or end up going back to school after earning a degree. It's just a guessing game, really.
But, I say that if it's something you've set your sights on, I say go to school for it and see how you like it. If it isn't your cup of tea, you can transfer somewhere else and take a different route.
I think I kind of got off subject a little bit, but...
i have ideas, for video games and comics but i just need to start drawing them and writing them down so i can get a good practice in what i want them to look like and how i want their personalities. i can come up with superheroes like that and a good enough background story. so i guess one day i would wanna pitch this and maybe see if this goes somewhere, but i don't thinking of badly it could be shut down
trust me, your life will suck more once you've graduated from college and still aren't doing anything with your life, lol. just sayin'
but no, you're not a freak and I think it's something a lot of people go through *shrug*. At least you have a dream you're shooting for, so just work towards it. You're still young so your dreams may change as you get older *which is probably hard to imagine right now, but it does happen*. The important thing is that you end up doing something your passionate about.
*don't kill me, I'm just trying to be realistic*My one concern about working for Square-Enix specifically would be that work opportunities are probably limited for Americans/non-Japanese -- they're probably limited to mostly marketing or translating...basically something with less direct in involvement in the development process, but a lot could change in 10-15 years so who knows!
You're not alone, dude! My dream is to work for Square Enix, too, as an animator. Ever since I was little I've ALWAYS wanted to work in the animation field, be it for cartoons, video games, Disney Pixar, or whatever. *sigh* It seems impossible now but...I'm not gonna give up. I'd be happy just landing a job as a translator. I wish you the best. Hope you end up designing awesome games wherever you end up, Square or not! ; )
I am already there ,its not yer parents who decide ,just do what you want ethan! My parents dint kerr about me going in video games and cinema, they just wanted to be sure that there is job after when i am graduating!
It's always good and inspiring to meet people with hopes and dreams. But it's even better to meet some who define them and know how to follow them. I mean, ok, let's focus on your main goal: Square Enix. Apart from having decided that you want to work there, have you ever thought of a way to actually do this or, at least, if that is even possible? Cause after your dreams there's also a reality to consider too. It's what Arashi XIII said.

It's true that a lot could change in 15 years but there's also the opposite possibility. I would suggest doing some research and even getting in contact with them if possible to see how things work there. Personally I find it less pissing to just ''adjust'' your dreams now that you are able to than to find yourself, say 15 years from now, regretting not having thought carefully. On the other hand, you could always try just for not regretting not having done so. Oh well, it is becoming quite confusing.
Anyway, whatever the case I wish you luck my friend. I'll be waiting to see your name in Final Fantasy XVIII's credits.
Well I have gone through the possibilities and have decided that everything I can do that might heighten my chances a little, I'm going to work towards, say, learning Japanese finally and fully for one.
As for as the whole it being hard for non-Japanese, I've actually been to their job listings and a bunch are available and specifically targeted towards people outside of Japan, at least as far as the US is concerned. These actually, are jobs in Japan and Square Enix says that they will even get you a Work Visa for you, which I found interesting, funnily enough, knowing Japanese didn't show up in some of the requirements, but I wanna say that that was only because it would be pretty much a given.
Wasn't the now cancelled FFXII spin-off being developed by the Square Enix's European branch or something along that way?
Possibly they entrust their more sperimental games to externals/non-Japanese studios, and work on their flagship titles themselves.
Either way, I doubt it would be that much harder to be hired there. I'm not under the silly impression that it will be easy, Square's one of the top companies these days, I'll probably have to start out where I can and work my way up. A lot of the requirements lists have something like "at least 2 Xbox 360 or PS3 game shipped that you worked on" Although when I'm finally up for it it will probably be something like "at least 1 PS4 title shipped" xD
Good to hear you are quite informed then, both of you. Yeah, go for it, why not? As long as you follow your dream you'll be able to get through the hard stuff. In the end all of us will eventually face difficulties in our ways. Having a reason to keep trying and motive to continue though will be important I guess.
So how are you planning to start, if I may ask? Or have you already begun?
Im glad Im not the only one who wants to work for SE. Im doubting my chances though...Ive failed in my private attempts to learn programming and Japanese. Still I have one year of highschool left though, maybe I can learn a little something over the next year and look for a college.

I hope it's not weird. I think I'm kinda going through the same thing as you. This is also my dream job and am currently going through college for it. Saying that "you might not like it" is like saying you're going to fail without even trying. Maybe this might not happen and maybe it will, but I know for me at least it won't hurt to give it a shot.
Like someone else said, people switch majors all the time( I switched once so far) and I think it's great for weeding out something you know you won't like by actually trying it our first.
Though, just to point out, I'd settle for working with any major game company and then hopefully branch out on my own.

You should aspire yourself to what you want. If it is physically and emotionally possible then you have every reason to do so.
And you shouldn't worry about your parents to a certain extent; of course you want them to support you but sometimes it isn't the case.
My parents aren't exactly happy I've chosen to do a Game Art & design Degree course, my father feels it's a waste of time as he absolutely hates games himself and refuses to involve himself within my own work.
My mother is generally supportive but not overly enthusiastic over the whole Game design job idea.
I'm glad I'm taking this course, this is who I want to be, this is what I want for my future career, and I'm not going to have people tell me otherwise.
Your definitely not alone here.
Aspire to something you want to be. If you want it bad enough, you will go the extra mile just to achieve it and wont let anybody tell you otherwise.
