I didn't like it that much either. At first, it was fun, but then it just got a bit repetitive. The Espers were also completely useless. Your party could do waaaay more damage that just your one character and an esper. Also, the plot was bad. Really bad. An empire that fell to a tyrant? Yeah, real original. Not to mention the characters. Vaan, Penelo, and Fran had no role in the plot at all. They should've made Basch the main character. Or at least Reks. NOT REKS' BABY BROTHER.
You have to admit though, Balthier was awesome, and yeah, Reks was cooler than Vaan. I liked the storyline becuase it was a change from the past few FF's.
If Balthier had been the main character...I think I could have handled it. But I HATED FF12. 10/10 is bull. The main character....wasn't even a main character....he was just one of teh princess's body guards pretty much.
The story does start off very slowly, it was really boring before you AT LEAST tried to break in the castle and steal the treasure, after that, it was still pretty boring until you got to Archades, after that is was okay.
I thought that FFXII was at least better than X-2, but then again that is not saying very much.
I have the game next to me now and I'm actually going to start playing it this week. I've watched Dante play some and I have to agree, Balthier is definitley the best character. Penelo seems to just be a boring version of Rikku and Vann just has no personality what so ever...I know it doesn't happen but I wish there was a secret ending where he died a horrible death.
I'm in Raithwall's tomb right now. I can't get past the friggin' Beldias...Yeah go ahead and make fun of me all you want.
I think the excitement so far has only been breaking into the Castle.
Ninja Edit: I never use Vaan. Penelo scares me slightly. My party contains Balthier, Fran, and Ashe most of the time. I do alternate Ashe with Basch sometimes. Balthier is the best character.

At least Vaan isn't whiny after the first hand full of hours, he is just a childish and ignorant. My biggest complaint against Tidus was his constant complaining. Don't make me post my Penelo post here too.
FF12 just lacked the heart of its predecessors. As for the main character, I consider Ashe as the lead because she was the only character that actually had some development. The other characters had some too but it was hardly any.

The fault with seeing everything by "development" is most of the characters were in their 20's+. They have already developed their character. No may not have noticed it because they was no reason for them to change. Soldiers/princess/nobility are different then civilians.
My Penelo post explains her reason for not having a turnaround(matured early). Fran is already 200+ so there she should be obvious. Vaan is your vessel just getting to experience things normal people don't.
But no Vaan was a civilian. So you experience the events unfold out of the eyes of an ignorant citizen.
At least Tidus had a reason to be following Yuna etc around and being a body guard. Did Vann, Penelo and Fran really need to tag along? Penelo barely even spoke in cuts scenes and if she did it was pointless crap like "It's so big", nothing that actually adds to the story or anything like that.
Why are reviewers saying this game is good?
