Okay, hear me out. First, we're going to ignore one thing that make most RPGs unsuitable for multiplayer, and that's the fact that to run smoothly, only one character can be in control outside of battle.
Anyways, as I go through all this footage, I'm rather stricken by the amount of tactical prowess and more importantly teamwork that it requires. Unlike previous Final Fantasies, you can't really just devote two characters to hitting and one to healing (if you even need the healing). This got me to thinking that with a simple change, the battles could have been really fun to have two people participate in. That change would be allowing individuals to select their Paradigm roles in the heat of battle.
Just with so many things to consider, like buffs, healing, damage-dealing and breaking the enemy, it seems like this could have made a very good multiplayer experience. Even summoning would have been well supported by it, in that you have a character and their Eidolon fighting together. Food for thought, I guess.
Dude they already confirmed FF V XIII has 4 player co-op. With the telekenisis, you can summon a humungous sword and each get to control a swing in your summon. Also, Noctis is the only one with a sword, as he is a prince

Also, I'd like to point out that I'm not taking a stance of "OMG SQUARE DROPPED DUH BALL", but rather noting that the gameplay, unlike the gameplay of most RPGs, seems very compatible with multiplayer.
