It's pretty dumb. Lightning as a gruff badass may be one of the longest stretches in the history of the world. It's funny how the UI is different, but battles still look exactly the same. Just what are you up to, Square Enix?

I was embarrassed for myself, I was embarrassed for all of you, and I was especially embarrassed for Square Enix. That's Resident Evil-level crap right there.

Recycled animations, recycled NPCs; all point to a very short development period, which subsequently leads to a short game.
Subpar quality aside, I am ok with this.

Battle system seems to be upped to Crisis Core-style (no longer will we just be sitting there pressing the X button till the battles are over), game seems more dark than the rest of them and there's still heaps we haven't seen. Quite promising from a first trailer. Really surprised that it was actually done in English instead of Japanese.
This trailer managed to convince me that I probably won't buy this game. Unless they really go into specifics about the battle system that is. It has a new interface, yet the combat looks exactly the same.
"Hey guys, tired of pressing X and L1? Well now you can press square and circle in combat too!"
Crisis Core, is that you? You've gotten... bitchier.
Seriously though, if the combat is as it looks and is really a Crisis Core clone, count me in. Yes, I will indeed take an HD game that plays like CC. It had a really nice compromise between turn-based and action RPGs that I couldn't get enough of. Lightning Returns seems to function near-identically. Moving freely in combat? Check. Guard and dodge-roll? Check. Attacks that execute at the press of a button? Check. The reason that it looks so familar is that they naturally reused a ton of animations for just about everything. I don't have a problem with this; faster production time and it maintains a visual consistency that should really be present in the same setting with the same character.
And the stagger bar is dead. We're free, people. We're finally free.
