It would seem there is a huge base of fans that claim Final Fantasy VII is by far the best Final Fantasy and perhaps RPG of all time. Square has capitalized on this with numerous story expansions: a sequel movie and game, a cell phone game, a prequel game, I'm sure I'm forgetting something else. There are also rumors and demands surrounding a possible remake that have been pushed aside, but not completely abandoned, on my occasions.
Why do you think Final Fantasy VII has garnered this reputation? Do you think the game is deserving of all the praise and attention? Do you think it's an exaggeration? Share your thoughts!
It was the first "cool" RPG and broke the genre into the mainstream. I personally think it's a very good game too; I wouldn't say it's my favourite Final Fantasy, but it's up there.
When I first played it I hadn't had the brains to really understand it. Even now when I compare it with other RPGs I find many to be better at first, but after replying 7 a while ago and remembering all the tiny details and the actual story and noticing and learning bout stuff I didn't see there before... yeah to me it's pretty much the best RPG I had so far

I mean it's popular. the Greatest of all time? I don't know. but being that it was one of the first RPGs to be played on the playstation with the graphics and story and blah blah blah, it's pretty high up there. but being that final fantasy X was the first one I played, VII could have second place in my black heart.
It existed at the right time. It's overtly political stance with regards to the use of finite resources is also noteworthy and probably the best part of the game.

I think I get why it's so loved - at the time it was something so good and so successful. It's a good solid game.
Having said that I think there are a lot of things far over rated in it. I don't think the story is as perfect as fans often pretend. I liked the story but there was a lot that didn't fit together or make sense. This sometimes got worse with the compilations instead of better and nothing has ever really been cleared up.
I don't like the materia system. Everyone seems to love it but for me there was no variation to the characters really at all and it bored me to tears using it. A lot of the magic from the beginning of the game was useful all the way through so there wasn't much need to expand further and search for better materia because nearly all of the basic ones levelled up themselves.
There were too many characters that meant nothing, Cid was the worst one for me, he had little to no impact on the story and really didn't need to be in the party. Vincent had more relevance than Cid and he was optional.
So while I can understand why a lot of people like the game, I can't understand why it's hailed as the best ever now when there are many games better than it just in the Final Fantasy series.
At the time of its release, Final Fantasy VII was, in my opinion, the best RPG there was out there. It was technically amazing, with few games that came even close in level of presentation, technological prowess and depth of system. On top of that, it had a story that was very atypical for its time, and that held together remarkably well. In just about every way, the game was a masterpiece, and it set a lot of the standards and trends still used today! It deserves remembrance for this.
However, the game is very old now. Compared to current games, of course it's going to be terribly primitive in many respects. People who came into the series later or who have no frame of reference for how games were back then take this to mean that Final Fantasy VII is a pretty bad game, and to an extent they're right. If Final Fantasy VII were released now- that is to say, in its current state- I doubt many people would have a problem saying it sucked. It's still enjoyable for many, including myself, but even the most zealous fan should remember that the game is practically an antique.
Still, I'm on the side of those who believe that it deserves the love it gets, simply for all that it did and the gleaming gem it really was in its time.

I agree with you that it deserves praise for what it offered at the time of its release and that it was a masterpiece when it was created.
What annoys me is that it gets more praise that it deserves,i mean yes it was a great game back then but people should stop treating it like the best game ever created to date.
Also there are a lot of people acting like assholes over this game
if you so much as disagree on that with them.
Another reason that makes me actually hate this game is the fact that
newer final fantasy games will always be compared to FFVII
and not only will be compared but LOSE to it as well.
I dont like the fact that FFVIII and FFIX got the shit treatment by FFVII fans
even though those games did everything FFVII did but better,be it graphics or gameplay.
TL;DR: Yes the game was great but it does not deserve all the hype it gets today.
PS:been a while since i practiced english or typed a post this long,if shet englash forgiev pls
I think it deserved the praise it got at the time it came out but now people turn it into something it wasn't.
As in what?
It's popular for a reason, a gripping story combined with a really well-functioning battle mechanics got me in from the very start of the game. And I wasn't even playing it at THAT time. I actually got to play it for the first time a while ago.
Not my fave in the series, but it's up there.

no. that was good. no problems understanding it
part of me feels like a poll should've been made with this.

I disagree on this one. Me too played VII in 2009 the first time actually. My first FF was X, IX is the worst one to me. I never judge games on graphics, that's just low and gameplay-wise neither VIII nor IX nor X beat VII. It had a good battle system, I liked the materia system very much, it has side quests, optional characters, mini games, lots of things to search for and unlock, and the story.. it's not the best nowadays and all that exploit the planet thing became a cliche but compared to other FFs the story is the best. This is just my opinion though

Funny, I could swear JRPGs at least had been almost universally terrible lately. Certainly nothing that was proportionally as good as VII was in its heyday.
IX and X were both better than VII was in its time, as far as I'm concerned. But I've never been one to give a shit over graphics until recent years, so that would be why.
VII was my first FF and RPG, and I owe it for getting me into the series, but I wouldn't call it the best anything ever, if I'm being honest.
I loved the materia system, it actually had so many skills I sometimes struggled with what to use. From the simple magic materia to the more awesome Ultima and Contain (Freeze, Flare etc.), Enemy Skill was pretty awesome too. Some of the skills could only be gotten by using the manipulate materia which was pure genius for a game released at that time.
The combinations you could use were also helpful, the All materia, Added Effect, Quadra Magic etc and Counter and Double Cut, Mime and even the status increase like Luck Plus and Magic plus, I could go on and on. You had freedom to make the characters what you wanted them to be with it. I still love it and rate it as my favourite to this very day.
The limit system was also just pure awesomeness wrapped with more awesome.
Also feel it was a gutsy move...
Spoiler:
Killing off Aeris. Hell, when I first played it and seen Cloud in the wheelchair I thought here we go again. For awhile I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
The one thing that I would say is, They should have given some of the bosses a lot more HP. Some of them weren't all that challenging with all that materia at my disposal. (With the exception of the Weapons.)
