Browsing the GAF because I have nothing better to do, This thread. You know, for if you're one of the 5 Final Fantasy fans in the world who would rather play it on PC. Legend has it that the stock PC version was atrocious, by the way.
Last week, Square Enix registered the domain finalfantasyviipc.com and Jake and I had a laugh about it and the potential for people to lose their fucking minds. After all they were just domain sitting or releasing it on Steam or GOG (entries for VII and VIII appeared in the Steam content registry months ago, apparently).
No one lost their minds, so for starters, shame on you all for not providing entertainment. Secondly, now the domain appears to have actual content that can be accessed via Google Cache. The release will feature achievements, God Mode-type function and cloud saves (so presumably through Steam, unless they're shitty enough to run their own awful service for it).
The site also seems set to host a bunch of wallpapers.
7.99GBP/9.99EUR, unknown date, maybe after the Steam summer sale. Or right before if they want to take advantage of the increased, constant traffic over that period with some storefront space.

By 'Cloud saves' they aren't talking about the internet cloud, but FFVII Cloud. The missing word is 'Aerith'. That will be an option this time around.[/lolno]
Also, as this is a PC release, I assume the 'enhancement' will be what FFs I and II got for their re-release.

They're clearly testing the waters for a remake. Anyone who doesn't see this is not only absurd, but woefully stupid. I would say we'll see a remake in the next couple of years. There's absolutely no reason not to get totally excited about this, and everyone should.

That's where it gets weird, though. If you were Square Enix and changes to the visuals and audio were being done, wouldn't you have that as your key feature above achievements, god mode and cloud saves?
But at the same time, the sound on the original PC release was MIDI junk and sounded like shit on most machines and the pre-rendered backgrounds look like shit on a thrown-up biscuit once you start enlarging them beyond their native resolution, so are they making these changes are they redoing the backgrounds and getting the original audio, are they going through and fixing grammatical errors in the text and changing instances of Aeris to Aerith? Why not talk that up as a major selling point because it is a far greater one than cheevs, character boosting and the cloud.
And if all that work is being done, wow, putting what is more or less the definitive version on PC and (apparently) nothing else? Strange. Strange and probably going to anger the more... vocal PlayStation supporters.
BIZARRE, SQUARE ENIX, YOU MAKE NO SENSE.
My theory as to how this came about, though, is that some young intern stumbled across the source code for the PC version while going through a bunch of old Eidos stuff. Which is actually kind of a big deal, no one believed in preserving anything back then because they didn't think it'd have any use in the future.

Hopefully this rerelease can still be modified, as the original PC version did. Graphical updates such as this can happen, not to mention making the sound quality extremely great, better than the PS1 version. SE better be wise enough to fix that MIDI garbage. However, I don't have high hopes.
Spoiler:
Hoping this means a Final Fantasy VIII release with online Triple Triad is on the way.

Am I the only one who doesn't want a remake? Just leave FFVII alone man, every attempt of a remake is doomed to fail.

UPDATE: Square Enix responded to our query with an official comment, but it's probably not the comment you were hoping for. "Regarding Final Fantasy VII, we don’t have any news or information to announce at this time." You can take some comfort in the fact that the cached website wasn't marked as a hoax or anything, but it looks like any announcements -- if there is indeed an announcement coming -- will have to wait for another day.
