Just like different video games on the same console are all basically the same. Seeing as you are hitting the same buttons on the controller.
Seemingly pointless quests that have no relevance to the character are annoying to people with tastes similar to mine. Yeah, I don't care about the random NPC's toy, just like I don't care about hunting down a random monster that I have no motivation to track down and kill other than the guild/wanted poster/whatever tells me I should. Now, it is a different story when my group has to hunt it down because doing so has some relevance, such as that monster having attacked my group or other characters that make for a personal motivation to do so (like this monster is burning towns to the ground, killed my parents, etc.) or there is some reason to kill the thing to directly get something I need (it is guarding an ore used to forge me a sword, or better yet, it is guarding the sword I want).
Doing quests that have little to no build up and their reward is pocket change that
eventually nets my characters a greater reward that is somewhat meaningful after doing dozens of other quests equally as abstract and irrelevant isn't what I consider fun. FFXII's sidequests were completely boring and annoying, and the final rewards weren't even good enough to entice me to pursue them. That isn't to say I need a stellar, tangible reward to motivate me to do anything, but if the journey of a thousand miles isn't any fun to begin with and the destination is questionably even valuable in its own right, why would one care to even take the first step?
