Yeah. Can't really be helped too. I don't do that though, I just try to win them on their forums. They have contests every month where you can win some dvd's for free.
Thing is though is that you'll be able to interact with the instructors on their forums in this event.

Great stuff. I've never used them purely because of costs, but if I had the money I'd hardly hesitate to take up this offer.
Their eye to detail and helpfulness is what makes them attractive, yet as already stated there are a few free tutorials which are more than helpful. Of course, to get the full scope such a course isn't a bad way to invest.

This is also true as well. If one searches hard enough, they can achieve something not far off the caliber of Gnomon at the expense of time instead of money.
I'd rather search around and gather tutorials though..

Oh I do that too. I always look for stuff. Pay or not to pay.
When I discovered Gnomon, I was buying there dvds. Now I just try to win them for free, which I've been successful last year this month. It's actually not really brutal. The way I see it is that the monthly contests are designed in a way that is fair and motivates people. First place is going to be handed to those who are really good. 2ed and 3rd places can be a mix. 4th place is for those who need it. If you look at all the entries, you get that itching feeling that if you were to push yourself a little more, you could earn a spot in the winners circle.
Sometimes I kinda think that Gnomon wants to give them away for free because they give away like 1980 DVD's a year.
To me though, I'm getting insight from the very best artists in the industry. I'm getting the real deal and a solid understanding on how they approach their art, tips and tricks, and how the industry works as a whole when it comes to being a concept artist or 3D modeler.
The difference between these DVD's and college is that you can't interact with the instructor.
Which is what this event will let you do.
During those weeks, you'll be able to interact with some of the best artists on the Gnomon forums. To be able to interact with an artist like Iain McCaig, who is known as the Yoda of concept art and visual storytelling, would be a honor.

Hey, do you think you can make some tutorials of a basic Human Mesh? Geez...it's crazy when you actually meet these people who have like Master experience in these programs.
I'm far from actually taking my 3D Modeling course, but I want to get a head start anyhow.
I don't do 3D. I have a couple intro DVD's for Maya and ZBrush but that's about it. I'm more focused on the 2D side of things right now but would like to learn some 3D. I want to be able to use 3D for some of the 2D stuff I do. I would one day like to just be able to model my own characters I create too. But one step at a time for me.
As for basic human mesh tutorials... Not from me no. But here are a couple of links.
True true. I recently have taken up the interest in establishing concept art before just jumping to Modeling. It is really attracting to look at modeling and see what you can produce. I have only modeled several human meshes before, but I'd like to enhance my skill.
At the moment, I'm beginning to love concept art. I really wish I could afford Gnomon's Master Classes, but I suppose I'm already in school for Game Art & Design..so.
You should also consider ZBrush too to use along side with Maya, 3Ds Max, or any other program. A lot of modelers for a character will just block in the basic shapes in Maya for example and then take it to ZBrush to sculpt the everything out. It's also great for things like folds and texturing. Some just use ZBrush exclusively. I think the characters in Gears of War were all done in ZBrush. ZBrush can also be used for 2D stuff too.
