I wasn't a huge fan of FFXII, not because of the political-based storyline, more because of the lack of character development. Its all well and good to have kingdoms fighting over territories and all, but if we don't really care about any of the major players, theres nothing to hook the viewer in.
I'd like a political-based game again, but please explore resistances, factions, conformity, control, fascism, etc well please and give us memorable characters.
Since we don't know what the people's relationship to the crystal is yet I think I might hold off on saying the religion will be a major focus, but politics will definately play a role.
It could be both. The "Scar-Guy" has the religious necklace and then there is the "mafia-like" people which could perhaps be the political system.
But it's still somewhat too early to judge on what the basis will be, even though the pictures give us a general idea.

Possibly, or maybe we're just reading too much into it. There are plenty of people who wear crucifixes and are not religious in anyway. It could just be a part of the guy's costume. I really think it's still to early to be making any guesses about the basis of the story all we have is a few pictures, some VERY general info, and some trailers with no real explaination behind them.

True. It could just be something to throw fans off.
Whenever we get more screenshots or trailers it may be easier to tell, but that's just my idea about it.
I agree with what alot people have said, i think both religion & politics will play a part in the story but unfortunatly its still to early to really be able to tell anything for certain.
Give us more info Nomura!!!!

I think it will have bases in both actually. Political is obvious because the main character is a prince, so anything he does could be deemed 'political' really. Religion will come in the form of what links all the games in Fabula Nova Crystallis, the crystal. Something has got to stem from that, and religion is a logical choice.
I do hope, however, that neither of these is the overriding theme, and that they focus more on characters and their stories. It makes the game more personal and meaningful. At least to me
I agree i think it will have some of both, i enjoyed XIIs storyline it wasn't the best but it was decent i thought. The shinigami thing makes me think it will have some religion as well and from what little we have i think that it will also be about politics. Yes i am religious, do i go to church every sunday, no, i don't see the point the priests we call father are just human and so were the saints, infact some of our saints were some of the biggest sinners, they are only human not divine.
i think that if Vs has religion(s) at least one of 'em will be catholic-like based cus i remember watching the St. Mark's basilica in some screenshots.

But the major theme is politics , regilion sounds like component. They fight for Crystals so yeahh main theme is into political conflict. Look at the scene of assemble hall where the serious-face with black-suit chairman discussing about something , maybe that place is council.
Will culture play a big role in politics here in Versus?
Because I got really turned off by the very one world political infighting that involved nothing but just airships. I saw hardly any effects what the Empire's own take over did to Dalmasca, and the conspiracy that revolved around the Mist really got me muddled.
Sorry XII fans, but seeing Versus, there's a good feeling that we'll more influences by corporations and a need of money (and more importantly, crystals), plus it's own effects on society.

I get the impression the game is going to revolve around human nature more than politics and religion. I think the worlds concept will essentially be a dystopian politically corrupt society where both politics and religion will play their parts. It is hard to see at this stage which one will be predominant but they are two sides of the same coin.
Final Fantasy XII had a great story all the way to the Leviathan. After that the quality sank.
You could tell the story was no longer Matsuno's after that. I love the plots in his games and after the Leviathan they did whatever they wanted with the story.
It had it all, if they had let him finish the game, it would possibly be my most beloved game in any category.
After mulling over this, I've decided that it would be interesting if the story was heavily influenced by politics.... I think that it would be more suitable that religion base per say since so far the trailers and interviews seem to be building heavily on international affairs and politics already.... I do believe however that it should be focused on more as an early plot device though.... I wonder how much political babble I could stand throughout the course of the game.... Regardless, if it was a heavy focus to build off of then a surprising plot turn mid-game changed it up I think it would be enjoyable....

They are both interesting if executed properly. What else is there to say? However, politics involve plotting and other interesting events more often than religion so if I had to choose a single one, I'd probably go for politics. Oh, and politics and religion aren't nearly always that different.
I don't really mind just as long as it's a lengthy, interesting plot that really makes me want to continue and finish the game. So, either politics or religion story-wise. Though, it would be nice if it was split evenly so the game focused on both. But, I have no idea how they'd do that.
