Is the PSP worth it? Ive just been reading up on the PS3 (which il be getting around october) and read about the compatibility with the PSP and im compelled to get one.
What are the bad facts about the PSP? Most sites that sell it big it up with no negatives (obviously) and what are good features that a buyer actually wants not "GRAPHXS R GOOD" like most selling sites.

Dude I'm telling you, PSP is GOD!!
You have so many more options than the rival DS.
Its almost like a friggen Wii except it doesnt play just retro nintendo games, it plays all of them.
As you might have noticed I am speaking of illegal mods here but besides those the psp has a wide variety of games in pretty much every genre (only the rpg section could use a bit more support imo...)
I've heard the PSP even has more power than the Ps2 but that developers arent allowed to fully use it yet cause of marketing plans etc etc.
Newayy this is just my uber sony fanboy opinion.

Woot! GO PSP! Get it!

It does lack some good new games. With the exception of the new ratched and clank game its not that many killer apps in the future. You should get at least 2 gig MS for movies and music. Its really not that much bad IMO. And with firmware 3.30 you can now (finally) view movies in full resolution. That was really the biggest downside of it but its fixed now. It still does not play divx and WMV im afraid. Its big so you need some large pockets for it. I usually use my jacket to carry it. I don't care much about scratches any more, but I'm surprised how well its doing without any protection in my pocket. The jostick has a bod habit to fall off after a long time. It happens to many people but you can easy put it back on. I lost mine someplace and had to create my own. -_-
What really makes the PSP good is when its hacked. Sony don't want you to know it but tens of thousands psp owners does this. If its hacked you can run homebrews that people have made. Its tons of different applications and homemade games thats already been created. Sony tries to stop this with firmwareupdates since if you can run homebrew, you can run pirated games from memorystick without any need for a hardware mod.
Firmware 1.5 allows you to run homebrews and pirated games, but on 1.5 you dont have a browser or other extra good features sony has added. A Spanish guy named Dark_AleX does a slick job to merge firmware 1.5 and the newest one. So you can have all the sony features and run homebrew.
People are also working to make PSP go from a new Sony Firmware back down to 1.5. When you are at 1.5 you can upgrade to Dark_AleX firmware with all good stuff intact.
The newest Firmware out is 3.30. Dark_AleX have fixed firmware 3.10 and called it 3.10 OE (Open Edition). He is now working on 3.30 OE
The latest firmware you can downgrade from is 3.03. To downgrade you need an unpatched version of GTA:LCS. New GTA versions have fixed a bug. A friend might have it.
If you find a PSP in stores with FW 2.71 you can downgrade without the GTA game. But i think they are all gone.
So if you buy a PSP, get one with firmware 3.03 or lower.
(pfew, that was alot)
If you wonder what homebrew can do, I can tel you that the have managed to run win 95 and macintosh on it. It takes half and hour to boot them but you get the idea. Anything can created for homebrew. Remote controls, quake 1 and 2, email readers, gba/nes/atari++ emulators. Someone just come up with a MMO FF Cardgame for it.
BTW: When you downgrade and upgrade without sonys official ways you do risk a very slim chance to brick it. That means you destroys your psp firmware inside and makes it unusable

I also read on this forum (or another) that you can port (illegally?) games like FF7 onto it.
That would REALLY appeal to me. I would buy one just for that reason. If you can, il buy one tomorrow (ebay sales ftw)
(Your post wasn't here when i posted this Enedok, gonna read it now)

PSP is well good. It cant do much to do with PS3 yet though. Also... It doesnt have that many good games. xD I mainly use it for MP3, pics, music, video and internet. Also Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops and Locoroco are amazing!
Up coming games like Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII and Silent Hill: Origins look really good. :D
Edit:

Yes you can run it, I have. And it dont have to be illeagal. The psp has a psone emulator thanks to the sony service of psone games on ps3 stores. But it really supports and emulates all psone games. You have to have a costum Firmware, convert you FFVII cds on your comp (or download the psone ISO) til a format that the psp can read and then simply put the converted finle into ms:/psp/game/FFVII/ folder
The converting program is called popstation and its a lot of different ones.

iPod can use firewire yes.
But about the PSP thing, I recommend you buy a 4 or 8 gig memorystick with it (4 gig costs like 70 to 92 dollar somewhere on the net, and I bought my 8 gig for 150 euros)
A ps1 game like FFVII which was 4 discs large takes around 1.5 gigs of memory on your psp. And remember that if for example you use a 2gig memstick you dont actually have access to 2gigs of disk space but more like 1.6gig...
And I assume you also want to have ordinary psp games, music and movies on your psp at the same time so I recommend going for the 4 or 8gig memorystick.
I love my 8 gig to bits and I'm sure you'll do the same

I think after the first downgrader there was a new safer one coming out with better support for TA-082. Try to find that one. Im happy that I have an older model without such problems. You always have to look out for what will work if yu have TA-082 or 86 (Its the psp motherboard if people wonder)
I semibricked once during an update from 3.01 OE to 3.03 OE thanks to a bad easy upgrader file.:nag: Hundreds of psp where semibricked before the site took down the file. Thank god Dark Alex have recovery mode.

So wait, could we put crisis core onto the psp in the same way? or do we have to buy that?
I assume more then 1 card works with the PSP. I have 2 256mb cards (for camera) and ive just ordered a 2GB one. Will be ordering a 8Gig when i have more dosh.

You could download a Crisis Core ISO and load it, yeah. When its out and if someone rips it.
I did it with Locoroco once. xD

urh is this right? Ive turned my isos into eboot.pbp and key.bin with PSGUI and alltogether they only add upto 600mb. 200mb per eboot. The key.BIN is online 1kb so.
Enedok
Apr 12 2007, 02:51 PM
That got to be wrong. BTW: with newer popstations and 3.03 OEc + you dont need the Keys.bin file. Try to find an updated popstation.

Around 30-100 MB smaller then your ISO. It depends on the compression level and game type.

Ah okay. Will do. Do you have a link to a guide/tutorial that explains how to downgrade and then install the OE thing?
Inferno187
Apr 12 2007, 07:25 PM
since you have the game originally I just suggest you download the game through bittorrent because most of the time those are made especially to be run on a psp wihtout any difficulties. Try the psp section of mininova.org I've seen alot of torrents for FFVII for psp there.

You guys all REALLY seem to know your stuff about emulating on a PSP. Quick note on legality, Everyone here owns all the games discussed in this thread. There, that should save us :shifty:. Out of interest how does the aspect ration look on PS1 games, I mean are the games squashed or are their black curtains around it?
ozonez
Apr 12 2007, 08:31 PM
The program you use to convert it to EBOOT gives you the option to change the aspect ratio. So i can either choose it to be a square image in the middle or the full screen. it looks fine on a youtube vid i have watched tho. Will give my own opinion when mine arrives.
Btw check my first post, edited so THE BAD PEOPLEZZZ cannot moan.

To downgrade anything below FW 3.03: http://www.psp-hacks.com/forums/about17935.html
I cant seem to find a dedicated howto for TA-082 upgrade for dark alex 3.10 OE-A' Since i dont have a TA-082 motherboard im not used to it. But the way you upgrade to OE is the same with any motherboard. But double check that one. First get 1.50 as a start.
Its a hazzel to get all the way but its darn worth it.
(Kitmitsu: The aspect ratio is original size with black around it, Top and button touch, and stretch to 16:9 fullscreen)

Format it inside the psp system settings. That should do it.
Or format it as FAT in your OS with a card reader

Well the 2GB card i got was bricked. Nothing could format it at all. Ive emailed them. Just downgraded to 1.5, what do i do now?
EDIT:
I followed this guide: http://www.gamerspress.com/index.php?title=3.10_OE-A_Install_Guide
Hope its right. If not im screwed. Anyway got my 2GB card working. Formatting with a 1.5 PSP works for some reason. Even tho ive tried with the computer, a laptop and the 2.71 PSP. Strange.

Weird, 1.5 can format it. :shifty: Sure you don't have a fake MS? I do, and it works like a charm. Good quality on that one.
That guide seems quite straight forward. I'll say go for it. Live on the danger side of life ^-^
(If Im going to scare you a bit more, ill remember something that some few fake MS could have a problem during the flashing. It worked with mine tho. Its a risk you take as it states. It could go wrong and you cant blame it on anybody then yourself)

i have 3.10 OE firmware now btw. Works fine. Just reconverting my isos again. such fun.
Oh also, i put a recent eboot of FF7 disc 1 on there, it loads. White text with a black screen appears. That fades and nothing appears.
EDIT:
Fixed it, realised MagicISO is a rubbish converter. Used UltraISO instead. Works a treat.
EDIT EDIT:
No it doesn't. For each eboot (disc1,disc2 etc) does the Game ID have to be the same. Im getting from the actual game disks and the Game Disk ID changes. So disc 1 is 00565 and disc 2 is 10565 and disc 3 is 20565. Do i keep to this pattern or just use one of those codes? Im testing it now with just the same code.

I know this sounds like a n00bish question. But.... How do you get vids on your PSP ?
ozonez
Apr 19 2007, 07:22 PM
http://www.divx-digest.com/software/3gp_converter.html
download. WHen you convert the vids to MP4 go to the bottom of the list and click on PSP.
When its done, change the name of the file to M4V00001.MP4 or M4V0001.MP4 (I can't remember if its 5 numbers or 4) and put it in PSPDRIVE:\MP_ROOT\100MNV01 and it should work.

Does my PSP have to be a certain firmware?
ozonez
Apr 19 2007, 08:31 PM
I don't really know that. If your PSP has "Video" in the XMB (the menu) as an option then you are at the correct firmware to be able to play videos.
Hitoshura
Apr 19 2007, 08:51 PM
I have the video option on my PSP. But when I stick my PSP into the computer via USB, the video folder doesnt show up. >.>
ozonez
Apr 19 2007, 09:27 PM
Right:
1.) Have you formatted your memory stick using the PSP?
2.) Have you checked if PSPLOCATION:MP_ROOT\100MNV01 if so does it?
3.) What fireware version are you?
Enedok
Apr 19 2007, 09:37 PM
Wait rag, if you have 2.80 FW or up you can just put videos in MS:/VIDEO/
That simple. No need for crazy names. (but it has to be converted right)

Apr 20 2007, 01:53 PM
Heh, with all this talk of formatting going on, don't forget to put your Game Saves on you computer first!
This is a good topic for me, I've hacked the shit out of my PSP. The best program is one that lets you Play MP3s while you're in a game. Since PSP games run at 222mhz, and the cpu is actually 333mhz (sony underclocks it to conserve battery life), the program just uses that spare 111mhz to play MP3s as the game runs smoothly.
I hope Firmware 3.40 is cracked soon because now you can transfer PS1 game saves from you PS3 to your PSP, and all my PS1 gamesaves originated on my PS1 and PS2, so I can just continue any game file I haven't finished yet on my PSP! (I could upgrade and do that, but then I couldn't play non Playstation Store bought PS1 games like FFVII or Gran Turismo 2).

Rag, you can downgrade from 2.71 without Liberty City and install the hacked 3.10 firmware using this guide
http://www.gamerspress.com/index.php?title=3.10_OE-A_Install_Guide
If you follow the guide 100% then theres only a 0.01% chance of your PSP bricking. Mine didn't and it rocks.
Anyways what be that prog that lets u play MP3's in the background?
Kyll
Apr 22 2007, 04:06 AM
I got it from [PSPUpdates.QJ.Net (http://dl.qj.net/2.71-SEB-MP3-module-v0.4f-PSP-Homebrew-Applications/pg/12/fid/12212/catid/140)] (this is a direct link to the program). You just put the "seplugins" folder on the ROOT of your memory stick, and make sure the MP3s you want to listen to in game are in ROOT/PSP/MUSIC, they won't work from ROOT/MUSIC. This works on all OE Firmwares, mines 3.03 OE, works fine, I just always turn off the games own background music first.
Also, the controls all work from the Music Note bottom on your PSP (which is to the left of the start button). So to start you hit [Note+L] change song is [Note + ->] and [Note + <-]. They're more controls in the README.
Oh yeah, you also have to enable the plugin from Recovery Mode (cold start your PSP while hold R until you see a purple screen. Go to plugins and click on both to enable)
