Okay, since you say that you appreciate any suggestions in the forum description, I figured I'd just brainstorm some ideas I have and share them with the public.

Mainly what I want to discuss is the prospect of forum events. Now I've only been here for a couple weeks, or a couple days, or a day, but I noticed that there aren't any fun events going on. Events are great because they help maintain a sense of community and promote more positive interactions between the staff and members than just the typical warning and banning.

At the forums I run, have run, and have been active at, we've had such events as: Member Awards (from obvious to very silly awards)
Staff Campaigns/Elections (members vote for at least lower-ranking staff positions)
Karaoke Contest (members submit performances of songs)
Group Picture (members draw and label themselves on a gigantic MSPaint picture)
Member Interviews (bi-weekly interview to get to know people better)
Forum Mafia (the game that involves deceit in order to survive)I'm sure there are a lot more that I just can't think of right now. The point is, this site has a pretty good group of people and maybe we can augment the community spirit and activity with some events.

What do you guys think? Any events you have in mind?

I love the idea of staff campaigns. :aldo:

Staff campaigns have always been really fun/hilarious when I've done them. With a responsible bunch of members, of course the best people for the job will be elected or reelected, but allowing anyone to run and having campaign speeches and debates is hysterical. If you want to see an example of a staff election, go here: http://fools-gold.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=431 It's an archive, so I don't know if you need to be logged in to view it or not.

As for forum mafia, this site has the system down pretty well: http://www.mafiascum.net/wiki/index.php?title=Newbie_Guide

Oh, I was going to suggest Awards. How would the Awards be recognized by other members? Do they get a special Star or Icon?

Instead of Forum Mafias, I'd choose something else to match this site instead. We should be able to steal Gil from other users. How? Details upon request.

Steal my gil, and I'll hand you your kneecaps. In pieces. Badda-bing, badda-boom.

Bad attempt at humour is bad.

Well, what does he mean by "cooler" than the staff? You've never heard "cool" before? It's quite common in vernacular these days.

On other sites, the award designation is usually handed out as a small image to add to the user's signature. I like the sound of having a medal or ribbon somewhere else, though - perhaps with a rollover text/state that tells you what award the person won.

There will typically be two steps before the actual vote: First is a category thread in which members can suggest whatever categories they want to be voted for. Of course there are some categories that are needed (look at this example for some must-haves: http://forums.ffrepublic.com/event-archives/19285-2003-repubbies-winners.html) Second is the nomination thread, in which members nominate other members for the list of categories that has been accumulated. Finally, the actual vote happens, during which each member fills out the complete list of categories with whatever user they want to vote for, and PMs it to whoever is counting the votes. The nomination stage might seem like a wasted step, but it really helps when counting votes to only have to tally for three names instead of 100, so I advise it.

In fact if you want to get technical, I'm sure it wouldn't he hard to write up a simple voting form in html.

I...hope you're not being serious.

This is actually a pretty good idea, and it'd be fun to see what kind of awards people would get.

Whip and I already discussed the idea of Awards for Special People and Similar.

I'm not sure what's happening with it at the moment.

There should be a HP and Break system, so we can bash other members. Anyone could team up and pile one person. That'd be so awesome! :aldo:

Hey how about a Active Battle System?

:wtf:

Your staff idea will never happen. We choose the staff based on how we feel about them. We remove them if we feel they need to be removed. For the billionth time, this isn't a democracy. :wtf:

:wtf:
Careful, all the new forum users would get piled lol.

Besides that, these ideas sound more like an attempt to transform the site into the forum he linked.

nomad
Nov 13 2009, 10:40 PM
Yeah I've linked to several forums so that makes no sense. Not all of these things happened at the same place or time.

I could just as easily have linked to Square Insider, which has member interviews, Fool's Gold which has forum awards, LastOCP which has staff elections, etc., etc. I bet I'm really going to succeed turning your website into another forum with my suggestions because I'm fuckin' Obi-wan Kenobi.

LastOCP? That forum that thought they were 4chan back in the AdventChildren.net days? :wtf:

nomad
Nov 13 2009, 10:50 PM
What the hell is with AdventChildren.net? Someone on LastOCP just mentioned it yesterday as if it was a big deal, but I don't remember ever doing anything on that site except yawning.

Are you really from ACF? What was your username? Also, do you post at that Lifestream site now?

Neal
Nov 13 2009, 10:52 PM
I can't remember. Furin, probably.

LastOCP used to think they were internet gangsters or something, it was pathetic.

Yeah they sucked. The site is dead now anyway.
