Why do people like ff4 so much?
Okay, so during the summer i downloaded and played final fantasy 4, 5, and 6 on my computer. I was very impressed with six, even tho the graphics were abysmal, but five was absolutely horrible. The story sucked, the main antagonist had no motivation(i will kill everything so that i, too, can cease to exist?), and i felt no attachment to the characters whatsoever. But my biggest disappointment was 4. I was playing the DS remake, so my expectations were VERY high. What i found was 20 hours of uninteresting characters, poorly written story, and an uniteresting world . Cecil and Kain werent as impressive as i expected them to be, and Golbez was essentially Exdeath with a different name. All of the lesser characters were killed off one by one(in the DS version you couldnt even get them back). Battles were repetitve as the only options were attack or use magic. There were no sidequests besides gettin the extra summons and weapons(of which there were hardly any), no extra bosses, no limits breaks, and their was virtually nothing to explore outside of the main quest. Plus, the story was so cliched and unrewarding that i didnt even bother to finish it. I can only imagine what the original was like if this game supposedly had extras. This leads to my question: why are fanboys riding this game's dick so hard? It was an average RPG at best, but by no means(at least in my opinion) groundbreaking. Even six had interesting characters, cool puzzles and dungeons, and a HELL of a lot of exploration. This discouraged me from playing any of the older games in the series since it got worse as i got lower and lower. I would call Final Fantasy 6 and up good RPGs, but five and up are nothing special at all.

I dont like Final Fantasy IV too, gameplay is broken. They could have fixed it in the ds remake but they didnt. When you cast a spell you need to wait a certain ammount of time and spend mp, magics are not that strong that justifys that. Batles are very slow too. Storyline sucks and some characters are anoying. Still, itīs in my opinion the most important final fantasy ever. It rewrite the series.
As for FFV.........I LOVE IT.........story is not bad, itīs perfect in itīs own way. Itīs a perfect cliche rpg saving the world story. There are a lot of funny and sad moments and it doesnt crack your brain.
Gameplay in V is the best in all series. The job system let you costumize and plan strategys like no one final fantasy do (expect tactics, that uses the same system). The level of chalenge is very balanced and itīs a rewarding game. I would call FFV the best classic/tradicional rpg ever made.
I dont need to talk about FF6, of course. Itīs one of the few final fantasys that everyone like althought more than half of the fans never played it.

FFV horrible? First of all, the Job system is easily the most c`lossal feature and probably inspired FFX-2, FFXI and FFXIII as we know it. I was very impressed with it and there were a whole heap of Jobs to test out. You can see that Square has taken it to the next level by allowing you to actualy switch during Battles, but is a lot more dynamic than FFX-2.
The story was cliche and abused that dealt with elemental crystals. Characters weren't that interesting and we knew the same people for the remainder of the game.
I don't feel like chatting about FFVI—Great game is where I'll leave this at. Yes, Golbez and Exdeath remind me of each other.

I edited and took it out because he talked about V and VI but now I realize it was indeed originally about IV.

I played FF IV back when it was out on SNES and I thought that it was an amazing game. I think that if you play the FF series chronologically you will have a very good experience. But if you go from FF X to go play FF IV, if you are not an RPG fan, the experience might be bad.

FFIV was a great game. It had the best cast of characters in my opinion. Edge the awesome ninja, Rydia, the black mage/summoner (who unfortunately drew from child to adult) and Dark Knight Cecil though his whole transformation from Dark Knight to Paladin was very disappointing. Yeah Exdeath might remind you of Golbez, but Golbez is cooler and plus, he's not even really evil. The true villain of the game is Zeromous. And I don't care who I just spoiled the game for. I also love FFIV's clichés.
FFV is a good game too. The characters are funny and that's what makes them lovable. Faris is the best girl in the entire numbered Final Fantasy series. Bartz is too adorable, especially in Dissidia when he has a voice. Him and Firion had the best voices in that game. I also like FFV more than FFVI but I will admit that FFVI is much better than FFV. FFVI deserves a remake much more than FFVII (as long as they don't cast Yukari Fukui as Terra's voice again), but I guess Square Enix care more about the profits they can remake from the game, rather than the value of the game that they're remaking.
Ahh, yes, Emo Panda, Final Fantasy XII is awesome :D :D

I couldn't get into IV, haven't played V, and I agree with you on VI-
even tho the graphics were abysmal
Wat.
VI may not match the likes of Yoshi's Island or Chrono Trigger, but it still looks good.

When you're in business you have to consider a lot of things. Making sure your consumers are happy is one of them, but not to the point where it destroys the company supplying them.
Let's hope SE doesn't get to the point where it takes full effect.

It happens to the best companies. I was hoping that 13 would be the last one, but then SE went and made 14. There is no reason to drag the series out past 15.

I don't know about anyone else, but I found V, IV and VI to be very, very good games. I like them all, although VI tops it for me, V and IV make a tie for second. V's characters were great, the job system was classic and fun, the battle system was crazy-fun and the graphics, well, they weren't that good and it sorta seemed like they down-graded the graphics since IV for V, but graphics doesn't make the game after all.
FFIV was a spectacular game. Most people judge the old FF games because they don't look good, but those people are missing out on great games. :) FFIV's cast of characters was really good, each had a personality, but sadly, we were forced at the end, to have Edge, Rydia, Cecil and Rosa on the team. Not that I have a problem with any of those characters, it just would have been nice to beat the game with others as well ^^
FFVI...I have to say is perfect. I will not lie, I thought it was the best. But, It would stretch the page so far down if I explained why this was awesome game.

I...love you! ^_^ Its not that I don't like VII, but I'd have to agree with you, VI needs a remake before VII or at least, at all. I also agree that they shouldn't cast Yukari Fukui as Terra, because frankly, her voice did not match Terra at all. Terra wasn't that girly >_<
Be friends? :P^_^^_^

So you dont think that when a series is dragged out that the quality of the games may diminish? There may be a point in the not too distant future when that may happen.

I think the game may start being horrible pass 15-16 maybe. Since 14 is coming out already, there is a good chance next year they will work on 15. lol

Some people already say that since VI/VII/VIII/IX/X/X-2/XII that the series is ruined forever, stale and SE must stop making them because of all the poor people that are forced to play them everytime a new one comes out.
Then you get the people who say the exact opposite, though they're a lot rarer. God knows that the fanbase will probably complain more, but that doesn't necassarily mean that the games are worse.

That same fanbase who complains about VI-XII ruining the series are the same ones hating on SE changing. While this may not be true with every fan who hates the past installments, they act like SE makes titles only for them. There are tons of fans to cater to and everyone's taste varies..

Not necessarily, it depends on what a company wants. Mario games have been around a big longer than Final Fantasy yet Galaxy was one of the best and most charming games I've ever played. Nintendo is not going to make a crappy mainline Mario game, intentionally at least. The series has it's misses (Sunshine, Mario 2 USA) but for the most part the games are excellent.
Then you have Activision on the other side, where they find a hit (Tony Hawk, Guitar Hero, more recently Call of Duty) and they milk it for absolutely everything it's worth. The results are obvious, and once customers get tired of the stale franchises, sales slow, and the company moves on to "the next big thing," whatever that may be. Tony Hawk games died ages ago. Guitar Hero peaked with the third game. Let's see how long Call of Duty lasts.
Square Enix seems to take Final Fantasy down a road closer to that of the Mario example. They would rather continue the series' long term success than cheap out and sacrifice quality. At this point at least, that may change in the future, but considering Square Enix is trying to increase their number of successful franchises, that seems unlikely that they would drop one.

The final fantasy games have each been different enough to be called their own game. So long as SE continues to meet or exceed expectations, I have no problem with SE making more FF games. I know you all are like, "They are just here to make money." With the exception of the remakes, which have been pretty shitty (only two high quality cinematics in FF IV WTF:blink:?!!!), I think they have been doing a good job improving upon their previous games.
Back on topic, I played FF IV and was glad I played it. Considering that it was developed longtime back, I wasn't expecting gameplay, cinematics, and storyline of the same scale as some of the later games like FF X and XII. And well, I got exactly that... an old-school game with a short decent story with okay characters:|.
Nevertheless, this thread does raise the question of why a lot of veteran FF gamers prefer the older games over the newer ones. From an objective standpoint, the games after FF VI have been strictly better in almost every way (graphics, story, gameplay, etc) than previous games. I guess nostalgia plays a key role in this "odd" preference. What do you all think? ^_^

Sometimes it can be simple aspects that change such as the Battle system and the World Map. A number of acquaintances have complained about it to me and pretty much loses interest X and beyond.
Another possibility is the plot presented to the players. Many complain about the past installment's plot, pointing out how boring it is. Honestly, it may be a bit harder to become involved with the older FFs than the new ones. A lot of them might just be picky and fuss at Square about Character Designs..

Yeah, definitely the nostalgia factor. FFIV was the first final fantasy and first RPG I played around eight years ago. I remember falling in love with the story and the characters (especially Rydia) and I guess that's why it remains one of my favourites and still bring it out now and then . That been said I wasn't really a fan of FFVI which was the last FF I played (except XI). The "personalities" seemed to be more catchphrases than actual character development.
Edgar: I likes the ladies!
Locke: I'll save you [insert girls name]!
Terra: What is love?
Gau: Oouaoauau!
I really like Celes though.
I spent more time doing the intangir/setzer trick than playing the actual game, maybe it's the dumbed down GBA port's fault, but the gameplay was blase :(
Don't get me wrong I don't think it's terrible, just not what I expected (the end was a real let down for me too). If they ever did a remake and worked more on dialogue it has pontential to be one of my favourites.

cubanboy18- I'll second all you said, actually. It was like I said about FFXIII(and do NOT get me wrong here). "Phenomenal looking game but...its just not FF for me anymore. They might as well change the title and not base it on an overly ongoing series. I'd buy it no matter what".
Well I thought dragging it THIS far was enough, so, that's why I said that. Quality matters, and it'll be a struggle to come up with something new and epic once you've come this far in FF. Everything gets boring after over use. Not that Square-Enix will care, praise to 'em, I'd like to hear of another company with HALF of their annual income.
on topic, most liked FFIV because characters/story wise, it literally was the best til then. Every character had a unique personality, from the goofy anger of Tellah with his immortal quote "you spoony bard!", to the first Cid to join your party, to the mighty Kain the Dragoon, and everyone else who I didn't/deserves a mention. It was medium difficulty at best, considering FFI, I still think was hard, and FFII, the exact opposite due to its cheat status increasing/skill system. FFIV had that awesome...edge(and I don't mean the character, though I DONT take back what I said), where Cecil, a Dark Knight becomes a Paladin. from Yin to Yang...that's what FFIV was all about.

FFIV was the first FF game that i fell in love with and played it thru many, many times. The characters were intriguing, the twists (I really like the whole bad guy going good), the plot development was awesome. Although I'm not a big fan of some nameless (zeromus) faceless guy that you've never heard of being the big bad boss at the end. Watching Cecil turn to a paladin, getting to know Palom and Porum and watching them being turned to stone to save you, watching the old guy finally get his revenge by casting Meteo and dying in the effort.
I could go on and on. Occasionally I still start up the old emulator and play it thru, just for a few chuckles.
IMO still in my top 3 FF games ever. But hey, what do I know, I liked FF8 better than FF7 :)
EDIT: But yes, I always hated the "Spoony Bard" LOL.

I've always been partial to VI, and IV myself. I loved Terra to death, and Kefka is my favorite villain of all time, the way Kefka slowly progressed throughout the game made you know and hate him... by the time you reached him you hated him for everything and wanted him dead. I do like VII, VIII as well... but so far
VI is my fav
IV, X and XIII are tied for second favorite
With VII, VII and IX in the third tier.
BTW don't feel bad I prefer VIII to VII as well.

Liked FFIV for the character Kain to be honest. Thought that his story of jealously envy and loosing his identity to evil was interesting and mind provoking not to mention thought that he was rather sexy even though he's just a game sprite. Also loved FFIV for it's music espically the Battle of the Four Fiends or the Dreadful battle tune.
Final Fantasy V is actually a great game too. Fairs is a awesome Final Fantasy character and the battle system is well developed. Ex- Death is the only FF villain that can send shiver down my spine with his creepy music and his dungeons that can remind you of hell. Plus what he tried to do to Galuf's granddaughter and Bartz later on in the game is just plain awful, the storyline brings comedy and sorrow which is what makes it amazing.
Final Fantasy VI actually hated it at first. Felt like there was too many characters to choose from which made leveling up frustrating and annoying and the dungeons are annoying and frustrating as heck. Phoenix Cave for example. But have learnt to love VI though it took a while.
But yeah, love FF IV for Kain. His personality is just rather well, sexy.
