The Final Fantasy title being worked on at GRIN before the studio collapsed is still in development by publisher Square Enix, GamesIndustry.biz understands.
Sources close to both parties have revealed that the game, initially signed off in Tokyo in the second half of last year and codenamed Fortress, was central to the collapse of the Swedish developer – Square took the project off GRIN after only six months of development due to concerns over quality issues.
Because business law in Sweden prohibits companies from going into debt without severe penalties, the developer was subsequently unable to bear its wage burden without new projects, and so closed its doors.
GRIN had previously worked with Square Enix' fellow Japan-based publisher Capcom on a new instalment in the Bionic Commando franchise, and while critical reception and sales numbers were relatively modest, GamesIndustry.biz has been told that the Japanese firm was pleased with the results.
But in the end the size of the developer's staff base meant that continuing indefinitely without concrete deals in the pipeline was impossible, and the company announced (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/grin-confirms-company-closure) in August this year that is was shutting down due to an "unbearable cashflow situation".
As well as Bionic Commando, the studio released two other titles earlier this year – Wanted: Weapons on Fate and Terminator: Salvation – both of which scored poorly in the specialist press.

So there you have it.

***I should add that the rumored title is an FFXII game, or at the very least an Ivalice Alliance game.

Here's hoping for something similar to FFT. The handheld versions are kinda shitty, so I really want a decent home console version, or something similar ;D

Well, good to know there's still an opportunity for this game to be released.

Agreed, the handheld titles were nice but I like the feeling that full 3D gives to Ivalice. If this is true then it's great news to me at least.

Final Fantasy Fortress XIII?
From the bad artwork I would say it's an mmorpg.

With FFXIV already in development I doubt they'd add a second FF MMO to their current gen roster.if they do they'd end up with split loyalties and each game probably only making half of its potential earnings. Unless one of them happens to end up being free to play =D

I agree, its stupid to have 2 MMORPG titles in market from SE. that chocobo pic has both FF12 and FF14 themes but I will be delightful to have PS3 game based on Ivalice, Ivalice is the best FF world IMO is has great potentioal for mythical stories

That artwork makes evident the reasons why SE pulled the project from that team. Quality concerns indeed.

Yeah, the fact that Square saw what they were doing and then took the project away from them makes me think that this game might just look a little bit (understatement?) different if and when it comes out. But who knows maybe this isn't an example of the "quality" concerns they were having?

If those pieces of artwork aren't a cause for concern, I don't know what could be. It's been typical of western development teams to create completely unimaginative fantasy worlds this gen. I haven't yet seen an interesting fantasy world developed by a western team this gen, including the childishly designed world of Oblivion, whose inspirations seemed to derive from the budget section at Toys R Us, which was an otherwise brilliant game.

Nice nice..I thought it was squashed permanently. I love the development photos taken when they announced their closure.
