View Full Version : The "Final Fantasy Player" — why the Hell hasn't Square Enix made this yet?

Given the enormous popularity and good sales of Final Fantasy games, I'm surprised Square Enix hasn't yet churned out another cash cow to make a quick buck. They should get together with a manufacturer and create their own mini video game handheld console, similar to WonderSwan, but for Final Fantasy. It would be dedicated to Final Fantasy, and would play no other games or third party games.
I am thinking they should call it the "Final Fantasy Player" and have the following games built in, i.e. no cartridges or discs required. It would be a machine dedicated solely to playing Final Fantasy games:
• FFI & II: Dawn Of Souls (GBA version)
• FF3 (original, NES version) emulated and translated to English, or using one of the English ROM patches that already exist (simulation shown below).
• FF4 (GBA version)
• FF5 (GBA version)
• FF6 (GBA version)
All together, the above games would probably be less than 25 MB and stored on the flash memory of the player itself, with a bit more memory for internal saving. And since it wouldn't play the 3D remakes of FF3 or FF4 for the DS, you wouldn't need advanced graphics capabilities like the DS.

I guarantee you such a device would be gobbled up by the Japanese who are Final Fantasy fanatics. I myself would be willing to pay up to $30 - $40 to buy a device like this which had FF1 through FF6 on it, for nostalgic purposes, even though I already own the respective GBA and DS versions.

I would buy it too and it would be an awesome idea, specially for those new FF gamers that don't know the older games.
Yet SE thinks you get a lot of money making a port of a port of a port of a port (FFI).

I wouldn't buy it because all the games you listed can easily be downloaded for pc and played on it using emulators. So they wouldn't get my cash.

Square would never make a product like this, they have to keep rehashing/re-releasing everything to get more cash

YES, PLEASE! *O* Emulators just DON'T work for me (or work and somehow crash someday... -n), then this idea is like.... PERFECT! *O* And FF6...

why stop there? they could make a device that could play ff 1-9 if they wanted to
Wouldn't that be more expensive to manafactuer than just re-releasing the games? And since when has SE created hardware anyway? They're a software company.
I'm just hoping for 3, 4, 5 and 6 in HD sprites for PSP (like 1 and 2). They're the best versions of the games we'll get I think.

Interesting thought, but I really can't imagine this happening. Mainly because SE knows that not everybody enjoys every Final Fantasy and that only the most die hard fans would buy it. I think the closest thing to that that might happen is that they make all the games (I-IX) available on PSN to be played on the PSP or PS3. That would be a better choice in my opinion.

As would I. And I know Tactics is set to come out soon, but I've heard nothing else on the other games.

You could sort of make one yourself.
Get a GBA Micro (same form factor as the picture you posted) and put ROMs for each game onto a GBA flash cart.
Only "sort of" since since FFIII has no GBA release. Would take some modding to get that working.

I recall reading about Squaresoft being interested in making their own console back in the day after Sony was successfully able to enter the console market. Never happened though, obviously. Probably would have been a Spirits Within-caliber failure.
I know there was that thing about a Capcom console as well, but I don't know if it was something that was done as a joke or if they actually considered it.

they'd probably make more money making games for the existing handhelds, and I wouldnt want to start walking around with my PSP or DS and another thingy for just some FF games, having the games on one handheld sounds alot better! having PSP and DS is enough as it is people
