View Full Version : Improvements to the series

So i created this account maybe an hour ago...I've been searching the forum to see if anyone has had any similar thoughts, but my attention span and patience can only go so far.
My question is, besides the improved graphics, the awesome cinematics, and hair dynamics, i can't really see what makes Final Fantasy XIII and Versus so special. Don't get me wrong, I'm planning on getting the game as soon as it comes out, but honestly I have the feeling that Final Fantasy's are just the same games with revamped graphics, different characters, and slightly altered storyline. I like to buy a game for the gameplay, i don't have a lot of money so I can't by 20 different games a month, heck not even in a systems life span (i had like 10 ps2 games before I got a ps3).
I've been eyeing Uncharted two for a long time now, it's a game that's really trying to use the ps3's power to enrich the gameplay experience. It may be another Indiana Jones, but they make it seem like something new. When i look at Square-Enix games however, it's just another RPG for their undying Japanese fans who don't seem to care more for the game but more for how effeminate they can make their male characters look.
maybe it's just me, but I'm wondering if anyone else feels this way, like Square isn't trying with their games anymore. How many can actually bet Final Fantasy XIII or Versus XIII would actually play different on the ps2? I still have hope for Versus though, since it's being worked on by Nomura (what? he's awesome0 and he plans on giving it a darker (and hopefully not cliché) story.
oh and yes, i know they're called role-playing games, and that's how they work. but in FF you aren't playing a "role" your pressing the [X] button until the movie is over.

tell me, how could we possibly fucking know what makes this game special when we haven't seen any gameplay???
we cannot answer this only based in what we've seen in CG trailers

i guess i shouldn't have posted in the Versus thread since it's about both games, but i like Versus better. Anyway, you can look at XIII it's the ATB system again. nothing special. And i'm quite tired of seeing cg trailers and no gameplay. What company doesn't show gameplay for a game that's been known about for a while now?

I haven't played that many of them, so maybe I'm just being ignorant, but don't pretty much all shooters conform to the same shoot stuff, heal sometimes, hide sometimes formula? No one ever complains about that.
Oh, and while whether it was an improvement or not is debatable, most agree that XII was different.

Shooters have no plot and give me headaches. I hate the vast majority of them. I never defended shooters. I do complain about them, but this is a Final Fantasy forum. So i have no reason to complain about them here.

You complain about effeminate looking characters and then say you like Versus more when Versus is full of ladyboys and XIII has Sazh and Snow? :wtf:
This game is being made by the X team and Kitase, who always explore interesting themes in the FF's he/they create. Yes it's going to be flawed (all Final Fantasy's are in some way or another) but I'm interested to see what they do regarding themes of immigration and nationhood (which they talked about in real early interviews).
And the gameplay *looks* fun (I can's say for sure not having played it), but the Xenogears/Star Ocean 2-ish style definalty appeals.

i just need to clarify something here: Anyway, you can look at XIII it's the ATB system again. nothing special.
this is actually the first time in the main ff series in which one could pull off combo attacks regularly, and use magic spells without the use of MP. you can even launch enemies in the air like nothing. And i'm quite tired of seeing cg trailers and no gameplay. What company doesn't show gameplay for a game that's been known about for a while now?have you been under a rock? we got demo videos of how gameplay goes on and we got a look at (magazine but who cares) gestalt mode with snow and the shiva sisters.

I am interested in this game because I lvoe the variation within Japanese game design.
Sure the stories are often ridiculous, which is a shame. But the same can be said for Western games.
I think the problem here is that developers WANT to tr to be creative and make new things happen, but when you're gambling in a niche genre, with $20mil, you want to play it as safe as possible. Well, the creatives don't, but the producers most certainly do.

Where do I start? First of all if you would actually WATCH the trailers, there is plenty of gameplay in them. Second if you would actually bother to PLAY the demo that out right now, you would see it is completly different from previous FF battle systems. The new system moves very fast, you control one character (most likley be gambit system for the others), and you will level up according to your preformace in each battle (as apposed to the usual EXP point system). Most importantly, there was absolutley nothing special about Uncharted. And from watching the stage demo of Uncharted 2 at E3, its obviously more of the same thing with a different background.

i'm guessing that you don't really know much about ff games.

As far as I'm concerned, the gameplay in FFXIII looks fast and stylish but is not that innovative.
I'm waiting to see the next version of ADB by the FFXII team.

Point blank period right there. Versus looks more weenie-ish to me.
