Sphinxaur...WTF?

When you reach Ultimecia's Castle, all your command powers are sealed off by her eight monsters, whom you have to fight in a basically crippled state in order to get back your powers and abilities. As you defeat them and get back your powers one by one, you become gradually less crippled.

When you first enter the castle, all your commands are sealed and the only thing you can do in battle is Attack. The very first guardian that you fight is Sphinxaur on the stairs. And I believe he is the mandatory first one too, you have to fight him first.

I understand they would want to make the battle extremely easy because you're really crippled at that point and it would be very cheap for you to lose, but....

Seriously, WTF?

Sphinxaur just stands there and literally does nothing, waiting for you to frag him? Has anyone ever fought him and just did nothing yourself and waited to see what he does? Does he do anything in that battle?

If he doesn't act at all in battle, that is a waste of 3D model and programming. He has a unique 3D model. Some game designer spent what, days creating his model, and the game planner's like, yeah we're just going to have him stand there and do nothing and get fragged so Squall and Co. can get back one more command and be less crippled and less cheap.

For all you know, they made the model anyway, never found a use for it and then spent less time then you spent writing that post, deciding to just stick him as the madatory first fight to get an ability back. Point is, we just don't know.
