View Full Version : Why is the hate on JRPGs so strong this gen?

I can understand people wanting the gameplay to evolve but the attacks on anything else is just bitchin' IMO.
Take this quote from the start of 360 Magazines E3 09 FFXIII preview:
"Although we're happy that WRPGs are selling more than all that shemale Japanese crap"
And at the end:
"So prepare your 360 for the best JRPG this gen. Also, prepare your mind for the possibility of Lightning having a penis and Snow being a fag. We've warned you."
WTF? Some of this JRPG hate is going too far. :(
You're not Here

^ people are idiots once confidence gets in their heads for a while.
Trust me, I know :)
Plus, Snow being a fag would so totally be hot, as well as a shemale Lightning.
Imagina all the possibilities!

Probably because JRPGs this gen have been largely shit.
Also, looking at Faize from SO4 and Yuri from ToV, I had to be told that they were male. :wtf:

I still remember their shocking last paragraph in their 6.5 review of S04 back two issues ago:
"The battle system is fun but is the same as any other JRPG. Still, the lead is a chick with a dick, the female partner has the face of a 2 year old and the voice acting in the whole game is terrible! Thanks for the 360 support Square Enix but send this shit over to Sony, 360 gamers don't play games like this."

It's a UK Magazine. They're quoted from memory as I just read video game magazines in the shops and steal the demo discs.

I'm suprised that people keep giving JRPGs crap for having similar battle systems when there is acctually NO difference in any FPS battle systems, every single one of them is point and shoot. WTF?

Exactly. It comes off like they're against JRPGs for personal reasons.

I'm with Shuyu. Alot of them have been crap lately. Hopefully, FFXIII and FFvIII can bring JRPGs back into the mainstream. Most complete Xbots don't have enough patience to actually complete a JRPG and only care for games that are shooters. At least JRPGs have more potential to evolve in gameplay better rather than just upgrading graphics (i.e. most shooters).

It's GOOD that the WRPGs are outselling the JRPGs this gen, otherwise the JRPG developers would think that the shit they're doing is all right, when it's really not.

Way to be a jack ass. I hate it when people openly insult places just because they don't like them for some fucking reason.
Aside from that, yes JRPGS have pretty much failed so far with the current consoles, the only one that I have played and liked is Valkryia Chronicles.

The only good RPGs I've played this gen are Disgaea 3, Valkyria Chronicles and soon to be Demon's Souls. A majority of the RPGs being released are on the 360, yes, but more doesnt mean better. I didnt care for Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey was good but not THAT good, Tales of Vesparia I havent played yet but I most likely will once it's released on PS3, Star Ocean was lame (sorry but to me it was), don't even get me started on Infinited Undiscovery.
Come on ATLUS and NIS we need of your RPG love.

there are some JRPG i really enjoyed in this gen. but still the big JRPG buster isnt here and i dont think FF13 is going to help much in these rather poor JRPG gen.
i was excited about every Xbox JRPG but in the end most of em were crap. im expecting more from Sony and some of their 3. party developer.
Meh you, I'm loving the RPGs this gen, Valkyria Chronicles, Demon's Souls, Persona 4 [PS2, i know], Folklore. Eternal Sonata's pretty solid too. Plus there's a lot lot lot more to come.

I loved Oblivion, but it looks like the developers went to Toys R Us to do its prep work on the art aspects. Everything is so unimaginative in it...
But I resent this notion of the perceived innovation of WRPG's... The best one this gen, Fallout 3, has a combat system based around a concept that was created in a Playstation One JRPG(Vagrant Story). I don't really define FF in terms of regions though... ff IS rpg's as far as i'm concerned.

Folklore is way more like a hack and slash kidn of game. I LOVE the sixaxis in it. Seriously I LOVE it.
But I am up on JRPG's, I wasn't last generation. I think it's because I want what I can't get xD
But I see all the cool Japanese designs on DS and I just think. Holy shit, I want devs to be that daring on the PS3 (or 360). Like I want Persona on PS3 and TWEWY, and stuff.
And FFXIII to be honest looks way too floral for me. So yeah, Versus looks awesome as does End of Eternity.

It might be a little bit, but let's not forget it does have a pretty immersive story and a brilliant soundtrack, the gameplay was a bit of a pain to me, but it was worth it :]
Like I want Persona on PS3
Mmm, that would be the day.

It's not hate for the genre, it's hate for the bullshit effortless crap games like The Last Remnant.

Jul 16 2009, 12:36 AM
To be honest I loved the gameplay in Folklore, but I was NEVER saying it was a bad game. Just that I don't know if I'd call it an RPG. I guess it was kind of. Like an ARPG.
@Neal I have a feeling that the JRPG market has always been so divisive individually - even on it's home turf, that the development costs this generation of any Triple A game, stifles any of those Japanese nuances.
Japanese developers are given such stick for being 'lazy' or 'rubbish' this generation, which is so unfair. People seem to forget, their expertise is to create game for their market, and their market is a lot smaller than the US. So the budget is smaller. And if you try to create a JRPG this generation, the budget it going to be massive regardless of it being a Triple A, or just an A quality title.
That's why Capcom and SEGA have less problems. They have titles outside of Japan. It means they can invest in Japanese experience, that might not create revenue - they can rely on the West for that.
Neal
Jul 16 2009, 12:43 AM
No it's not unfair. Have you played The Last Remnant? It's obvious that they rushed it out the door to make some quick money. The technical problems are horrible, frame rate drops are a problem in a lot of games, but every single fight without fail is just unacceptable, it's lazy as fuck of them to release it in that kind of condition. I don't imagine that budget isn't a thing Square has a problem with, either.

No, I should have specififed I was talking about JRPG's in general. I have not played TLR.
But I reckon it doesn't help they used the UE3 engine, the tools of which are virtually all in English, or are buzz word terms which are difficult to translate.
I do think in general it's unfair, purely becuase people remember stuff like TLR, and they generalise about Japan, as opposed to realising it's really Square Enix who aren't doing very well. ANd Square haven't had one massive title this generation yet, have they? Or do they own DragonQuest?

Jul 16 2009, 02:11 AM
Meh, I think it will be Versus XIII that has the innovative gameplay that will lay the smackdown on WRPGs this gen.
FFXIII looks great but the gameplay is not as innovative as FFXII, IMO.

Jul 16 2009, 02:17 AM
FFXII's gameplay was fucking crap. What kind of a game lets you set it up so you never have to play it? You just run up to an enemy and put the controller down.

You could have played the game without gambits or at least them off for your party leader; it would have felt more like KH that way.
To each his own but gameplay in FFXII was not crap. You just didn't manipulate it into a form you'd enjoy.

Alot of RPGs this gen are getting western. Mostly SE games. That's why I'm keeping my money on Demon's Souls, VC and Disgaea. Devil Survivor is really good to, also not sure if you can include Persona 4 in this conversation, I mean it's not 'current gen' perse but it did come out last December and that's a wonderfully awesome game as are all SMT games. Yeah suck it SE.
On a side note, Folklore/Folksoul was pretty fun but it got very repetitive after awhile.

KH didn't necessitate scrolling for hours just to select a spell, either. Gambits were bad. Without gambits was just downright inconvenient.

^ As I said, each to their own regarding XII. I liked it and found ADB and gambits flexible and fun.

Gonna agree with everyone else on that note... you can do the last boss without even touching your controller.. yaaaaaaayyyyy.... -.-'

Indeed, I mentioned it was for the PS2. Man, how amazing this game is, all of you please get it while it's hot.

Yeah, but even with the gambits off how annoying that was.

Oh, shut the fuck up. No one cares what you think, especially when you start saying FFXII's battle system is like Kingdom Hearts. That just makes you look like an idiot that has read a description on wikipedia and never actually played either games.

I really liked Final Fantasy XII.
Anyway, I think part of the problem with JRPGs this gen in that around 85% of them suck. Also, a lot of them look very Japanese and come off as weird to the west.
Take Star Ocean 4 for example, how many Americans do you think would want to play with characters that look like this?
http://videogamerx.gamedonga.co.kr/zbxe/files/attach/images/699943/066/922/01.jpg
I think that more JRPGs should shoot for the "universal" appeal of games like Final Fantasy.

I wouldn't because Edge looks like my 10 year old cousin, who's a great kid, but doesn't exactly inspire feelings of "OMG I CAN SAVE TEH WARLD" in any particular manner. Reimi looks like my other cousin. The 20 month old one. Only more female.

The same mass of Americans that like tripe like Naruto and Code Gess or whatever it's called?
I don't think it's the design which is the core problem here, more like the games themselves just must really suck a lot, as you've already mentioned. JRPGs to my knowledge always had their more "Japanesey" designs, which depending on how generic the design, is a little off putting for me sometimes.
But I do agree about the more "universal" appeal, I wish more would opt for that route.

well, i dont see any more hate for jrpgs this generation than in last (well.. maybe a little), there are always whiny bitches with problem with culture differences. Sad thing they sometimes get job in media so their opinion influence people who listen to them.
but yeah sometimes its pathetic to read like they punish every new jrpg game for being the same like others in genre and at the same time glorify every new shooter game, they are all the same too you stupid hypocrites -___- (and i would be kind enough not to mention scores of every next Fifa, NHL and Madden)
and this is one of the reasons why i listen more to Famitsu scores in case of japanese games, western press is sometimes just biased and unfair :wtf:
But I do agree about the more "universal" appeal, I wish more would opt for that route.
universal? i think playing as pretty boys and girls in fancy clothes is all the way fair if at the other hand America feel free to provide us with ugly steroid characters like Marcus Fenix

And at the end:
"So prepare your 360 for the best JRPG this gen. Also, prepare your mind for the possibility of Lightning having a penis and Snow being a fag. We've warned you."
that quotes looks like they were from very very cheap tabloid, not a game magazine... :wtf:
and they are lies btw. which wrpg sold better than FFVII or even FFVIII or FFX
on the side note: Infinite Undiscovery is a good game, not spectacular or anything but certainly playable, and im sick of hearing how big crap it is from people who only looked at metacritic -_-
on the other side note: its a pity Square screw up with Last Remnant, if only it hadnt tons of bug it would be considered good, but i think its not just thay they were in hurry to finish it fast, japanese just have problem with using Unreal (and i hate that engine anyway...)
on the third side note: anyone who really mistook Edge for a girl is either half-blind or retarded
Sundance Kid
Jul 21 2009, 05:50 AM
Yes seriously NIS, is that a problem?
Donflamingo
Jul 21 2009, 11:43 AM
Well, in defense of FF XII, 80% of prolly just rushed to finish the game, if you had played all the side quests etc., you would've learned that gambits don't allow you to put the controller down, hell, chances are you won't take down 10% of its hp with your controller down.
Aaaaaaanyway, onto the main topic. Personally, I like most... well some JRPG's but its true they're all based on the exactly same thing. Cute girls, big breastesses (lol, not a typo?! ), "handsome" guys, fancy hairstyles and the main story is ALWAYS about the girl in trouble, noone dies and the world gets saved from bullshit. What really pisses me off are the characters, all that fanciness.... c'mon peeps, that's wishful thinkin' , "fan" service ain't makin' anythin' popular, its 2D ffs!

It seems that way . But Nintendo DS has been getting some good JRPG's.

Man, JRPGs were beating the living shit out of WRPGs during the PSone and PS2 era. Those were great times and the days I first got interested in Lolicon and Visual Kei.
Man, JRPGs need to step up their gameplay and not let WRPGs win this gen. I need cute girls in my games and WRPGs do not satisfy my paedo needs.
