I've played 1-4 of the pre-3D titles in the FF series. What I'm wondering is if I'll miss out on any of the retro in-jokes that I've heard are a strong part of FF9 if I haven't played 5 and 6 yet.

Access denied. :wtf:

FF don't have anything to do with each other.

The only reference is the BLK magic, and WHT and Summons, and Weapons, and Moogles, and chocobos, and airships, and androgynous main characters= and CID!

Oh, and there is a reference to Cloud's sword in Limdblum.

Yah, I get that they don't continue the story. Nostalgia, meaning that certain elements of the game remind the player of past games.
I kinda wonder if Cid'll be in 13. SPOILER:Seeing as Balthier killed him in 12, haha.
Thanks for the answer. Looks like I won't have to wait to play my next new FF.

yeah, there are no direct relationships in these games. the only things that are familiar are terms like cardin said, but some of the terms mentioned are never supposed to connect the main series games together

That was great! Just read it. The only references that I thought were particularly interesting were the Cloud weapon reference, the odd Cloud/Squall name reference, the Resident Evil reference, and the best of the bunch being the FF2 story reference. Everything else was just names being borrowed for the most part, whether they be places, items, weapons, spells or characters. The name borrowing is an equally strong element in every FF imo.

There are small references to every final fantasy but in my opinion the ones which have more impact in FFIX is Final Fantasy I and Final Fantay VII.

There's a shirtless guy outside a weapon shop whose name is Ashley. :awesome: Hearkens back to Vagrant Story. Not FF but yeah.

I just finished it last night. There may be more homages than other ff's; but imo the game is much more than an amalgamation of previous ff's. It was very much it's own game, and a pretty awesome one at that! 8 is still my first ff, and as a result my fave of the Playstation bunch. 9 probably beats 7 for me on the FF totem pole.

Couldn't have said it any better. FF9 was my first, so I really enjoyed its features and spending countless hours on it. In XII, I've spent quite a long time, but FF9 comes in second so far. This game does beat 7, but certainly not 6 for me.

I began to play Final Fantasy IX some months ago and last month i tryed to beat Necron. I never touched the game after i see how hard Necron is. I never had problems with the other boss, too bad i fell completly dismotivated to beat him. Graphics and story are good in FFIX but gameplay is awfull.

Beat him too many times. What level were you?

In most FF Games, you won't be ready to take on the last boss by doing the straightforward process in the game. You have to take part in some side-quests and grind on your own time.

dont get me wrong, i love hard games, too me chalenge is almost everything in a videogame. Problem is that i hate ff9īs gameplay. Its just to dam slow and i get trought all the game without grinding propostly, in boss batles i just healed and atacked and no boss till now was an headache so i was no exepcting such a badass thing like necron. I never cared about sidequests or to get the best armours, magics and all that stuff, i m playing without a waltrought.
The story got so intense in the end that i just want to beatNecron the quickest possible too see the end and i dont want to grind neither complete sidequests because like i said i really hate ff9īs gameplay ( even outside batles).

Still, any advice to kill Necron?

Soory the off topic post.

Death to Necron!!!!

Yeah, you won't get a good response without obtaining some decent upgrades and HP. I made sure that everyone I was going to use in the party was at least 65. I believe the furthest I went was about 77. Most people probably don't want to level up because the battle system's action.

In XII, it's much easier though to get a 99 and more action involved. I would pay more attention to the armour and weapons because they actually make a difference especially when you're beginning. The first few times in FF, I use to ignore the weapons and armour with the result of me failing to get passed the crucial parts.

not final fantasy, but in Xenogears at the starting village, Lucca from Chrono Trigger is there to explain to you how save points work.

Which FFs does it hearken back to?

The good ones.

Now I say we let this thread die again.
