This is a very serious question.
My cousin is an extreme hypochondriac. He worries about CANCER every moment of the day!

I wanted to know what cancers he should worry about, and which not to! :(

So, for all you health smart people: Tell me please!
He is 18 years old btw! The only cancer I can think of that he might get is Skin Cancer

He is for realz worried about prostate at his age.

Rather than enabling him by telling him which ones he should worry about, if he really has a problem to the extent that it affects the quality of his life, you should recommend he seek out counseling services. If he is enrolled in public school or a university, they are probably available at no/low cost.

Tell him that worrying about cancer causes brain cancer. He'll either stop worrying or explode, either way your problem is solved.

People on the internet: Collectively, they hold as much value as a doctor.

I totally understand what you mean. But, this guy seriously worries about Pancreas, lung, brain, liver cancer, etc...

I'm just trying to tell him of the cancers that just don't happen at his age. He is very healthy and doesn't smoke. Works out, and is lean.

Do you have any ideas of which one's are most like just exclusive to 40+ age?

My point is that if you're talking to him about it, you're making the problem worse. The reason most hypochondriacs are hypochondriacs is because of the socially mediated factor, meaning the attention they get from others. You may think your talking to him about it is only alleviating his fears, thus making him less likely to talk about his fears of cancer in the future, but in reality, you will most likely make the problem worse because you will have established yourself as a source of reinforcement for your cousin's behavior of talking about his fears of cancer. He'll just be MORE likely to talk to you about his fears of cancer in the future because in the past, when he has talked to you about his fears of cancer, this has produced conversation about his fears about cancer. If you really want him to stop verbally declaring his fears of cancer, just ignore him. It won't stop him from seeking out other people who will listen to him rant about it, but at least he will stop bothering you.

Cancer is not bounded by age or health. You can be the healthiest person in the world and just get dealt a shit hand and end up with cancer. Don't tell him he can't get cancer for whatever reason, because he can.

True, and for the record, my cousin died of metastasized prostate cancer at age 24.

WOW. I'm very sorrry! It's just hard to believe that he got it at age 24 especially prostate.

people 40+ get prostate cancer- like 97%.

97% of people over the age of 40 get prostate cancer? EVEN THE WOMEN?

He "got it" (was diagnosed) at 23. He didn't die until he was 24.

I'm a slight hypochondriac so I can relate. Both times I thought I may have cancer has been a false alarm, weird headaches equaling sinus crap and one of my balls going mad just because it got damaged somehow (though the doctor did tell me it was cancer then left me in a room for an hour terrified until he came back and was like 'LULZSORRY I was wrong'). :wtf:

If you're worried go to the doctor, but it's usually some other crap. There's not much point asking those around you incessantly though (unless they happen to be a doctor).

Well, thanks all of you guys! I guess I can just hope for the best for him. I'll make him go to a psychaitrist.

Don't make him do anything. Don't even suggest anything. You'll probably make matters worse by doing so. Either agree with him or ignore him.

Ignoring is the best you can do.

Tell him he's more at risk of getting run over in a traffic accident, or tell him that the reason they ask you to put your heads between your knees in the event of an aircraft crash was so that your neck would snap instantly and avoid a painful death... I always enjoy poking hypochondriacs.

In all seriousness though the ONLY way you can help him is by doing what some of the others have suggested and getting him help, what kind of quality of life can somebody expect if they're always worried all day long...
