Who does Cloud truly love? (Aerith or Tifa)

I think its Tifa because all of the fatcs when you put it together, Tifa is the obvious choice. Here are reasons:

1. Cloud joined SOLDIER to impress her.
2. He kepy his promise to her that he would help her in need.
3. In the Lifestream we found who the real Cloud was and who he cared for.
4. The Higwind scene near at the end of disc 2 (not going into detail)
5. in "Case of Tifa" novel Cloud says he's happy he's with her and wants to live a normal life with her. In other words, a family.
6. In the Reunion Files of Advent Children, Nomura and Nojima called Tifa a "koibito" which in Japanese, means a lover/sweetheart. Why would they give her that name for no apparent reason?

Also in the Reunion Files, Nomura said that Cloud speaks with his eyes. And that can be proved in these pics.

He might've for a time, began developing feelings for Aeris when they were together. But after she died, there isn't much more that can be done. It's sort of unhealthy for any person to continue falling in love with someone who's already passed away.

So while Cloud and Aeris might've had a future before, seeing as Cloud now has/wants to focus on just living and moving on, not to mention how Denzel and Marlene now look up to him as some sort of father figure--along with Tifa as the motherly figure--it seems far more likely that Cloud could end up with Tifa in the distant future. They're childhood friends, they meet eye to eye on many things, so it's an affinity that could go well later on.

I used to totally be an AerithxCloud fan. I think it was because I played Kingdom Hearts before Final Fantasy VII. I despise Tifa with everything I own but I think I've grown on to the fact that Tifa and Cloud are a good pair. Aerith loved/loves Zack in the first place. And true both she and Zack are dead.

I would say that in disc 1 he didn't knew about what happened in his past, so the way you have to say it like this: that after Sephiroth killed Aerith Cloud wanted revenge, because he couldn't get Aerith back sorry >_< not even if Cloud defeated Sephiroth he would have been able to get her back.

Couldn't that be a mis-translation just like you said "I think I can meet her....there?" was? :lol:. In any case the movie ends with acceptance that Aeris isn't coming back and to move on. Him and Tifa becoming more than friendly afterwards is more than possible.

Now over to The Case of Tifa which I've been checking out.

The sin held a role deep in Tifa's heart.

She wondered if she could live on with those feelings. Tifa was afraid of her future. She looked down from the sky towards the ground.

Meanwhile, Cloud was sitting next to her gazing at the same scenery but was smiling peacefully. It was a smile that she hadn't seen before during their journey. Cloud noticed her gaze and asked, "What's wrong?"

"Cloud, you're smiling."

"I am?"

"Yeah."

"Everything starts now. A new..." Cloud looked for the right words, "A new life."

"I'm going to live. I think that's the only way I can be forgiven. We've been through... all sorts of things."

"I guess you're right..."

"But when I think about how many times I've thought about starting a new life, it's funny."

"Why?"

"I've always failed to do it."

"That's not funny."

"...I think it will be all right this time."

Cloud became very quiet for a moment. Then he said, "Because you're with me."

"That's how it will be starting from tomorrow," Cloud replied smiling again.Granted I haven't been reading it to closely but is he saying he wants to begin a new life with Tifa? I mean he is talking about Tifa isn't he? I keep thinking he's going off into his thoughts like in Advent Children but then again she can't reply to a thought though :P.

Okay another question which isn't really about who he loves but more about him moving on. Surely Advent Children was a happy ending, Aeris went off with Zack and all was well whether or not him and Tifa get together. Who would want to spoil such a perfect ending? He may have loved her or he may just have wanted to have been forgiven by her in Advent Children but surely that's over now because of the two major points, one being Cloud's admitted he's going to move on and two she's dead.

Actually, no, he doesn't. Here is the exact scene from the novella:

But right next to her, Cloud was watching the same scene [the ruins of Midgar] and smiling serenely. That smile was nothing she'd ever seen during their travels. Cloud noticed Tifa was gazing at him.

"What?"

"Cloud, you're smiling."

"I am?"

"Yes."

"This is where it starts. My new--" Cloud paused, searching for the words. "My new life," he finished. "I'm going to live. I'll never be forgiven unless I do. So much has... has happened."

"It sure has."

"But I thought it was funny, considering all the other times I thought my 'new life' was starting."

"Why is that funny?"

"'Cause I always screwed it up."

"That's not funny."

"This time... I think I'll be okay."

Cloud was silent for a long time before he spoke again. "Because I have you."

"You've always had me."

"I mean from tomorrow on." Cloud answered with another smile.

Now, please allow me to bring this scene to light:

a. This scene takes place right after the end of FFVII. What is so important about that? Because, at the end of FFVII, Cloud was only speaking of trying to find a way to meet Aerith again. Why wouldn't he be optimistic, hopeful, and even smiling? Cloud believes he has an answer from the planet that will allow him to find the Promised Land and meet Aerith there.

b. Cloud says "my new life", not "our new life". If he intended to begin a romantic relationship with Tifa, why wouldn't he say "our" and include her as well? If Cloud chose Tifa at the end of FFVII, like so many CloTis think, he wouldn't have a problem with including Tifa in this statement.

c. Cloud's entire reason for going on living was stated right there: "I'll never be forgiven unless I do". And who does Cloud wish forgiveness from? Aerith. So, right then and there the truth comes to light-- Cloud has chosen to go on living because he wishes to be forgiven for his sins. I am sure he knows that Aerith (not to mention Zack) would want him to go on living and not be consumed by regrets. So, Cloud's "new life" is based on an attempt to be forgiven by living for the sake of those who died, not some idea of a romance with Tifa.

d. Starting over again isn't a new experience for Cloud. He states in CoT that every time he thought his "new life" was starting, he always "screwed it up". So, the idea that Cloud is starting a new life just to go make lots of babies with Tifa is pretty much quashed. This is something Cloud has attempted more than once. And, later in CoT, Cloud really does "screw it up" when he starts the long downward spiral into depression. Cloud's new life doesn't truly start until the end of AC, when he is free of regrets (and riding out to see Aerith in the flower field *smirk*). And, considering that a CloTi romance still hadn't bloomed by then or even a year afterward, I'd say the chances of Cloud and Tifa ending up together are pretty much nada.

e. Cloud states he'll be okay because he has Tifa with him, not that he's starting a new life because he has her with him. Honestly, I don't see anything romantic here. o_0 Cloud speaks of being a failure in the past when trying to start anew and then says he thinks he'll make it this time because he has Tifa there to support him. Tifa is his best friend and is like a mother or a sister to him. Why wouldn't Cloud count on her for support???

f. Tifa's reaction doesn't suggest that she took Cloud's statement in a romantic way. Considering that Tifa once had romantic feelings for Cloud in the past, she should have picked up immediately on romantic flirtation from Cloud. However, she merely responds with a bland "You've always had me", no nervousness or shyness that any normal girl would have displayed if a present/past love interest was displaying romantic intent. This entire conversation had nothing out of the ordinary in it, and Tifa's reaction is proof of that. Her simple answer is enough to tell even the most ignorant person that Tifa is merely letting Cloud know that she has always been there to support him and always would be. Tifa's later revelation of motherly feelings for Cloud also serves to crush any ideas of romance in this scene. If Cloud and Tifa were flirting and hinting at a future romance, why the sudden change in emotions for Tifa?

g. The Compilation says otherwise. Later in CoT, Cloud reverts to his usual lone wolf behavior, running off on his motorcycle, Fenrir, and staying gone all the time; hiding things from Tifa; and refusing to speak about his feelings with Tifa. Nothing has changed by the time AC begins, only Cloud has actually stopped speaking to Tifa and everyone else altogether and has sought refuge in Aerith's church. When DoC occurs, you get to see that Cloud is still out running around on Fenrir and not spending time at Seventh Heaven; the only thing that is confirmed is that Tifa keeps in close contact with both Barret and Cloud. If Cloud and Tifa truly started a "new life" together at the beginning of CoT, S-E sure has a funny way of showing it.

Random CloTi: "O rly? Well, Cloud blushes at Tifa!"

The scene in question?

When they were alone, Cloud commented, "It's not like you to get weighed down."

"Now you know... how I am."

"No. You're upbeat, and strong. And if you forget that, then I'll get you to remember."

"Oh, you will?"

"Yeah, probably," Cloud added with a blush.

When looking up the definitions for the word "blush", you will note that blushing is considered a reddening of the face from embarrassment, shame, modesty, or guilt. So, no, blushing isn't strictly a reaction to someone else's hawtness. XD Cloud only blushed when Tifa called him on his statement that he would get her to remember how "upbeat and strong" she is. Cloud's confidence evaporates when Tifa questions him and he answers with a mere "probably", a sign of embarrassment and/or shame. How is that romantic??? Cloud has had problems remembering promises to Tifa in the past (e.g. the promise at the well), so why wouldn't he be embarrassed at the reminder? And, of course, down the road in AC, it is evident that, once again, Cloud forgot a promise made to Tifa. He never once reminded Tifa that she is supposedly "upbeat and strong".

Also, it is interesting to see Cloud attempting to support Tifa in this scene. Considering he had been supported all throughout FFVII by Aerith, Tifa, and his other friends, Cloud is trying to return the favor in this scene. Therefore, Cloud is speaking words that he truly isn't comfortable with, and putting up a brave (but false) front. When Tifa turns to him, in either concern or surprise by Cloud's attempt to be positive, and questions him, Cloud becomes uncertain and embarrassed (e.g. stammering out a lame "Yeah, probably" and blushing in embarrassment). After this scene, Cloud is never shown attempting to support anyone like this again, which just goes further to prove that Cloud's behavior here was a facade.

Another thing to note here is Cloud's complete lack of understanding in regards to Tifa's personality. He remarks that it isn't like Tifa "to get weighed down" and that Tifa is "upbeat and strong". However, from Case of Tifa, not to mention FFVII itself, you see that this is not the case at all. In CoT, Tifa was overwhelmed with guilt due to the actions of AVALANCHE and often questioned whether or not she deserved to live or die. Tifa feared for her future and felt helpless. Even Barret knew Tifa's true nature, saying, "If Tifa doesn't work, she'll just get to thinkin', and 'fore you know it she won't be able to do nothin' else." Does this sound like someone who doesn't "get weighed down"? Does this sound like someone who is "upbeat and strong"?

Hell, even in FFVII, Tifa was never the upbeat, strong member of the party. She was always lamenting this or that, whining about Cloud, saying she didn't know what to do, asking to be protected, etc... Barret even remarked once about how much of a "wimp" Tifa had become at one point during the game. Tifa was never upbeat and strong. She admitted this herself in CoT, saying to Cloud: "Now you know... how I am." In fact, the one who was always upbeat and strong, regardless of her crappy past and all of the terrible events surrounding her was Aerith. And the one who was never weighed down by regret was Aerith. Is Cloud somehow transposing Aerith's personality on Tifa? It seems that way.

Hmm, I think Cloud truly loved Tifa. I say this because we see back in the past that Cloud was trying everything so to prove to Tifa something when he was young. (I don't remember much at all, I haven't play VII for awhile.)

Then he meets Aerith, which she is acting like that to him because of him reminds her of Zack. Perhaps Cloud was 'touched' emotionally by Aerith, since he seems all emo, lol.
But at end, when Tifa saves him back there from the Lifestream and especially in AC, he is more close with Tifa. He even considers her a family along with Denzel.

regardless of past crushes and love, the true intended couple of FFVII was indeed Cloud and Aeris. This is hinted more than enough times in the Complitation. Including the infamous quote, "Cloud carries his own undying feelings for Aerith, even to this very day..." and that Aerith is the woman forever engraved in Cloud's heart. it is likely that cloud felt confused at first, but he might then feel glad to see so. anyway, zack was his very friend when in shinra, and probably the most important friend(cloud seldom talk and is not easy to approach. but zack really had a strong effect on him). this may lead to cloud's some confusing feeling about aerith when he first met her. but as time goes by, cloud was no longer confused with his inner world(when tifa helped hin to realise so), and that might be the very time that he got to realise that only could tifa be his forever soulmate.

umm i think cloud really love them both like during the game he's really into Aerith he became attached to her and Aerith loved him because he reminded her about Zack so much. but in the end cloud's true love is Tifa. cloud was never destined to be with Aerith. I think Cloud loves Aerith(look at my avatar), just because Tifa is still alive doesn't mean Cloud automatically has to love her. And Barret is with them too, it's not just Cloud and Tifa and the kids, and Barret was the one who came up with the 'family' idea. Aerith told Zack to his face that she doesn't like him anymore, so they won't be getting back together. Aerith said she loved Cloud more than Zack. Cloud and Aerith were also mentioned to have a special bond, and that Tifa was jealous of that bond(of course). Then Dirge of Cerberus instruction manual, japanese version: "A girl with the blood of the Ancients flowing through her veins, who is engraved in Cloud's heart for the rest of his life."

And when Tifa was called "koibito" it was saying she was a sweetheart, meaning she was a nice, sweet person. Cloud nor anybody else wasn't even mentioned on the page, so how could it be talking about relationships? And how does it go from "Tifa is a like a mother, a sweetheart, and a close ally in battle". How is it talking about personality then relationship, then back to personality again? Especially when Nomura says he doesn't even know whether Cloud and Tifa have had a relationship during the 2 year gap.

There is a prequel title in which this relationship(with the dark haired SOLDIER) is hammered down very securely, even going as far as to tie iconic aspects of her character to this man(flowers, the color of her dress and the ribbon in her hair is a gift from this man that she still wears), and making her interactions with our blonde hero(treasured by C/A fans everywhere), almost carbon copies with the ones she had with Crisis Core's hero; almost because the only thing really missing is, well, the mutual romance.

The Ultimania drives home their relationship many times, with quotes explaining that she and (not like you didn't know, right?) Zack Fair, were in love, destined, irreplaceable to one another.

There is not one single quote that says anything about a love between Cloud and Aerith even existing, much less one that describes it in the way they have with Zack and Aerith.

Hello Rise, I am Quexinos and I am looking for Cleriths like you to debate with. Let me point out why the Case of Lifestream white koibito is debatable. All of the novellas are written the same way which is third person limited. Third person limited has the narrator tell the story through one characters eyes and one character's eyes only. An easy way to look at this is to simply look at the sentence in context. Is it a universally accepted fact that Cloud is someone to be protected? No, it's Aerith's feelings that Cloud is someone to be protected. We can also take into account other statements from Case of Lifestream Black such as, "The man thought this unacceptable. The planet was to be his to rule, and to become a part of that system would be nothing short of defeat." Obviously, the narrator isn't stating the planet was to be Sephiroth's rule as a fact, but rather that Sephiroth believes it to be so. So clearly the novella is only telling us Aerith's feelings, and not stating anything as fact.

Here are some more examples I'd like you to look at.
Leaving Cosmo Canyon, Nanaki made a rough plan of his journey. First he will go west where Yuffie’s hometown Wutai is and then he will travel around and see the long narrow islands to the north south. After that, he will go east. On a big island there was Rocket Town where Cid is, Barret’s hometown Corel and, Tifa and Cloud’s hometown Nibelheim. Then he will try going north. He’s also thought about visiting the uninhabited borders as well as every nook and corner which was going to take a lot of time but, Nanaki wasn’t worried about that at all. To Nanaki whose tribe has a lifespan of five hundred or even a thousand years that no human could ever have, what meaning could it have?This entire paragraph is Nanaki's thoughts and perspective. Not universal fact. It's the same thing in all the other Cases of.

For half a year he roamed the world. Other than the geostigma problem, life outside Midgar had returned to some semblance of normal. The only difference was that hardly anyone used Mako--not a single reactor was operating. At one time, this would have been considered a victory for Barret and the rest of the anti-Shinra movement, but the feeling of being lost overcame any sense of satisfaction. There was no place for a man with a gun attached to his right arm except amidst battle and chaos."There is no place for a man with a gun attached to his right arm..." Is that a universal fact, or just Barret's POV? And notice it does NOT say "He feels that the only place for him..." so if we apply the same logic that we should have no reason to doubt these narratives unless it says "S/he felt" or "S/he thought" it becomes a universal fact that there is no place for a man with a gun attached to his arm except a battle field. and we KNOW that's not a fact, but it is Barret's PoV.

Now I'm not saying Aerith is wrong or crazy or anything, but the story is told from her point of view. That is why that koibito is debatable. However the one used in Reunion files is straight from Nomura's mouth. Now it does not say who she is a lover to, this is true, but it also does not say who she is a mother to. It does not say who she is an ally in battle to. Using your logic, Sephiroth could be the one she's a mother to and she could be an ally in battle to Loz.

That line of reasoning simple does not work in this case. If you can figure out who she is a mother and an ally to, you can figure out who she is a lover to.

Now my stance on this whole issue is that Cloud x Tifa is canon and has been deemed so several times by the creators. Did Cloud love Aerith when she was alive? It's possible, and certainly debatable, but he is with Tifa now and he's doing good so far.

I was wondering how many of you have seen this quote by Nojima:


"First, there’s the premise that things aren’t going well between Tifa and Cloud, and that even without Geostigma and Sephiroth, it would still be the same. I don’t mean to get into my views on romantic love, marriage and family. (laughs) After ACC, maybe Denzel and Marlene can get them to work it out. Perhaps things would have gone well with Aerith, but Aerith’s responsibility is big, I think." ~Nojima, interview about On the Way to a Smile

My question is why would Nojima bring up love, marriage and family in the context of Tifa and Cloud and Case of Tifa, and then mention Aerith as a hypothetical love interest if Tifa was not a current love interest?
