The go could be a purchase for me. But the slim isn't a buy unless the backwards compatibility is put back in; and I doubt it will be.

I think the ArsTechnica Mole has pretty much confirmed it. As far as I know, he/she has yet to be wrong yet with their leaks. They also confirmed the PSP Go, but I still think that's going to be the exact same "PSP Go View" bundle from SCEE.

man, i reaaaaly want a ps3 with backwards compatibility. when i play my ps2 games on my hd tv, it comes out all jagged and fugly. but apparently, when you play ps2 games through a ps3 on an hd tv, every thing looks normal. (technical crap that i don't really understand, but that's what i've seen in several forums on different websites).

^i've played my ps2 games on my HDTV with a ps2 and nothing wrong there. i 've never heard before of someone having problems with that but you should call Sony if everything else fails

Playing SD games on a HDTV can be troublesome. Games for Wii also have this problem.

I still feel its too early to be doing a slim..especially when it comes to their sales.

Doing a slim version has nothing to do with the state of sales of the current PS3 version.

Doing a slim version of the PS3 would reduce production costs and thus allow Sony to make more money.

This. Exactly.

Sony are just waiting for all the PS3's currently on shelves to be bought up.

EDIT: I think they may drop it at TGS, in time for the holidays.

I do not see PS3 slim hitting stores until 2010.

i wanna know what they'll cut out of the original ps3

They can't really cut anything, I mean, what could they take out? The hard drive and disc drive? Neither of those would happen. The only issue would be air circulation, I'm not sure how they'll get around that roadblock unless the 45nm chips just run that cool.

why can't sony do what microsoft did and release a version of the console without a hard drive?

...because that would be pointless?

Seriously, how would you save/install anything? How does this work on the Xbox?

Not to mention many of the PS3's most popular games, such as MGS4, have mandatory installs, and would run horribly on the console without them. I think Hynad is right: it not so much about stripping the console to make it cheaper to produce, but finding a way to make the production of the components cheaper. A price drop is inevitable, Sony is just trying to be smart about it.

the x360 version without the hard drive uses memory cards. idk if there's a mem card slot on the ps3, but can't they just implement a small drive in the systems case that's big enough to store several save files?

and why does mgs4 have to be a mandatory install? lets say all these rumors about mgs4 going to the x360 were true, you think it'd be a mandatory install too? i don't. i believe sony makes certain games with these "mandatory installs" because they know you'd benefit from it. they don't give a choice to say "no", even though it would still work the other way.

Well you do benefit. The main reason for MGS4 is to quicken load times by having information on the HD instead of having to read it from the disc. Blu-ray doesn't read as quickly as HDDVD. Some games like Killzone 2 circumvented this by encoded the same information at various locations across the disc, but MGS4 was already a dual-layer blu-ray.

As for MGS on Xbox, I don't think it's impossible, at least from a technical standpoint. The problem would be storage. Also, Rockstar complained to Microsoft that the lack of a standard HD was a major barrier for them, preventing them from making the type of game the want to make. My guess is Microsoft will reveal something in the near future regarding HD, maybe a price drop or an HD bundle, which would better facilitate games like MGS being ported.

I remember being really surprised when I first read that the 360 would have no HD, since it was standard on their previous console. But since they're charging extra for it, it makes sense, since the 360 was priced to undercut the competition.

blue ray reads faster then dvd, it's just it usually has more information to read, it can hold over 5 times more information so they can afford to have larger files, but larger files take more time to load, thus the problem

Screw it there both real. I have less than 1% interest in the PSP GO since it does not have a UMD drive (I have my reasons) ill be picking up the Dissidia bundle. The new PS3 ill wait till I get a good look at it.

That's what I mean, but for all practical purposes it's slower. So for games like MGS4 having an install to the HD compensates. From, say, a purely graphical standpoint there's no reason they couldn't replicate the game on the 360...the only problem I could see would be raw storage & finer effects like particle effects that would require the Cell.

if they now release a slim version then i think i'd be fast to pick up my thick version because now when i think about it my ps2 slim has been fucking up 2 times costing me almost the same amount of money that i bought the system
