View Full Version : Big Papa's Rosary

So I was watching a Versus trailer for no apparent reason than just to admire Glasses and his metrosexual blase disposition when I encountered this little gem:

That's right, Big Papa is wearing a rosary. Three Hail Marys with Our Father's at each side, the crucifix, the Hail Holy Queen, yo dat's a rosary manz.
This can mean many things, but what is certain, this is a fantasy based on reality therefore:
1. Nomura is experimenting with Catholicism. Be very afraid.
2. Catholicism = canon
3. Bible thumpers are bound to be somewhere in this game.
4. Child molesting priests = canon
5. There is no doubt that Noctis got molested by an older man.

Nomura contemplated converting to Catholicism. He decided against it upon learning that God would not accept his homosexuality.

So in turn he decided to put that chapter of his life into Versus, that disgraceful sinner.

John Paul II would be the ridiculously hard optional boss.

It's not quite a rosary, though it sure looks like one. You're right about the crucifix and three Hail Marys with Our Fathers on either side, but there's just a ring where the Hail Holy Queen should be. The rest of it is completely off, with groups of six rather than ten, and no Our Fathers in between.
I think it's more likely that they're just using Catholic imagery due to the Italian influence.
Then again, they seem to like random Christian symbolism to begin with, with the blatantly-obvious baptism symbolism in Advent Children probably being the best example.

I've seen rosaries that have a circle or other shapes to represent the Hail Holy Queen. I did notice the lack of Our Fathers between the 6 Hail Marys (which should be 10), but it still looks like a rosary of sorts.
Japan loves to experiment with Christianity. They really get off by it in their video games and anime. So to them the explanations of Adam and Eve or Moses or any other biblical story is completely new, while to the western audiences get really bored or feel that the information is very redundant. Perhaps the use of Catholic icons is to give a better representation of Italy, since the Versus World is based on Italian imagery, or there is probably a religion in the game that is very similar to Catholicism.
All I know is that according to the nuns back from Catholic school, Big Papa is doing wrong by wearing his rosary as a necklace. So he's either ignorant or he's going to play the role of "The Really Religious Guy" like Wakka from FFX.

Come now, don't tell me you're squimish about the fact that priests had their way with Noctis, or Big Papa for that matter. I'm sure he was touched many times as a child.
"Bless me father for I have sinned."
Care to refute my claims instead of abusing ellipsis like an illiterate?

This thread gives me a strange feeling of deja vu.
Except for Aurelia's awesomeness.

I happened to have encountered a thread just like this a few hours after I created this thread. :aldo: But it didn't mention anything about Catholic priests, rape, or fanatics.

No. As a priest, I am attracted to choirboys.

Oh my mistake. I can see why you like those choirboys so much, them and their trained throats.

I'm sick of calling him "Scar Guy." It's boring and lacks personality. Big Papa is full of color and character. It's very easy to tell who "Big Papa" could possibly be out of everyone in Versus.

Amen to that. And besides Big Papa is more original since how many "scar guys" are in video games and movies. Though I thought of Papa John's pizza when I first heard people use it.

I just hope they don't get in trouble for adding religion to a game...(religion and games don't mix).

^You've never played a Shin Megami Tensei game. I can tell. And it's not like you can't, because that shit gets through the censors without issue.

I call him Guy Scarro, because I thought of it and I'm awesome so therefore it is an awesome name.

An awesome name from an awesome person such as yourself.

Well he looks like the big guy of the entourage. Although it would be funny if he turned out to be the youngest. It's kind of like in cartoons when someone says, "Shut chyouse face or I'll get Tiny on you."
"I'm not afraid of no Tiny!"
And then Tiny turns out to be a giant rugged man that proceeds to beat the crap out of the non-believer.
