View Full Version : No Summons..? No Need?

Some people argue the Noctis has been give a ridiculous amount of powers already. Do you all think he should still be able to summon in his game? If so which summon? Remember, the game is dark themed. So some summons that look cute or have less dire effects way be a lost cause. If you can come up with original summons!
Most of all though, I believe, for the first time, summoming is weapon/item based. What with the telekinetic powers Noctis has, I feel like he's summoning them from the crystal itself and shaping crystal shards and magical energy into the conglomerate weapons you see.

I don't see why there shouldn't be a summoner. Who knows? It may not be Noctis who does the summoning but another character. There are other characters, you know...

Just thinking about monsters and Summons in the settings of the Versus world is already weird. But I still would want summons, however if there was some reason why they did not put them in there, it wouldn't be the end of the world.
We'll see if they put a more realistic twist on the summons or not. (If they ever decide to talk about Versus again in the next 2 years :aldo:)

Isn't versus supossed to play like kingdom hearts and not ff, are there multiple characters? I thought It was just the one, like in KH, or am I just wrong, anyways it depends on how the game plays if i want summons or not

Nomura said that it's more party-based than KH is, because it's a FF game. He didn't say how much control we'd have over the party members, though; I wouldn't be surprised if it was limited in order to make real-time combat possible.
He also said that there were going to be summons, and that we'd fight them before they were available to use.

The swords are the summons? :rolleyes: They might just do another XII and name some stuff after summons... afterall the main game will have it os maybe there's no need to have it here as you say..
But yea dunno how this summon thing will work if they have it in Versus.... being "complicated action RPG" afterall...

Yeah we haven't even seen the final character designs. I can pretty much list what we know.
1. Confirmed names Stella and Noctis
2. One of the first cutscenes of the game
3. What the characters look like (not what they dress in)
4. Small plot details. (the legend and whatever)
I honestly think that's it.....pretty sad after 3 years though :cookie:

Well, it is kind of hard to imagine summons roaming around such a realistic-looking world.
On the other hand, until we see what the summons actually look like, it's not like we can say that they absolutely won't fit. I have faith in Squenix to find a way to make it work. ^_^

@Naunen
They better be characters he fights, because since it's an Act/RPG I doubt a lot of people will join his party. Like KH games, you likely only have 2 or 3 others. Likely the Shotgun guy and later on Stella.
@Kurai Princess
I still think, despite the realism, they'll be monsters. It's still a fantasy world.
@ Ikkin
Where'd you hear all that?
@ Cheese
What's so odd about swords as "summons". In Naruto they summon items all the time. Say each weapon was named after a summon. He summons them and taps into their elements. That sound stupid to you?
@ Aurelia
I don't think it's a cop out. Square said they were keeping the recent FFs as much a secret as they could this time. We were warned. Half the stuff we know about any of their recent work was leaked.
@Ikkin
I personally wouldn't mind summons. And I'd love a modern day realistic world to feature super fantasical monsters and spells. That's what FF7 was like. And 8 too. A realistic world with fantasy quests still taking place. I can imagine that.

well you should also consider that there could be more people in the party because if you remember in KH if you had an additional assist character (Mulan Aladdin Auron etc...) then you could switch out the side characters. Mulan with Donald for instance.
Although I think they are just gonna have the 4 dudes, unless the decide to throw a set of boobs in there for the lulz.
I'm not saying I wouldn't like summons, frankly it would be even more awesome to see it in a more realistic world.

Where'd you hear all that?
The mention of summons can be found here: (http://finalfantasy-xiii.net/forums/showthread.php?t=4750)
Versus 13 will be "more like a traditional Final Fantasy game than FF13, in Versus 13 you travel across mountains, ocean, wandering in dungeons and battle with summon beasts and so on."
"Summon beasts" doesn't really make sense as anything other than monstrous creatures that one or more of our protagonists can summon.
As for the controllable party members, I can't find the quote where that was mentioned, unfortunately. I distinctly remember Nomura saying that there'd be some kind of control over them because it was a Final Fantasy game, but that's not really possible to Google, and it's one of those little things that fall between the cracks because it got mentioned as a little clip of information rather than a full interview. I'm not saying you said stupid. I'm not mad. I'm asking if you would find it as a stupid idea.
@Kurai
I agree with all you said.. And I think having an all boy party is stupid. People already make video games that alienate women. It's wrong. Besides, I perfer tough women to stand along side Noct than weak girly girls or overly macho guys. I don't like the really tall friend. Only the Glasses and Shotgun. I don't like Stella either. She seems to either be pretending be or really is girly.
@Aurelia
Could you talk a little more maturely. I'm trying to have a serious conversation with you. I understand you passion. But When talking to someone who respect a character and the recent ideals of the company in question, it would be better to " do on to others as they are doing on to you". In other words, unless I start cussing up a blue streak in my posts, could you not do that to me.
But yeah. You have a point.
@Kurai
Take it easy. All these games still have a long way to go before they come here. Square not even thinking about us. JPN comes first. Once it's out there, then worry about here. I will continue to patiently wait as long as it takes. I've got comics to write, a job, other video games, there's lots of things to do that will help with the wait. Things done right often take a while.
@Aurelia
LOL I didn't like FF12's either. Other than Mateus and Ultima. But that was for looks. All of them were ridiculously hard to use and the character would get EXP alone when they used them. I want a summon to join the party! Have 4 character fighting and the summon would appear and by the 5th. And foes would be so hard you'd NEED a summon and all your members working in unison. And I'm not jsut talking about boss battles.
@Ikkin
Thanks for that info. As for Noct's clothes, wouldn't it be sweet if like Sora's, runes appear and glow on them when he taps into his overdrive/limit break?
@Aurelia
I don't know why people call Noctis a "fag" just because he's quite... I like the humble characters as much as the confident ones as long as they're strong and get the job done. Any character can grow on you in a good story. And please don't hate 'em just because the ladies like him for his coolness. I don't know if you're a guy. But a lot of guys have all but admitted to hating characters like Cloud, Squall, Noctis, and Sephiroth simply because of the attention women give them and their JPN culture style looks.
SUMMONS:
I think that there should be a return of the Feymarch, the home of the summons. And as Noctis travels the world he gets there and makes pacts with the summons once he discovers that his black magic isn't enough to defeat the white mage.

Ultima clearly had cervical cancer and Mateus had melanoma. Those summons were done wrong. The only reason I even recruited them because I am very big on completion status and finishing side quests. Just because Nomura says he's that way, doesn't mean he will. For all we know Noctis might be a Diet Squall or a Cloud Jr, or worse Squall Squared or Cloud Cubed.
Hmm this wouldn't be the first time someone confused me for a male on account of my rather androgynous behavior, but if the name Aurelia wasn't any indication of my sex then I don't know what is. And who said I hated Noctis? I love making fun of that ninny, but it doesn't mean I hate him. The only Versus character I hate is Stella. I hate the females for their blind devotion on a character who we know hardly anything of, and I hate more than the females are insanely gaga over this guy. Being a fangirl is one thing, but a RABID one? That's an entirely different story.
Those guys need to either hang around different females or they need to realize that not all cultures think that MANRY RAWR RUGGEDNESS is how the ideal male should look. I've encounted a bunch of fuckheads that believe that the American ideal look for a male is universal. Personally I think those guys should get their heads out of their asses and realize that not every female wants them. There's probably a reason why the girls aren't checking them out in the first place. :wtf:

So you're a woman. My apologizes if I offended you. I'm not gonna tell you what to do. I'm just trying to keep from cussing myself. A a black guy is too much of a stereotype for me to get into shouting contests and cussing matches. I went thru a phase of being the forum bafoon when I was in my mid teens. As a 23 yr old now, I need to at least TRY to be mature.
You got a point with Stella. She'll likely devote herself to Noctis once they find a away to stop their countries from making them fight each other.
The big guy might be a cool character for all I know. I just hope he isn't all brawn and no brains.
I like Cloud and Squall, but no, Noctis shouldn't be a copy of them. He should be his own person. Like Zidane and Tidus are both cheerful but not in the same way. A loveable two-timing thief and a watery soccer player trying to connect with his father.
I found Ultima and the maiden trapped in Mateus sexy. I'm sorry I just did. But I can't help still saying they were useless. the Ivalice group tried so hard to force players not to over-used them that's all.
So overall, you like Noctis, but you not in love with him enough to say he does no wrong. I can respect that. Though to me, I think he's one of those characters that's cool because he's kinds looks down on his foes with a overlord like expression like "How dare you, you worm." I hope not Cheese. I think he such just get more confident as time goes by. A split persona can be a gimmick. And has been used as such too often.
I'm also satified not knowing about Noctis' game yet. 13 isn't even out yet. No need to rush things. You got a point there Doe.
When you really get down to it, not many people want to play an ugly character. Not even guys. So it's best to create characters that are sexy to women and at least cool looking to guys (of course women can find them cool too). I think they did a good job of not letting Noctis' buddies runtogether. They don't all look like him with slight change, y'know.

Wouldn't it be okay to have Ifrit, Shiva, and Bahamut as long as they remolded them in a way so they fit? I mean, with a world map, it's likely you obtain summons by going to various dungeons all over the world. I think with all the magic stil in Versus despite it being a more realistic game, I doubt anyone would freak out because Bahamut was summoned. They'd freak out because of what he can do, not the fact that he exist. Remember, V13 follows the blueprint that 13 does. L'Cie for example. So if they know monsters and chocobo and moogles exist, they must know about summons. Plus, I'm betting EVERYTHING that Noctis' rival, robed Jesus is a summoner.

well, since ff13 does have the old school summons, and ffv13 is supposed to be like the alternate version of it, i don't see why they wouldn't be in there. makes sense like that. but still, *I* wanna see new summons. that's one of the things i liked about 12.

They'll likely do like they did in FF8 and split the summon list with original ones and the classic ones.

No, that's Noctis' full name.
I hate names that are overly common place.
Bob. Charles. Joe. John. Max. So boring.
I want something in old english or or latin or mideval spanish.
One thing they never do these days is give ANY of the party member JAPANESE names. A shame.
I'd like some japanese characters for that matter. And some asian-based storylines (myth wise). SO many have been based off greek and roman stuff. It's tiresome at this point. There are other cultures and myths.

Names means familiarity, familiarity brings fondness, and fondness brings doujins and porn. See how one thing leads to another? Why do you think Before Crisis doujinshi are so rare?

i'm sure there are some rpgs with characters that have japanese names and asian themed story lines. there has to be.

Yeah, but most stay overseas. I liked how Persona games stick to the japanese names. I thought with Noctis' world more based off JAPAN than usual, that Tetsuya would make the first FF japanese lead. I mean lots of characters have looked JPN, but not actually named such. Like Tidus, Yuna, and Vincent. And now Noctis. But now that he's named that, I like it. It's catchy.
I had a thought. If in FF13 some summons are also vehicles and airships. Why not have summons in FFv13 be part weapon. Start out as weapons when summoned (axes, swords, guns, etc) and then release into their TRUE form of the enormous spirits they've been in past games.
A new summon would be issued to Noctis and I'd call it: Shellshade. It'd be that sword in your avatar Doeman, and it'd shift into a goddess covered in a reaper's robe but riding a motorcycle shaped like a horse (like the four horsemen). It'd be FFv13's Odin-like character like Yojimbo(ff10). Plus it'd be nice to have a female summon in that position. Most summons being male.
I'd also like to have a lead character ride a behemoth and keep it around him like a boy and his dog. They'd charge into battle together and do double techs. Of course I'd use the most popular purple and red/orange behemoth design.

but, i did see someone before mention something about the swords being related to summons and i thought that idea was brilliant. but, i don't like how the swords would eventually turn into the beasts. each summon has their own special attribute right?
ex: lets say noctis summons ifrit. he gets a sword with fire attributes. (as time goes on, you can level up each summoned sword for more power, extra effects, yada yada yada)

I brought up the sword-summon idea earlier. Pages ago.
I agree with the Ifrit idea. But you don't want all of them to be swords right? Okay, then...
Bahamut = sword
Shiva = daggers
Ifrit = clawed glove
Alexander = sheild
Odin = javalin

well, i'm too lazy to check out that trailer with him summoning all the swords, but that's also another great idea. having a variety of summon-able weapons would mix it up a bit. dunno how you thought of those specific weapons for those specific summons though..
shiva daggers?
ifrit clawed glove? bleh
bahamut (regular?) sword
dunno who the other two are.

Alexander was from 9 and 8.
Odin is in most FFs. The Summon that does a one-hit kill.
I picked weapons that seemed to go with the summon's persona.
I heard in FF4's remake that Ifrit get's drunk in the Feymarch. heh I've also wanted to have a game starting summons who were turned into people as they travel thru the dimensions and universes of FFs. They'd try to discover who did this to them (it'd star the ones I just named, with Bahamut as lead) and they briefly return to their True Form (which would be the name of their limit break) when they take lots of or deal lots of damage. It'd play like Star Ocean 3.
Noctis would only have 2 summons based on the system we're currently discussing. He only has spears and swords. So he'd only summon the Versus summon of swords and one of spears. Which will likely be original. I hope Lightning gets her own NEW summon too. Like Yuna got Valefor and Garnet got Ark.

Maybe there will be summons but it's apperance would be different just like nero's devil trigger in DMC 4 which will give players additional effects

i'm guessing the summons will be in shards or will appear as enemies if you can't use them but the question on my mind WHAT WILL THEY LOOK LIKE if or will they be the same as XIII
Kurai Warrior
May 07 2009, 01:46 AM
Well, we know they won't be the same as Final Fantasy XIII's. If the difference in the kind of airships Versus has is any kind of hint at how different everything else will be. I think they will take a more realistic spin on the summons. I'm sure we'll find out in about another 8 years or so. :aldo:

Listen if FFVIII could have summons, then so can Versus. As long as they aren't the Cancerous Espers of Ivalice, I'm fine with it.

"----Alexander's been around since 6, 7, 8, and 9."
My bad.
"Aren't Tidus and Yuna based on japanese dialect?"
What, their names or how they talk?
"Maybe there will be summons but it's apperance would be different just like nero's devil trigger in DMC 4 which will give players additional effects"
Maybe instead of just summoning a spirit, you merge with them and become one being. Thus changing the character's looks and fighting style as they fight with one mind with a summon.
No summons from different games look the same. Not even if it's a sequal on connected game like Versus. They'll change their look for Noctis' world like always I bet.
"If the difference in the kind of airships Versus..."
Have you heard of airship types in FFv13?
The only game with no summons was FFx-2 and they still were in it, just not useable. Instead the 3 leads switched into hidden giant forms which seemed to be a nod as summoning. In that they fought alone in these states.

----"Tidus" and "Yuna" are Okinawan names for "sun" and "moon".

----Hurr hurr, then they all start forgetting things and become more like dolls or ideal soldiers. In a way, it'd sound like FFVIII with a brainwashing twist.

You read my statement completely wrong.
I was simply saying that if the difference in the airships in Versus is any kind of consolation about how different everything else will be, then we can assume that there might be a realistic twist on the summons.

I don't like brainwashing, but as long as the characters regained their true memories and freedom by the middle, I'd enjoy it.
