Because Manga isn't everything :wtf:

It's strange, I've recently started getting into comic books. I'm not really into the whole OMG SUPERHERO, AWESUMZ! kinda thing, but I have been reading some great shit.

Y: the Last Man owns me right now, it's written as well as a good TV show (not surprising as one of the Lost writers is the creator). The title is pretty self explanatory.

Also been reading 'American Virign' which is about some abstinence-only posterboy going off the deepend as his girlfriend gets brutally murdered. It took me a while to get into it, but hey they made me relate to a super-christian so you know it's good

Yeah creepy.

Oh and Buffy Season 8, just cuz Buffy rocks.

I've been a comic book reader for years now.

I'm mainly into DC stuff (Mostly Superman).

If I'd have recommendation, those would be included:

- Kingdom Come (by Mark Waid and Alex Ross... a Masterpiece if I ever read one)

- All Star Superman (A mini-series by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely)

- Superman: Red Son (by Mark Millar)

- Watchmen (Naturally)

Yeah, mostly Superman stuff...

New X-men Achedemy/childhoods end- yea it had a name change lol, anyways it's about a group of students in the X-men achedemy after it's like a full fledge school, and it's just about their lives and stuff in the school, for the first year anyways, after that all hell breaks lose and they start getting killed off and get pulled into hell and yea it's a great comic

"Watchmen"
Yes I read it way before the movie came out. Read it back in 95, I was uh... *does math* 7, yeah.

"Heavy Metal"

"Catwoman"

"X-Men"
Before Wolverine became the star child of the series even though he's not an original X-Men

"Batman"

"Witchblade"
OmiVersus reminded me of that.

I don't know why, but I don't like books with pictures unless that's all there is in them... Nothing against comic books or their readers. I've actually tried to get into them cause I love the shows/movies but I can't get into the comics...

Could it be the way you're reading them?

As a kid, I used to have trouble enjoying the 'snapshot' style of comics/manga too because I was just flat-out not reading them the way they were meant to be read.

I was looking at the panels as photos rather than 'living', contiguous images with layers meant to be imagined/processed individually.

For me, mangas/comics are 10% reading, 90% imagination.

For example, a given panel might take up, say, 30 seconds if it were in cartoon/anime form.

In comic/manga form, however, you have to fill in those 30 seconds with your own imagination based on what the panel gives you.

Once you get the hang of it, I think you'll find they can be better entertainment than their anime counterparts.

:patriot:

BTW, I'm not saying the animation medium is inferior to mangas/comics.

If I had the ability to magically animate mangas (without using hallucinogenics), taking the work out of reading them, I would use it.

it's not about imaginations it's about having the panels flow with each other, it's not a story book, it's more of a flip book, you read the text as you absorb the image then go to the next one

Hey, I got into comics books for a bit (mainly New X-men academy and the ultimate versions of other ones, and I was trying to get into more X-men ones, but the thing is there's just so mcuh back story, but the original are just so lame, the first one was just so god damn corny (I download the old ones, buy the newer ones, I find that fair, considering comics go up in cost with age instead of down and most ppl don't even bother reading them at that point just collecting...)

anyways, I'm trying to look for something a little less mainstream and was wondering if anyone knew of anything that's similar to what I've already read that doesn't have a 400 comics of back story, I've already check out a few that have already been mentioned and am in the process of checking out the rest, so yea, any suggestions would be appreciated

Never was really into comics at all; was always more of a book guy.

I remember reading the Crow at some point in my early teens, but the only comic I read & really thoroughly enjoyed was the Watchmen, and then only because it was recommended to me by someone whose taste in literature I appreciated.

The problem with comics for me is the huge amount of canon material you have to wade through in order to make sense of anything. It really seems to me like something you'd have to pick up during your childhood & follow for a protracted period. I really like the iconography of some comics: the art style, superhero designs. I'd rather watch the old superman cartoons or looks at the art than read the comics themselves tbh.

BTW has anyone seen the Watchmen movie? Is it any good?

I mostly read manga, but I've read Watchmen and the majority of the Sandman series. I don't really care for the mainstream superheroes but Darkhorse does a lot of really good ones that I like.
