Hello, I've been lurking the threads but I haven't seen a topic similar to this, so I thought I'd give it a go.
FF7 is regarded by many as one of the best games of all time, if not the best FF of them all. Among fellow FF players I need not go into details, but certainly Square Enix knows how massively popular FF7 is since they did the compilation with Crisis Core, DoC, Advent Children, etc.
My question / theory then is, knowing how popular FF7 is, do Square Enix have an incentive to make FF13 similar to FF7 in some ways, whether subconsciously or referentially, to capitalize upon the fame of FF7, perhaps eventually even becoming more popular than FF7?
Some evidence that points to this is a quote from some Square Enix executive who basically says that Lightning is like a female version of Cloud Strife. If you've seen the leaked demo, she does this victory pose thing where she spins her gunblade and straps it into her sheath. Very similar to Cloud spinning his massive swords.
Here are some parallels that I've noticed so far that might hint at FF13 being "like" FF7 in some ways *spoilers abound*:
FF7: Cloud is a newcomer who jumps off a Midgar train with Barret to bomb a Mako reactor with the Avalanche posse. Cloud had gone batshit loony tunes at the time and thought he was Zack or some shit. Cloud once worked for Shinra, i.e. the evil government.
FF13: Female Cloud, er "Lightning" may be construed as a reluctant newcomer who joins the Anti-Cocoon resistance known as NORA. She is on a train with Black Afro Chocobo head man. She is also suffering from some kind of amnesia, and may not be the real "Lightning." She once worked for Cocoon, i.e. the evil Holy government.
Am I the only one who notes the parallel that in the beginning of FF7 you have Cloud and Barret jumping off a train and fighting a giant mechanical scorpion guard in the mako reactor, and in the beginning of FF13 you have Lightning and Black Afro Chocobo head man similarly jumping off a train to do battle with a giant white robot that also slightly resembles a scorpion?
I have a feeling FF13 is going to rock our world, with a global, psycho storyline like FF7. All we need now is female versions of Sephiroth, Genesis, and Zack.
