You'll get a lot of speculation in this thread, but no actual answers. We don't know.

For the top one, I don't know. Could be a dead/old fal'Cie. Bottom just some boss sent by bad guys.

actually, I think the top is a relic that the holy gov't stole from the fal'Cie, and the creatures are its guardians (I think they're fal'Cie)

It's probably related to crystal(seen it in several places) and these beasts are random??

crystal related disease or something and pretty cool epic treasure that people look for all the time but somehow the heroes of the story are able to find it easy

Funny how story intros say how people have been looking for a treasure for centuries and then the heroes who only recently hear about it find it by walking about 10 steps into the story.:wtf:

It's probably related to the fal'Cie and Crystals in some way.
