SE is up for a MMO Game on PC and xbox. And since its those platforms its pretty easy to estimate its the unreal engine.
Jesus, that was fast. One minute you’re licensing the Unreal 3 engine; next, you’ve announced an MMO that is coming to an American console, though if it’s exclusive or not remains to be seen. Look at you all grown up, Square. It almost brings a tear to my eye. In an interview with Pro-G, Senior VP of Software Development Hiromichi Tanaka says this about Square’s new, American based project.
“We are working on a next-generation MMORPG for 360 and Vista, but PS3 is a possibility.” Hopefully, Square will release more details about this mystery MMO soon. There’s zillions of questions floating around this announcement, and all we can do is speculate. For instance, will this game be a Final Fantasy branded title? Will it be part of “Fabula Nova Crystalux” aka the whoring out of FFXIII? If not Final Fantasy, then what franchise could they be putting into play here? Star Ocean? Front Mission? A little Dragon Quest love perhaps? C’mon Square, give us a sliver of info!
Simply put, this is a BIG announcement, both in Square and Microsoft’s favor. It’s not uncommon to have the PC take lead sku in an MMO, but 360? For Square? This is like a Twilight Zone. I have no doubt this will come to PS3 at some point (remember the slow bleed of Final Fantasy XI? *shudders*), but having MS as lead company on this new game is still gigantic. Kudos Square for poking your head out of the saran wrap that all Japanese companies seem to be stuck in lately.
