M'k I just saw this movie, and all I have to say is... it was flat out amazing to me.
Now for those of you who have read the graphic novel, you probably have things to complain about, I however, have not read it (yet).
Also Rorschach is my favorite character in the film, he was just plain badass, and he had some of the best lines in the movie IMO.

It's weird though, I have looked at a lot of online reviews and there are opinions that are pretty much all over the map. Some people say they didn't like it or flat out hated it, others say it was just average, and others say it was the best adaption ever and they loved it. So my question to you, the people who have seen it, are going to see it have read the graphic novel, or a combination of any of these. What did you think? If you have problems with it, say what they are.

Oh and Dr. Manhattan's genitals are love
EDIT: I have been reading more reviews, and for the people that just plain hated the movie and thought it was boring I think I know why...

I think many people went to this movie expecting a jam packed action movie with some blood and sex added in, but what they got was complex story and character development. So it came across as boring. Also, many of these people probably havn't read the graphic novel and pretty much knew nothing about the movie, so the plot was too complex and it all just seemed like a jumbled mess of scenes.

I actually knew basic plot details in the graphic novel, and I knew what I was in for.
It's not a perfect movie, I know they changed a lot of things and that some things were out of place and just unnecessary, but it's not near as bad as some people are making it out to be, it does not deserve to be called one of the worst movies ever.
My only complaint is that it was too short and felt a bit rushed in the second half of the movie, other then that it was great.

I thought i had a good mystery story but other then that I didn't think it was that great. I couldn't stand all the stupid older songs for each theme of the show. I think the story was good though I never read the comic. Also thought some of the violent scenes were out of place(showing the actual event) just seemed sort of not necessary.
also BLUE Man naked during show made it kind of comical. Loved the Comedian story though. And how everything was just punchline to what they were doing as the watchmen.

But all that is taken from the comic I am sure! Over all as a movie I give it 70

Rorschach got fucked over in the movie. :aldo:

Go read the graphic novel, it's still better than the movie. After seeing the movie, I can honestly say it did the best it could in 2 hours and 41 minutes to explain the novel. Did it do it justice? As a piece of film yes, but if you like Watchmen for the meaning, etc, etc, the novel is still the best source for that.

Just saw the movie an hour ago, I liked the visual style (go zack snyder) and I loved the pairing of the old songs with the scenes. I found the story just average but I'm glad I saw it.

Watchmen is a great film. People who fail to agree clearly was expecting 'Spiderman' when they went in the theaters. I thought the story was good, the visuals were stunning and it was a really intelligent superhero movie to watch. Besides, I've always loved Malin Akerman. :D

Ignore the bad reviews people. Go watch it.

I thought it was awesome, it was like a kick in the face to all of those cheap marvel superhero movies they've been making recently with all the sappy relationships and stupid lines like spiderman. The visuals were great and I think that Zack Snyder's style worked great for this movie. There were a few differences (one major one) from the book, but letting these parts go really helped it as a movie. Some parts of any story only work well with the book, and should be cut out of any movie.
It was really annoying that I got I.D.'d 3 times to get in though.

LOL, that's why I'm glad my mom was so chill about seeing this. I mean I'm 17 but for my state you need to be 18...don't ask me why its really retarded.
But yeah I don't think people are giving this movie enough credit, I think people need to see it twice or something so they can really try to understand it.

I haven't read the graphic novel either (yet), and very much enjoyed watching this movie. The song choices were appropriate and the visuals stunning. Huh, funny though, what reviews I did hear about were all positive (likely a confirmation bias on my part).

The violence was rather jarring but only because I rarely watch violent movies/television. The levels of nudity and sex scenes were quite a bit of a shocker which made me very surprised as to why the movie only had a pithy 'MA-15' rating (i.e. teens aged 15 and over can see the movie). It's not surprising at all that there would be negative reviews by the conservative christian types who dislike these controversial aspects.

Rorschach I liked the most; the Comedian though - I want to stab out his eyes with a fork for his callous treatment of women. The bleak impression that is conveyed throughout the movie of the degenerate nature of the human condition was really poignant and stayed with me as I left the cinema complex along with Rorschach's darkly fascinating monologues.

I'll very likely be buying myself a copy of the Watchmen graphic novel to see if Rorschach gets a better deal than he does in the movie.

Alan Moore's Watchmen graphic novel can't be translated into a movie. But Zack Snyder managed to do quite a good job rite thar. I enjoyed the movie for what it managed to pull from the novel and put it in a watchable pack. Plus I liked the rendition of the characters, although the omnipresent black rubber obviously came in (Ozymandias's costume <3). Rorschach was brilliantly played by Jackie Earle Haley, he was the high point of the whole story. Plus, Dr. Manhattan (OH TEH GENITALS) was mindblowing as well. The only character I think wasn't good enough played was the second Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman). Although convincing, it felt too artificial to me.

The violence wasn't something that surprised me, since I've watched way too much gory horor movies in my life. Plus the only true sex scene on the movie actually made me (read the whole theater) laugh with that "Hallelujah" background sound, plus Nite Owl II's previous epic failure at pleasuring Silk Spectre II.

In 2h41m, you have in a movie what you need to know about Moore's epic novel. But if you want the full epic package, get the novel please.

I read the graphic novel and I still absolutely loved the movie :)

I think that the lawsuit with Fox screwed things over and Zack announced that he is going to release a directors cut in theaters' in the summer that runs like 3 and a half hours or something then an ultimate edition on DVD that pretty much has everything.
So I can't wait :D

Rokuro
Mar 08 2009, 09:44 AM
The only violent part that looked like a horror movie was when they sawed that guy's arms off in the prison escape scene. I think it was because of the lighting or something.
But I think Snyder has gotten better since 300 (maybe it was just the story). I didn't even know there was a director's cut!
The only part that seemed out of place was Dr. Manhattan's voice but most of the other characters were casted very well, especially Nite Owl II

Here's some more info on an extended edition:
http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/05/27/watchmen-three-hour-theatrical-cut-4-12-hour-directors-cut-dvd-planned/
It was written a while before it came out in theaters, but they said that the extended would be around 4 1/2 hrs.

I have never read the graphic novel, and I probably never will. I also have seen the commercials for the movie many many times, and I didn't like it at all. It just didn't interest me. But I do hope for the people who do want to see it, that it turns out good for you.

Can I ask you why you even bothered posting, because it's not making any sense to me. Considering I am asking the opinions of those who have seen the movie, are going to see the movie, have read the graphic novel or a combination of these.
If you want nothing to do with the Watchmen, then you can't really contribute anything to this thread can you... :aldo:

I saw it last night, it was hard to keep up with the movie but slowly caught up. Good action and mystery and yes Rorschach was the best character in the movie and had the best lines in the movie, i know alot of peoples favorite line was after he burned (or fried xD) the guy from prison and look at all the prisoners and told them, "Maybe you dont seem to understand... that im not lock in here with you... YOUR LOCK IN HERE WITH ME!!!" so yeah... great movie, too much blue penis but deal with it, go see it, it was amazing!

Just saw it, it was pretty good. Didn't like the costumes though, they seemed very comic-like. I suppose they were meant to be like that, though. Oh, I didn't like the blue penis either. Seemed a bit random. But it was good enough for me.

Well, lets see. I saw a trailer for Watchmen and nearly passed out from pure anticipation from watching it. I then read the comics and they blew my mind. i guess no matter what i was going to be disappointed with the movie, but to be honest, when i was watching it, i was dying a little inside. there wasnt that many things i actually liked about the movie. i liked the opening credits and the song they put with it. i also liked the portrayal of Rorschach, Dr. Manhattan, and the Comedian. Nite Owl and Silk Specter not so much. I think that they didn't give the actors enough room to breath. I appreciate how (thou in the end not that much) they kept to the comics, but it didn't allow for much... originality (i think is the word I'm looking for). They had nice special effects and the fight scenes were well choreographed. I didn't like the extra blood and sex they threw in though, and the song choices (Hallelujah, for real?). I also felt the movie didn't have as much emotion as the comics did. In the end, they tried their best, but Watchmen is a better comic then a movie, and i encourage everyone to read them (they are pretty amazing).

I really enjoyed the movie, even though I haven't read the graphic novels. Some of the camera shots were amazing. My favorite was the Rorschach prison bathroom/swinging door shot. I also liked that they used the song "All Along the Watchtower" associated with the final 5 cylon reveal scene in Battlestar Galactica :cookie:

^ Thank God we had a director ballsy enough to fight the execs! I couldn't imagine a better guy for the job than Zach Snyder.

Rorschach was brilliantly played by Jackie Earle Haley, he was the high point of the whole story.
^ Fuckin' A!

FFS, why hasn't this guy been in more movies (aside from his Oscar-nominated 'pedo' role)?

I think we got damn lucky with the director, the cast, the screenwriter, the timing, everything.

Plus, Dr. Manhattan (OH TEH GENITALS) was mindblowing as well.
^ I agree! The only issue I had was with his voice: in the novel they background Dr. Manhattan's voice with blue, which always led me to imagine his voice as having an electric/pulsing/god-like quality.

Also, did you notice? Dr. Manhattan's junk got a massive size upgrade. Now he's porn-star material!

Not that it does him much good: he's unable experience the physical sensations of sex.

Not to mention the catastrophic consequences of reaching orgasm. (His body could only ejaculate pure energy!)

The only character I think wasn't good enough played was the second Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman). Although convincing, it felt too artificial to me.
^ I also thought her performance was shit.

The Comedian's (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) performance was a little weak too, but not as bad as Malin's.

In 2h41m, you have in a movie what you need to know about Moore's epic novel. But if you want the full epic package, get the novel please.
^ QFT. Enjoy this movie for what it is: a monument to a masterpiece, not a replica.

Rorschach got fucked over in the movie. :aldo:
^ What do you mean? He gets fucked over in the novel too (though, technically, he does it to himself).

As a piece of film yes, but if you like Watchmen for the meaning, etc, etc, the novel is still the best source for that.
^ It's the only source for that. Were you expecting the movie to somehow replace the novel? :wtf:

BTW, I loved the movie (if you couldn't guess). 9.5/10

Though, as someone who's read the novel over 9000 times, knew exactly what was going on, and got every single 'easter egg'/backstory reference (lmao @ Hooded Justice's German accent), my opinion was pretty slanted to begin with.

Some perspective on the movie's significance from the guy who's script made the film possible:

AN OPEN LETTER FROM A WATCHMEN SCREENWRITER

So it has been five months since I saw my first rough cut of WATCHMEN, and eight days since the premiere of the film I've been working on since late in the year 2000.

The reviews are out -- Some outstanding, others rankly dismissive, which can be frustrating for the people involved, (though I can only speak for myself,) because I firmly believe that WATCHMEN, the novel, must be read through more than once to even have the faintest grip on it. And I believe the film is the same.

I've seen it twice now, and despite having run the movie in my head thousands of times, my two viewings still don’t' allow me to view the film with the proper distance or objectivity. Is it Apocalypse Now? Is it Blade Runner? Is it Kubrick, or Starship Troopers? I don’t know yet.

All I know is that I had a pretty amazing experience the two times I've seen it. And both viewings produced remarkably different experiences. The point is, I have listened for years, to complaints from true comic book fans, that "not enough movies take the source material seriously." "Too many movies puss out," or "They change great stories, just to be commercial." Well, I f***ing dare you to say any one of those things about this movie.

This is a movie made by fans, for fans. Hundreds of people put in years of their lives to make this movie happen, and every one of them was insanely committed to retaining the integrity of this amazing, epic tale. This is a rare success story, bordering on the impossible, and every studio in town is watching to see if it will work. Hell, most of them own a piece of the movie.

So look, this is a note to the fanboys and fangirls. The true believers. Dedicated for life.

If the film made you think. Or argue with your friends. If it inspired a debate about the nature of man, or vigilante justice, or the horror of Nixon abolishing term limits. If you laughed at Bowie hanging with Adrian at Studio 54, or the Silhouette kissing that nurse.

Please go see the movie again next weekend.

You have to understand, everyone is watching to see how the film will do in its second week. If you care about movies that have a brain, or balls, (and this film's got both, literally), or true adaptations -- And if you're thinking of seeing it again anyway, please go back this weekend, Friday or Saturday night. Demonstrate the power of the fans, because it'll help let the people who pay for these movies know what we'd like to see. Because if it drops off the radar after the first weekend, they will never allow a film like this to be made again.

In the interests of full disclosure, let me also point out that I do not profit one cent from an increase in box office, although an increase in box office can add to the value of the writers' eventual residual profits from dvd and tv sales.

But I'm not saying it for money. I'm saying it for people like me. I'm saying it for people who love smart, dark entertainment, on a grand, operatic scale. I'm talking to the Snake fans, the Rorschach fans, the people of the Dark Knight.

And hey, if you hated the film, if you think we committed atrocities, or literary mistakes of a massive, cephalopodic nature. If the movie made you a little sick to your stomach, or made you feel bad about your life. If you hated it for whatever reason, that's cool too. I'm not suggesting you risk gastro-intestinal distress just for the sake of risky filmmaking.

But if you haven't seen it yet? Well, I'll just say this...

It may upset you. And it probably will upset you.

And all along, we really meant it to.

Because face it. All this time...You there, with the Smiley-face pin. Admit it.

All this time, you’ve been waiting for a director who was going to hit you in the face with this story. To just crack you in the jaw, and then bend you over the pool table with this story. With its utterly raw view of the darkest sides of human nature, expressed through its masks of action and beauty and twisted good intentions. Like a fry-basket full of hot grease in the face. Like the Comedian on the Grassy Knoll. I know, I know...

You say you don't like it. You say you've got issues. I get it.

And yet... You'll be thinking about this film, down the road. It'll nag at you. How it was rough and beautiful. How it went where it wanted to go, and you just hung on. How it was thoughtful and hateful and bleak and hilarious. And for Jackie Earle Haley.

Trust me. You'll come back, eventually. Just like Sally.

Might as well make it count for something.

Damn David Hayter is so right. The world needs more complex stories like Watchmen, Metal Gear Solid and The Dark Knight. And I also think that he's right about the fact that you won't be able to just forget this movie because there is so much behind it. This is why I need to see it again.

Being a "Watchmen" fan since I was little I gotta say I'm pleased with the movie. For what it's worth it stuck pretty close with the novel, yes there were some things they could've put in there considering it was a pretty long movie (not to surprised though). The ending especially although I did like the ending in the movie I would've liked to see the giant tentacle monster from the novel. I just wish the sex scenes weren't so long only because they could've put more in the movie as far as story goes. The actors/actresses did a great job I think.

I'll most likely buy this movie when it comes out.

Went and saw it again on saturday, and it was just as good as the first time, but another thing they left out that would have been cool was the giant glass dome with the rainforest inside, and they should have kept Bubastis blood red instead of white

I thought the Movie was shit. It didn't help that I've never even heard of Watchmen until I saw this movie, but still. I thought should of had a clearer story line. I was clueless throughout the whole movie until I saw the ending.

The fight scenes were awesome, but I wish there were more.

P.S. Dr. Manhattan is a TARD for killing Rorschach. He was the coolest.
