View Full Version : If Nomura came to you for advice regarding FFvXIII's development...

Imagine a scenario midway through the development of FFvXIII where you get to sit with Nomura one-to-one to discuss FFvXIII's future. He asks you for constructive criticism and sound advice as to how to make FFvXIII "THE Final Fantasy game everyone's been waiting for." You, being the FF connoisseur that you are :D, wish to make the most of this interview (for the benefit of the FF community). What advice would you give him? What questions would you ask him? What RPG pitfalls of the past would you wish for him to avoid >_<?
For me, I'd tell him to stay true to the dark atmosphere of FFvXIII throughout the game (unless appropriate). I'd emphasize that he build a relationship between Noctis and Stella that is strong, beautiful, complex, and convincing. I'd ask him to flesh out the characters - make each and every one of them memorable. I'd tell him to review, revise, and add to the story again and again. I'd urge him not to let the emphasis on cinematics deter SE from other important aspects of the game, such as story and gameplay. Finally, I'd encourage him to be creative and original - give gamers plenty of surprises and plot twists throughout the story .

Would Nomura really need me, or anyone else to tell him this? seems rather redundant to me....im shure hes smart and experienced enough to know this himself, but i see the point of your Topic, I just dont think its all that practical maybe?
umm..well i would tell him to kill someone, and i mean someone important! like Stella, or one of Noct's Buddies..hell maybe even Noct himself! I like death's in games, especially when its someone meaningful (Carmine AGAIN, SERIOUSLY -_-") its the most memorable part of FF7 for me and its why the ending of FFX brought tears to my eyes.

Honestly, Nomura doesn't really need our advice. He's not new to the RPG or the FF industry. There's a reason why FFvXIII has so much hype going for it--a very good reason.
I would hope that he makes his characters original. It's unavoidable that he's a little stale, considering how much SE whores him out. If he truly knows what he's doing, we won't need to worry about that. He's made mistakes, but those shortcomings really pale in light of the spectacular things he's created.

Nomura doesn't really need advice, but...
I'd tell him to stick to the wonderfully dark atmosphere of the game, and build up the characters and their relationships to be a very strong plot point. I'd ask him to give the game a 150-hour and very detailed storyline and over 2,000 sidequests, and keep the character designs looking great.
I'd suggest making the characters realistic and not over-the-top, giving them personalities that people can relate to. This tends to make them more popular.
I can't think of anything else..

Fix Stella. Really. I'm not sure if she's broken or not, but I'm slightly worried about her personality. She seems kind of flat compared to Noctis.
Other than that, spend a lot of time making the battle system fun and cool looking. I can't even figure out how they could set it up. I think if I had to pick one thing that's disappointed me the most frequently when it comes to SE games, it's the combat that results from attempts to try out new and gimmicky combat systems. Standard systems done well are better than gimmicky systems done broken. Lots of variety in combat moves, please. I want to see those teleportation physics function in combat.
I've never really been disappointed with SE's stories (bar 12), so I'm not worried about that. XD
If I could ask one question, I guess it would be: What concepts are you going to try to convey?
That's generally the best part of SE's games for me. ^__^

This is a very interesting topic,I would probably tell him to add more action and hundreds of combos to the game.

I guess I would tell him to make sure each character is original and has some sort of point or significance to the story, their not just there because their there! I want each person to be different and individual in their own way. That means no repeats like making noct like cloud or having shotgun guy be like vaan, that would be so lame, I would tell him to give them all side stories of their own, so their lives don't just revolve around the centeral story or quest they need to have a past and something that seperates them from the others characters in previous FF's

Hey, you asked.
That's not an advice. That's just you hating the game. Your so called advice has nothing to do with the thread.
Anyways, the advice I would give him is to experiment the size of the worldmap and expand on it.
The_Steve
Feb 05 2009, 07:09 PM
Nomura will in all likelihood get it right, but I want a relatively open world map, and a fighting system that is both unique fast paced but somehow reminiscent of FF (Limit breaks, ATB for special skills, etc.) and to make sure that the characters are all fully explored.
Oh, and what did sobchack mean by gay tone? when Shotgun guy put Noct in a headlock, yeah, I could do without shot gun guy, he seems a bit sexually confused.

Nothing, He does a great job on all of the games. Versus looks better than XIII in my opinion. He's got everything under control. All he should do is find a way to get rid of Yoichi Wada.

^ I agree with absolutely everything you said.
One thing I would add: spend extra time perfecting the things the player does most (e.g. the battle system).

Feb 06 2009, 12:29 AM
It's hard to say.... I'd have to spend a long time thinking it over, and of course I'd like to get a lot of inside look at what has already been done to see where they're going with it in the first place.... Where as I think I could make the game a little more enjoyable for myself this way.... In the end, I think without my input they could make the game a little more enjoyable for everyone else instead.... It's better to appeal to everyone a moderate amount than a to appeal to a few a lot....
Zezlar
Feb 06 2009, 12:47 AM
Yoichi Wada is a dumbass when it comes to marketing the games. I know he wants the games to appeal more to the west, but ever since he did that all of their games have sold less and it always seems that their games are rushed now.
Infinite Undiscovery - Rushed
The Last Remnant - Rushed
Star Ocean 4 - BETTER NOT BE RUSHED OR I'LL KILL HIM!!!!!!!!!

You might want to try giving Hajime Tabata a call, given that he's the one actually directing it.
Besides, I'm surprised they haven't already cancelled it. Invalid threat is terribly invalid. :wtf:

i agree with you, personally I would rather have the game come out like way late and be totally awsome than have SE do so half ass rush joub at finishing it only to put a totally shitty game in the end! even if it comes out late as long as its epic they can take all the time they want (hopefully we'll all get to play it before we die, or before global warming kills us...which ever.)

Feb 06 2009, 04:34 AM
I wouldn't give any commands, but I'd have some requests.
I'd say... give the game a lot of character. Keep the dark mood and tone, but don't make it so the characters have a case of perma-sorrow. Make them laugh, talk to each other, help each other out, give each other advice, etc... In other words, make them friends, enemies, lovers... and most importantly, human. Also, avoid corny dialogue at all costs. I know it's inevitable in an RPG, but if it has to be corny, make it sweet and corny.
Another thing I'd inquire would be a challenge in battle and puzzles. Not DMC3 worthy in battle, but more like... KH1 with a better camera, and puzzles... well he's creative. And speaking of battle, I want all the characters to be a blast to play as. I want LOTS OF COMBOS with some (Not a lot) reason to change it up, and variety between everyone. So I'd get a different and fun experience with everyone. I'd give a tip that the shotgun guy should be DoC done right.
And last but most certainly not least... MORE WOMEN! We have 4 guys and 1 girl. The fangirls have their service... now hook me up.
Then I'd tell him to go, and make me a good ass game.

Pretty much everything said there. Except, I would ask him to make the game quite bloody and to put more girls in it. The team of 4 guys seems a little gay right now... :wtf:

I would have one thing to say to him: "Don't ask me, Get back to work!". Jk, though I would say keep the dark atmosphere and make the gameplay incredible and avoid gameplay which involves continuous button mashing.

"Don't spoil ANYTHING about the game before release."
Nothing is worse than getting piece-fed information about a game, putting elements together, and then someone turns out to be right. That's why I really liked the RE trailer, it got me hooked but didn't really tell me anything about the game.
Speculating is fun, as long as you always turn out wrong (or until someone takes it as fact).

Feb 06 2009, 11:02 PM
I agree with you I think they should put another girl in the game, but not some lame little prissy Oh please rescue me girl in it. a real female power like tifa was in FF7. I want there to be a strong female figure in the game, to represent! not just a whole team of guys that does seem kinda gay (no offence). I just hate how in alot of previous FF games the story is mostly centere daround guys, it would be a nice change to have some girl power in the game.
Larsal
Feb 07 2009, 07:34 AM
yep, more women. a strong and confident girl should make it. but are we not concern about the fact that Nomura likes androgyn, shota men? hmm...
anyways, i'd say: "Go and make me a good game. Give me a game which is worth to call it FinalFantasy and which is worth the fucking long wait."

Tell him to give the battle system a No More Heroes Limit Break mode, not accessed with slots.
Allow Noctis and friends to have special, unique individual moves known by themselves.
Allow Magic System to not be so generic.
Have him show the effects of how political actions can also affect societies and everyday people as well, from a few, but powerful, perspectives.
Allow customizable combos for gameplay.

I say make the game action packed. Evolve a very good sub story between Noctus and Stella, they both connect as characters. I want to have battles like God of war or Kingdom Hearts 2 where you can interact with some of the CG scenes. Add multiple endings to game. Add bonus play after completing game: You get to play Noctus again with more power to start with and new clothes. And have option to play story as Stella's point of view second time around like RE games. Have cool mini games such as battle arena and chocobo racing with online play with characters.

Feb 21 2009, 02:04 PM
i would tell him too make the world not so limited in areas where you can go, more open-world and not so linear..
then maybe i'd tell him to not put much focus on boring politics just to make the game 50 hours longer..give Noct a less boring outfit and maybe let the player choose if he/she wanna play as Noct or Stella... and make the combatsystem a litle complex and not just something you can master in ten minutes. and i want a long story, alot of twists etc. well the list is long and i'm sure Nomura will get most of the things right but i'm also sure that once FFXIII comes out i'm not gonna be thinking of this game for a while

I would tell him, HURRY UP!!1! oh and yes, no gay downloable content that be like "change noctis clothes from black to dark blue" that cost like 3.99 $ and we all know they could do that.... just look at EA, and Dead Space..... 3$ for a more "realistic" fire in the game...

eh.. i really dont see a gay tone in ff13..its just a friendship thing..like Zack and Cloud friendship..is it now wrong to be close friends?!? but i would tell nomura..to not change the ending he has planned..but i wanna see something very interesting happen to noctis and Stella not like every ff game where the female has to be rescued due to an accident..more like a hostage situtation or something..i dont know..i want to see a really big noctis reaction Maybe also a father and son fight..if that old dude is noctis's father..something epic
