Translation: New Trailer -remade-

Hey guys, here is a list of the translations that were aired on the US Square Enix site. After I looked over them I noticed some of the translations that I didn’t necessarily agree with. Now, with that said, I am in no way trying to discredit the translators from Square Enix and this is merely an attempt to get at some of the information that the Japanese users may have had access to while we did not. At the same time there isn’t really anything substantial here but again I am solely trying to complete a more exact translation for the many fans out there. (Mainly you guys.) Also, I seem to be missing a few parts and due to the fact that the announcements etc. are hard to hear some of the details (very few) are a bit iffy. If you have any questions, suggestions, recommendations, feel free to let me know. Cheers…

Checking on request. Just "more literal than SE's" means it's a more literal translation, and I agree with it as a more literal translation. However, I think people should rely more heavily on SE's translations than ours. We've set our own standards for how to translate things, but they're the ones who set the real standards for it.


For the purpose of garnering info, though, go freaking wild. I hear Harry Potter fans pulled names that were supposed to be secret until later novels out of older novels and manuscripts by comparing different language translations.


If they want to call the "missions/mandates" "Focus"es, and the Holy Government "Sanctum," then I think we should just get used to it. It's fantasy vocabulary.


To get a better idea of how much a translation changes when fitting it to another language and culture, watch Advent Children in English with English subtitles on. You'll be surprised, especially if you can understand the Japanese.

The more common use of the word indicates that the 13th day after they awoke was the day the world began to end. 13日= a standard way to indicate the 13th day. 13日間 = the span of 13 days. I don't understand why you think it's a timeframe. Am I missing something...?

Nobody knows what 'Nola/Nora' is doing in that sentence, and if you want to get technical, she uses the word 'enemy/rival,' not match. Otherwise more literal than SE's.

Nora has been in transcripts since the very beginning, and even the Japanese don't seem know what it's referring to, so no, we're not making it up. I don't know why SE cut it from the English, unless it's simply a speech quirk. Lots of characters seem to have them in 13.

Nobody's mistaking PSICOM for Cocoon Government, thanks. The debate is between whether he's saying PSICOM or Saikou. Cocoon Government is mentioned earlier. I can't honestly tell if he's saying PSICOM or Saikou. I originally thought it was PSICOM, myself, but the transcript Monkey is working off says "Saikou" which means "the most," "the best," etc. And now that I'm listening to it while reading the transcript, it sounds like Saikou. And he does say "The enemy is Cocoon's government," clearly audible even to me. I don't know how you think you know he doesn't.

I'm wondering why everybody waited until we already had subtitles before offering to help. Can't you guys do more magazines or something? :lol: I know you do them sometimes but still.. I don't think we've gotten any more information out of the Japanese, except that Asian girl says "nola" and nobody knows what it means.

I don't understand why we need unoffical translation when we have SE's. For example, why did you change "Focus" to "Mandate"? If SE says it's Focus it's called Focus, period.
If you had fun good for you, but I don't think it can help. I think SE knows more than us. If they translated like that it's beacuse it know what it's talking about.

hey quick update mainly towards what BlankChocobo had so say, but later today I will be more than glad to address the issues relating the questions you brought up and as far as the translating for others goes, to be quite honest I just havn't been around to do them and I usually find someone who is already working on them while I am doing mine. Thanks for the effort monkeyJ, that was cool of you to help out. :D But honestly I prefer a localized script that uses more appropriate English syntax, over one that just literally translates the Japanese. An example where the tone of a line was lost by being more literal, would be with the announcer speaking to the residents of cocoon being shipped out. In your translation the sarcastic tone is lost.

thanks for all the comments guys, I'm gonna try and run back on what I had translated and turn it into something much more reader-friendly. It's good to know some of you liked it, while others didn't. Regarding some of the issues just quickly, I thought that Nora might be a bit important due to the fact that it was obviously not translated and was a "name" like sound. Regarding this problem, when you listen to the actual dialogue, I had the same interpretation the first time due to the same reason. On the other hand however, after careful examination, the がthat follows after the word is the deciding point in understanding the translation. She is implying that the “thirteen days were…” and continues on.

If you were to examine the differences in the Kanji, as well as the uses of the word, there are two different words for “mita”. 見た and 視たboth have similar meanings but both are used in specifically seeing a dream of sorts. I think that the translation of a dream is correct.

They are strictly pointing out that they will no longer stay silent and yet they do it with a questioning grammar. Although the grammar would suggest a question, the context and the language suggest otherwise. After living in Japan for so long I used this myself along with many of my friends and it was definitely used in the statement form.

I just checked, and the printed subtitles do use 視た. The kanji in the transcript you posted isn't right, which is what I was going off. Sorry. :lol: I agree with you on the point that it hints at a 'vision' rather than phyically sighting something. Where did this transcript come from, anyway?

I was driving for more literal word picking. I understand the line. I was going to put "Can you really expect us to stay silent?" but I thought the point was to put down the Japanese words as literally as they came out.

If you want to get rid of "fear," why don't you try Kyofu 聖府, Holy Government(that's how I was translating it for lack of an SE sanctioned word), the word that's been used all along to describe Cocoon's governent?

That would make the line exactly as SE said. EDIT: No it wouldn't, but it would make the part in question exactly as SE said.

And I never accused anyone of making anything up, I just watched the trailer with these subtitles and the sentance was written as if it was directing a question/statement at someone named Nora and I was asking where it came from. :wtf:

I don't know who that person is, but that character is clearly Re (レ). Ru looks like this: ル.

The fact that I can type the characters on an American keyboard without realizing I'm wrong is proof enough, since you type in phonetic English to get the Japanese. >_> The character I can't read is the second one: Bu or Pu (ブ or プ). In the CMT, I thought it was Bu. I still think it's Bu, but I'm not sure enough to put money down on it...
EDIT: I looked at my previous post and apparently I can't make up my mind. I think it's a Bu now.

I'm pretty damn sure it's either レプロ (Repuro) or レブロ(Reburo), not ルベロ(Rubero) or　ルペロ (Rupero).

oh and i quick update for you chocobo, I just listened in on the video again and i think our guesses were right regarding PSICOM. the 最高 that we thought we heard is actually a katakana version of PSICOM: サイコムand/or something to that degree. No we're not. You're talking about two different sentences.

The PSICOM sentence in English subtitles is the first, but you claim you're hearing PSICOM in the second (Where we're hearing/saying/translaing Saikou), unless you somehow are hearing "Kokuun Seifu" as "PSICOM". There is no Sai/PSI anything in the first half of the dialogue portion.

MonkeyJ and I can hear separate things. We're both guessing, and he can't 'confirm' the script any more than I can. I already responded to him.

No, it would be like "The enemy is the Amercan government! Moreover, it's the American government's National Guard！" Redundancy. In any case, you don't have confirmation, but it's pointless to fight over it, because we can say we hear whatever we want to.

I've listened to that one piece like thirty times now, and I still can't hear a mu either. I'm just going to take it at SE's like I have from the start. They're either more literal or less literal than we thought, but they're still the official version.



------ But moving on from a point which isn't going to yield information, why do we have two terms for Cocoon's government?

We have Kyofu (Holy Government) 聖府 and Cocoon Seifu (Cocoon Government) コクーン政府.

Are they two words for the same thing, or is there a division? Snow seems to treat them the same, I think? I really need to dig up some magazines to get the context for Kyofu, but I feel like that was the main term used for the government up until now.

I sometimes wonder if you guys really understand japanese or not or somehow picked up words and phrases from anime and whatnot.

I've watched this video well over a hundred times already listening closely to the dialogue. I don't know where you got kyofu as the sacred or holy government, there is no such word referring anything to some superior or high level government.

As I've already stated in the other thread, it's most definitely "Kyoufu" which is "Fear". I also don't hear the "mu" that some of you are throwing about, it sounds like "Saiko" or "Saikon". However, "Saikon"'s common usage is to "Remarry (marriage)" so that's not it. It may be "Saikon" as to "Rebuild" however this is usually applied to buildings (kanji is "sai" and "kon" or read otherwise as "tateru"/to build). It's not "Saikou" which the common use means the best, because it's not really a "Fear's Best" (you don't put words together like that). It could be "Saikou" as in to "Rebuild" which, makes sense (the rebuilding of Fear, kanji form would be "sai" as used in saisei, and "kou" as used for Gakkou).

I've tried viewing the trailer in various formats, but if I try to make it bigger it gets harder to read, so it's still unclear if it's Rebloe or Reploe for one of the sub character's name.

ya all it's saying is that the names that were able to be confirmed are Gadou and Repuro. It must be someone talking about the names in the trailer around Snow who is fighting with the two.

I've watched this video well over a hundred times already listening closely to the dialogue. I don't know where you got kyofu as the sacred or holy government, there is no such word referring anything to some superior or high level government.

No, it's not a standard word and there is no standard reading for it that I can find. It's called creative license, and it happens in science fiction and fantasy all the time. I don't think I need to tell you the meaning of the two character there. You can put it together yourself. But I'm going to do it anyway: Holy + Government = Guess what?

In any case, kyo is a nanori reading. I just bothered to do the reading for it, and found an article in Shonen Jump where they put furigana down for it as Seifu, so kyo is in all likelihood not. In addition, there's a calligraphy shop that puts a reading down for 聖府 as SeiFu. That would be why I kept asking for thoughts, smartass. Yeah, I'm the weaker one here, but I'm not a total retard, thanks.

Even more math: Holy + Government + Seifu reading = No Holy Government word, Orly?

Also, some of the magazines are speculating that COM is short for some form of 'computer.' ン　as far as I know, can still be read as an M, so you still have PSICOM in there if you have さいこん. I don't hear the ン, personally.

As you most probably already know, they call PCs "Pa-sonaru Konpyu-ta-" or in short "Pasokon(n)". If you follow what I am getting at, you'll see that is where I have derived the "Saikon(n)" from. But of course, you would assume that I wouldn't know what you guys we talking about and assume yet again that you'd need to explain something to an annoying guy who doesn't know what he's talking about. Cut the attitude out, nobody likes or hires a gaijin who thinks they're the shit, the entertainment industry has loads of people who would be glad to take a job, they don't need smartasses like you. I wouldn't hire you, and I certainly am going to keep an open eye and ear out for you so some game companies wouldn't hire you.

There's also Sierra, the other of the two who is half japanese like I am who shows the same if not better magnitude of translation and interpretation skills than Dorian and me. But she's patient, and nice, and definitely can handle her own in the professional side of business in the entertainment industry. A HUGE difference to someone I know from this site. Wow. You must feel very smart now, huh?

Lastly for this argument, the last thing you said on the last quote. This thread is a discussion for translation of the recently released trailer. It counts as something to consider, and to talk about, I can mention whatever I like so long as it pertains to the translation of this said trailer. DUH. On another note, I've been quite annoyed with you for sometime now. I've come to this site to have some fun and didn't really want to fight with people but some people are absurdly wretched and self-righteous thinking they know stuff and others don't. Arrogant, cocky, immature people who are still wet behind their ears with little or no experience. This is regarding the other thread where you were arguing with whomever about magazines paying SE for new media content. The good news is, you are right, magazines don't for the most part pay game companies money to place new info. The mistake you've made is that SE is a business like you've even stated yourself, they do need to make ends meet, and as you've already seen they do things to bring in money to their company to at least fund their multi-million dollar projects. If you know anything about business, any small thing like getting ads placed on magazines DO cost money. Getting products and services overseas add up to A LOT. I was debating at the time a lot whether to rip you not one, nor two, but ten new ones but eventually I let it slide as I didn't want to come across as a complete asshole and I didn't want to be much more of a bad guy at that point. But, let me list some other things you did wrong:

- I started going to game conventions like E3, TGS, etc around the age of 13 and became a staff writer and journalist for games for a few years afterwards around over 10 years ag. Even if I was new to everything at the time, I DID NOT make a foolish decision to bring a camera to any booth or event that specifically asked for no kind of photography or filming like you did. People remember stuff like that, you will be surprised how small of a world the industry can be.

- What really pissed me off was how you mentioned SE wasn't special or any different from other game companies. That is true, nothing wrong with that. However you go harping on about how Japan has this "GET" fever, which is TOTALLY IRRELEVANT to what the argument you had with that other person at the time. You DO know, that the SE headquarter is in Japan. So what you're saying is, indirectly SE is special, since Japan has this special "GET" fever. You, of course, are looking it as a complete outsider to even mention and explain something like that. No person who is humbly learning japanese would ever go about trying to learn about Japan and their culture that way, but try to experience it as a native person born there would. That is the beauty of learning a language. So, as someone who does have japanese blood and has been been brought up with a japanese cultural background, I'd like to say this:

Ok AT23, not to sound annoyed or anything but I think you could have approached this problem a lot better than you did but I’ll do my best to comment on what you said nonetheless. First of all I don’t appreciate your accusations on my falling back onto BlankChocobo’s ideas based on the fact that we were trying to open up something that we weren’t very sure of. First of all you say that there is no word as kyofu in kanji. Well you have effectively proven that you are not so aware of the Japanese language yourself. Here’s an example of kyofu. 巨富 Anyways we never said that it was Kyofu. We were simply pointing out that it was Kyoufu (恐怖) But the misunderstanding can probably slide.

And yes I think we understand that idea of shortening certain words to make them more…well short. But your examples of shortening have nothing to do with this circumstance. If they were shortening the PSICOM that was used in the trailer, they would have obviously said サイコム　or something to that extent. But we were assuming that it wasn’t that because we heard no “mu” in the word that he says. So, we rested back on the fact that it was probably さいこう or the best. Also, not to sound offensive, but you might want to try a bit of your own medicine, クソ外人ハーフ.

And I don’t quite understand why you are getting so worked up about the ム. We only played with the idea that there was a possibility for サイコム to be the word for the shortened PSICOM. I think you may have mixed the two ideas and mistook us for trying to add that to the end with the idea that we were convinced that it was the case. We are obviously trying to figure out whether or not it is 最高, サイコム, or even something totally different. So please, try not to get too excited with something that we are merely discussing. And on top of that, lay off your own personal garbage translating stories, we’re not trying to say that we’re better than anyone else nor have we ever said that.

Now to be honest, I can’t really read the rest of your post because it’s just one rant fest. I'd like to know what was unclear in the first translation and what kind of conclusion you came to, since reading your translation didn't make anything any clearer to me.

I'm not saying you shouldn't try translating anything yourself jut in case there is something that previous tranlators failed to highlight. though if there's nothing new in your translation, then in my opinion you should just leave it alone just to steer clear of these rather unnecessary discussions...

btw, despite being a bit negative just now, i'd like to thank those who translates japanese magazines and stuff that isn't officially trranslated. you deserve like a medal or something:D
