Hey all,
Hopefully this belongs in the right area, but I guess I should know after being here for some time. Anyway, a quick questions and hopefully a discussion topic for all: how do you think violence in video games has shaped the modern teenager? We've seen in the past, like the school shootings in the US, in which violence in video games is blamed for some of the modern murders. While this topic seems to be on-going, some legislators are even looking to further the warnings against video games that include heavy violence. (http://www.edge-online.com/news/bill-would-require-health-warning-games) Have you guys read anything interesting or controversial regarding this topic?

That again....
German politicians like to call that kind of videogames "killer-games" and it's such a big deal over here, because there have been some school shootings here too. (Erfurrt 26.4.2002; Emsdetten 20.11.2006)
Now every politician, that never played a single videogame claims to be an expert and talks about how "killer-games" (this word is ridiculous in itself) effect teenagers etc.
The problem about this discussion is, that it's not based on neutral facts.
The ones claiming that videogames should be forbidden, probably have never played any of the games, they are talking about, or even REALLY looked at the games.
And the ones claiming that games have no effect on children at all are just as ignorant as the ones I mentioned above.
I personally think that of course videogames have an effect on teeneagers or children, BUT nobody, and I mean nobody flips out and shoots people because of a videogame.
It's not like the kids freak out because they can't reach a certain level or whatever.
These children or teenagers have other problems like psychological issues or issues in there family, whatever the case: they don't flip BECAUSE of the games they are playing.
And of course there are the typical questions: Where were the parents? Didn't they see anything coming? Didn't they check what there kids are playing? Didn't they freakin' talk to their children?
IMO it's very easy to blame videogames for things like school-shootings, it's easier than to ask these questions and find true reasons why a kid freaks out, but I'm gonna stop now.

I agree that vedio games them selves dont cause violence but its also due to other factors such as their psychological mentaility and maybe the environment they live and i could also be due to stress. but i could be wrong.

Yeah, I think Odin Clones said it nice and simple, have to agree with him.

I agree with Odin clones, like the boy that didn't get to play his game then killed his parents, (dunno if i have all the facts right)

Well....videogames affect a minory of tennagers, it only affects the ones who have psycological disturbes. To prevent this parents should control what games their kids play, what films they watch and what sites they go on internet, teach them to tell what is real and what is not real untill they complete 12 years old.

Video games have an effect on teenagers. A lot of things have an effect on them. But this health warning thing is going a little far. Video games aren't like cigarettes. Cigarettes release toxic poisons into your body, but suggesting that video games do something similar is illogical. I think a lot of people think video games are more dangerous than , say, movies because of the interactive feature it has. Like Odin said, it's usually something wrong with the person that causes the problem. If video games were as dangerous as some politicians say, then those 5 million people around the world that bought GOW are going to kill us all.

No matter what people blame (movies, TV, video games), the parent(s) are always a major factor in how a teenager turns out to be.
If I had a son or daughter and they would kill because of a video game, I would blame myself. I let my child down for not seeing their violent behavior or their real problems.

I have to agree that the parents play a part in it as well. You would think they'd be the first to notice anything about their own kids and monitor what crap they play.

You sir are a smart person. It is not the movies, tvs, or video games fault if a child/teenager kills or hurts someone else. Yes they may be influenced by them in ways, but that is the parents problem because they allowed their child to watch or play those aggresive games or movies.
It's not like the movie or game told someone to go out and kill someone else. (Except for maybe in the movie or game)
If parents alow their children to be exposed to that kind of material then the parents should be to blame, not the movies, tv, or video games.

it was proven by some scientists recently that violence in video games has no effect on a child or teens aggressiveness nor does it make them more violent. it even showd that video games enhanced the alternative thinking skills of youth. on another not its also proven that surgeons who play/have played video games frequently (like hardcore) have improved hand-eye coordination in comparison to traditional surgeons.
so whatever politicians say it simply is just bogus ideals that appeal to parents who feel that video games interfere with family interraction

^I heard about that too. In fact, I've heard reports that confirm both sides. But each does it differently. It's difficult to decide who's right and who's wrong.

Might be an old post but I am a bit new. So as far as the video game violence as a whole, I think it's a bunch of crap. I mean honestly when play games such as GTA4 and Countercrack (strike for the rest of you nerds) I believe they get a taste of the violence but they never have the emotional detachment that say... killing a real person would have.
Take War vets.. do you see the difference between violence in kids and them? Notice how overly closed up they are about it?
But along those lines.. I do think some video games can be stressful. Have you ever tried to pull a kid away from World of Warcrack during a raid or PvP environment? Have you ever tried to shut off the power to a kid's CPU while they were in clan match for any FPS?
Games like World of Warcraft and Counterstrike and anything else that involves PvP environments can be pretty hostile at times. It can create aggression but it comes from the person within. Thanks to these games we have kids learning shit fuck and cunt around the age of 7-9. Trust me.. there is a reason the majority of people that play games like Gears of War 2 are male populated. When a girl plays she feels a bit overwhelmed unless they grew up around it. Also.. notice how many pervs are on the games. Especially xbox360.. how many random invites do girls get just because they are one.. This has nothing to do with the games.. just that the parents aren't monitoring who they play with.
I blame it on the parents because you can turn it around, and monitor them in who they play with. Personally.. I think a good headshot relieves a bit of stress.. but to be honest... violent is hardly me.
