View Full Version : Square-Enix: Final Fantasy XIII Release Date "Still to be Determined"

MCV have contacted Square-Enix Europe concerning the release date announced by president Yoichi Wada during the Forbes interview we posted about yesterday. According to Square Europe, a release date for Final Fantasy XIII is "still to be determined" and an official one "will be revealed in due course".
So what do these mixed signals mean? Is Wada once again jumping the gun and saying something stupid in public or is Square-Enix Europe being left completly out of the loop? It's possible Wada announced a release date just to keep the shareholders happy. In any case, it looks like we'll still have to wait for Square-Enix's official confirmation on a release date.

This is really getting iritating. All the time they say different things. :D
Wada says that the game will come in spring 2010, and a while ago they stated that the game will see a worldwide release this year. We must only wait and see whats going to happen.

What it means is April 1 2010- March 31 2011. That's fiscal year 2010 right there. No release date determined. Wada never mentioned a specific date.

I don't care what other sites say.
I don't care what other magazines say.
I don't care what Wada says.
I don't care what developers say.
All I care about is that a date attached by the end of an official video!!

We can hope that dosent mean April 2010 - March 2011.
We should hope on a release for this year, so they can start a new ff project
That we can get 2 FF(FFXIII & FFXIV) games for this generation.

It's not that easy my friend, did you forget about FF versus and FF Agito?
And I don't think we're gonna see a US version this year it's kinda impossible!
if it possible then it should be by the very end of this year like (31/12/2009).

I didnt forget about them. But they are FFXIII, just spin off's from the main title.
So i count them in the FFXIII.
And Agito and Versus have really nothing to do with FFXIII.
They all have their own teams, that are developing the games.
So when FFXIII is ready, they can start a new project, if they dont need anyone from the other teams.
So when FFXIII are ready/released, they can start a new project.
And i hope that we should get at least 2 FF main titles for this generation.

I respect your opinion my friend, But Versus and Agito aren't considered as spin offs they are actually as big as FFXIII but with different teams and different concepts.
when FFXIII is ready, they can't just start a new project like that, they for sure will need FFXIII developers to help them with Versus as they did with FFXIII.
I know that Versus development is on going, but not as quick as FFXIII!! I thing Versus has alot alot of things still unfinished yet!!
Square Enix has to finish FNC project and then think of something else!!
This generation of games isn't as easy as previous generations.

Either way it's quite a while, isn't it?
Buuut, lets be positive. As far as I know porting to 360 doesn't take long, so it'll probably be the translation taking up all that time, right? So presumably a lot of text and cutscenes, which I'm sure are most people's favourite thing.
I wonder what the chances are of Agito coming out first? I know they're not concetrating on it as much as XIII at the moment, but PSP games are much easier and quicker to make than PS3 games, so I guess it's possible.

The ones jumping the gun are we retards.
We don't even have a quote on the overseas release thing. Guardian just put it into their own words, meaning he could have said "planning on" or "want to" 2010 or later, which isn't a release date anyway. It's a one-sided timeframe with the other end left wide open.
At least SE is telling everyone the Japanese release is scheduled for this year. Guardian and the Shueisha articles both agree on that.

Yeah, something - even April 2010 - is better than nothing. Oh well, as the release of the demo and the Japanese version approaches, I guess we'll be hearing more definite news.

I think QA for the 360 version is going to take up most of the time between the releases, which could be considered part of porting. Since the engine is multiplatform, the process of porting shouldn't be that much of an issue. What it's going to come down to is how much effort goes into ensuring there are no bugs or flaws in the 360 version. Essentially, how port-friendly the engine is.
One of the reasons they've avoided anything concrete for the west is likely because they aren't entirely sure how long it will take. They may finish in time for a release next spring, or maybe it will take all the way until Q4.
I wouldn't be surprised if Agito was released first just based on it's platform, but I'm guessing FFXIII just based on the media coverage and upcoming demo. Then once that game is released, they focus on revealing information about the next game.
Versus will probably be last, late 2010 at the earliest (for Japan)? Agito maybe in mid 2010 if FFXIII is released in late 2009? Give 6+ months between releases so they don't cannibalize each other too much.

It seems there's some overlap in FFXIII and Agito staff (not sure how much), so I'd bet on seeing an order of: 13, Agito, Versus, too. I can't see SE putting more effort into Agito than 13, considering the media.

I was just wondering that, Is the NA release date now confirmed to April 2010 or later, because they said that "European release date for Final Fantasy FXIII has yet to be decided". So they didnt mention The NA release at all.
If this is the case, then the European people can hope for a release sometime in the late 2010 or beginning of 2011.

i hope they release english and japaneese version both at the same time.
I'm taking this as a good thing. Wada said the game would release April 2010 or later, and SE have said that they don't really know. "Don't know" is better than "April 2010+" in my opinion.
I know everyone loves to be all doom-and-glood about SE and release dates, but they actually have a very very good record (apart from FF12). They've said they're significantly cutting down the localisation times and that the game will release this year in Japan. April 2010 in NA is LATER than we should have been expecting.
But, I don't think this is too note worthy. SE normally say "no comment", this time they said "dunno", it's not exactly coming out and proclaiming that Wada is wrong (unfortunately).

There's no way Europe is waiting 12 months or more this time, don't jump to conclusions.

Certain, you mean?
I had hoped it would be this year, but looking back at Square's past titles, it's not much of a surprise for the localization time.
Thankfully, 2009 is filled with a ton of shit coming out so I can deal with it.

I think the reason we got a "dunno" from Europe is that a different question was asked. Wada seems to have possibly said "not before 2010," whereas Europe said "we don't know a release date."
-Also, April 2010 isn't necessarily a long time after release in Japan. We have NO set Japanese date, either. They could release it on the LAST day of 2009 and not have contradicted themselves, which would make April 2010 only 4 months time between JP release. That would be pretty early for a huge game, I think.

I think its pretty strange, that Wada stated that the release date is for NA(possibly also EU) April 2010 or later.
but after one day/two day (was it) The European department of SE stated that the "Release date still to determined".
But if Wada would have been right, then there would not be a reason for the SE to state that they must still choose/decide a release date.
This could mean that Wada was talking bs, and dont really know when the game is coming overseas.
And thats why the SE stated, that they have still to choose a decent release date for the NA and EU.
So we have still some hope for a 2009 release date for NA/EU.

Lol, that is a possibility, but I don't think the game releasing 31st of December is exactly odds on. =P
Four months is still the absolute minimum, and that's too long (in my opinion) for a "significantly cut down localisation time" anyway. They said they wanted a worldwide release, 4+ months isn't even close. >.<

Bit lame to be honest, but hopefully it'll do the game good with a bit of extra development time. :)
Strange that it would hold Versus and Agito up, but then I guess they just want to get XIII out first, which I could understand, seeing as that could be classed as the main game out of the Fabula Nova Crystallis project.
Personally, I'm looking forward to Versus the most, but then some people class that as just a spin-off from standard XIII, which is fair enough.
I guess it just comes down to personal preferences at the end of the day, and what Square would like to do with their games, and how they're going to go about their marketing strategy.
Can't wait for both PS3 ones though, just not too bothered about Agito.
